9:1 non sum liber non sum apostolus 1. Am I not an apostle? am I not free?
nonne Iesum Dominum nostrum vidi non have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord?
opus meum vos estis in Domino are not ye my work in the Lord?
9:2 si aliis non sum apostolus sed 2. If I be not an apostle unto others,
tamen vobis sum nam signaculum yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal
apostolatus mei vos estis in Domino of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
9:3 mea defensio apud eos qui me 3. Mine answer to them that do examine
interrogant haec est me is this,
9:4 numquid non habemus potestatem 4. Have we not power to eat and to
manducandi et bibendi drink?
9:5 numquid non habemus potestatem 5. Have we not power to lead about a
sororem mulierem circumducendi sicut et sister, a wife, as well as other
ceteri apostoli et fratres Domini et apostles, and as the brethren of the
Cephas Lord, and Cephas?
9:6 aut solus ego et Barnabas non 6. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we
habemus potestatem hoc operandi power to forbear working?
9:7 quis militat suis stipendiis 7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his
umquam quis plantat vineam et fructum own charges? who planteth a vineyard,
eius non edit quis pascit gregem et de and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or
lacte gregis non manducat who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of
the milk of the flock?
9:8 numquid secundum hominem haec dico 8. Say I these things as a man? or
an et lex haec non dicit saith not the law the same also?
9:9 scriptum est enim in lege Mosi non 9. For it is written in the law of
alligabis os bovi trituranti numquid de Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth
bubus cura est Deo of the ox that treadeth out the corn.
Doth God take care for oxen?
9:10 an propter nos utique dicit nam 10. Or saith he it altogether for our
propter nos scripta sunt quoniam debet sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is
in spe qui arat arare et qui triturat written: that he that ploweth should
in spe fructus percipiendi plow in hope; and that he that
thresheth in hope should be partaker of
his hope.
9:11 si nos vobis spiritalia 11. If we have sown unto you spiritual
seminavimus magnum est si nos carnalia things, is it a great thing if we shall
vestra metamus reap your carnal things?
9:12 si alii potestatis vestrae 12. If others be partakers of this
participes sunt non potius nos sed non power over you, are not we rather?
usi sumus hac potestate sed omnia Nevertheless we have not used this
sustinemus ne quod offendiculum demus power; but suffer all things, lest we
evangelio Christi should hinder the gospel of Christ.
9:13 nescitis quoniam qui in sacrario 13. Do ye not know that they which
operantur quae de sacrario sunt edunt minister about holy things live of the
qui altario deserviunt cum altario things of the temple? and they which
participantur wait at the altar are partakers with
the altar?
9:14 ita et Dominus ordinavit his qui 14. Even so hath the Lord ordained
evangelium adnuntiant de evangelio that they which preach the gospel
vivere should live of the gospel.
9:15 ego autem nullo horum usus sum 15. But I have used none of these
non scripsi autem haec ut ita fiant in things: neither have I written these
me bonum est enim mihi magis mori quam things, that it should be so done unto
ut gloriam meam quis evacuet me: for it were better for me to die,
than that any man should make my
glorying void.
9:16 nam si evangelizavero non est 16. For though I preach the gospel, I
mihi gloria necessitas enim mihi have nothing to glory of: for necessity
incumbit vae enim mihi est si non is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me,
evangelizavero if I preach not the gospel!
9:17 si enim volens hoc ago mercedem 17. For if I do this thing willingly,
habeo si autem invitus dispensatio mihi I have a reward: but if against my
credita est will, a dispensation of the gospel is
committed unto me.
9:18 quae est ergo merces mea ut 18. What is my reward then? Verily
evangelium praedicans sine sumptu ponam that, when I preach the gospel, I may
evangelium ut non abutar potestate mea make the gospel of Christ without
in evangelio charge, that I abuse not my power in
the gospel.
9:19 nam cum liber essem ex omnibus 19. For though I be free from all men,
omnium me servum feci ut plures lucri yet have I made myself servant unto
facerem all, that I might gain the more.
9:20 et factus sum Iudaeis tamquam 20. And unto the Jews I became as a
Iudaeus ut Iudaeos lucrarer Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to
them that are under the law, as under
the law, that I might gain them that
are under the law;
9:21 his qui sub lege sunt quasi sub 21. To them that are without law, as
lege essem cum ipse non essem sub lege without law, (being not without law to
ut eos qui sub lege erant lucri facerem God, but under the law to Christ,) that
his qui sine lege erant tamquam sine I might gain them that are without law.
lege essem cum sine lege Dei non essem
sed in lege essem Christi ut lucri
facerem eos qui sine lege erant
9:22 factus sum infirmis infirmus ut 22. To the weak became I as weak, that
infirmos lucri facerem omnibus omnia I might gain the weak: I am made all
factus sum ut omnes facerem salvos things to all men, that I might by all
means save some.
9:23 omnia autem facio propter 23. And this I do for the gospel's
evangelium ut particeps eius efficiar sake, that I might be partaker thereof
with you.
9:24 nescitis quod hii qui in stadio 24. Know ye not that they which run in
currunt omnes quidem currunt sed unus a race run all, but one receiveth the
accipit bravium sic currite ut prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
conprehendatis
9:25 omnis autem qui in agone 25. And every man that striveth for
contendit ab omnibus se abstinet et the mastery is temperate in all things.
illi quidem ut corruptibilem coronam Now they do it to obtain a corruptible
accipiant nos autem incorruptam crown; but we an incorruptible.
9:26 ego igitur sic curro non quasi in 26. I therefore so run, not as
incertum sic pugno non quasi aerem uncertainly; so fight I, not as one
verberans that beateth the air:
9:27 sed castigo corpus meum et in 27. But I keep under my body, and
servitutem redigo ne forte cum aliis bring it into subjection: lest that by
praedicaverim ipse reprobus efficiar any means, when I have preached to
others, I myself should be a castaway.
