4:1  et iterum coepit docere ad mare et      1.  And he began again to teach by the
congregata est ad eum turba multa ita        sea side: and there was gathered unto
ut in navem ascendens sederet in mari        him a great multitude, so that he
et omnis turba circa mare super terram       entered into a ship, and sat in the
erat                                         sea; and the whole multitude was by the
                                             sea on the land.
                                             
4:2  et docebat eos in parabolis multa       2.  And he taught them many things by
et dicebat illis in doctrina sua             parables, and said unto them in his
                                             doctrine,
                                             
4:3  audite ecce exiit seminans ad           3.  Hearken; Behold, there went out a
seminandum                                   sower to sow:
                                             
4:4  et dum seminat aliud cecidit circa      4.  And it came to pass, as he sowed,
viam et venerunt volucres et comederunt      some fell by the way side, and the
illud                                        fowls of the air came and devoured it
                                             up.
                                             
4:5  aliud vero cecidit super petrosa        5.  And some fell on stony ground,
ubi non habuit terram multam et statim       where it had not much earth; and
exortum est quoniam non habebat              immediately it sprang up, because it
altitudinem terrae                           had no depth of earth:
                                             
4:6  et quando exortus est sol               6.  But when the sun was up, it was
exaestuavit et eo quod non haberet           scorched; and because it had no root,
radicem exaruit                              it withered away.
                                             
4:7  et aliud cecidit in spinas et           7.  And some fell among thorns, and the
ascenderunt spinae et offocaverunt           thorns grew up, and choked it, and it
illud et fructum non dedit                   yielded no fruit.
                                             
4:8  et aliud cecidit in terram bonam        8.  And other fell on good ground, and
et dabat fructum ascendentem et              did yield fruit that sprang up and
crescentem et adferebat unum triginta        increased; and brought forth, some
et unum sexaginta et unum centum             thirty, and some sixty, and some an
                                             hundred.
                                             
4:9  et dicebat qui habet aures              9.  And he said unto them, He that hath
audiendi audiat                              ears to hear, let him hear.
                                             
4:10  et cum esset singularis                10.  And when he was alone, they that
interrogaverunt eum hii qui cum eo           were about him with the twelve asked of
erant cum duodecim parabolas                 him the parable.
                                             
4:11  et dicebat eis vobis datum est         11.  And he said unto them, Unto you it
mysterium regni Dei illis autem qui          is given to know the mystery of the
foris sunt in parabolis omnia fiunt          kingdom of God: but unto them that are
                                             without, all these things are done in
                                             parables:
                                             
4:12  ut videntes videant et non             12.  That seeing they may see, and not
videant et audientes audiant et non          perceive; and hearing they may hear,
intellegant nequando convertantur et         and not understand; lest at any time
dimittantur eis peccata                      they should be converted, and their
                                             sins should be forgiven them.
                                             
4:13  et ait illis nescitis parabolam        13.  And he said unto them, Know ye not
hanc et quomodo omnes parabolas              this parable? and how then will ye know
cognoscetis                                  all parables?
                                             
4:14  qui seminat verbum seminat             14.  The sower soweth the word.

4:15  hii autem sunt qui circa viam ubi      15.  And these are they by the way
seminatur verbum et cum audierint            side, where the word is sown; but when
confestim venit Satanas et aufert            they have heard, Satan cometh
verbum quod seminatum est in corda eorum     immediately, and taketh away the word
                                             that was sown in their hearts.
                                             
4:16  et hii sunt similiter qui super        16.  And these are they likewise which
petrosa seminantur qui cum audierint         are sown on stony ground; who, when
verbum statim cum gaudio accipiunt illud     they have heard the word, immediately
                                             receive it with gladness;
                                             
4:17  et non habent radicem in se sed        17.  And have no root in themselves,
temporales sunt deinde orta                  and so endure but for a time:
tribulatione et persecutione propter         afterward, when affliction or
verbum confestim scandalizantur              persecution ariseth for the word's
                                             sake, immediately they are offended.
                                             
4:18  et alii sunt qui in spinis             18.  And these are they which are sown
seminantur hii sunt qui verbum audiunt       among thorns; such as hear the word,
                                             
4:19  et aerumnae saeculi et deceptio        19.  And the cares of this world, and
divitiarum et circa reliqua                  the deceitfulness of riches, and the
concupiscentiae introeuntes suffocant        lusts of other things entering in,
verbum et sine fructu efficitur              choke the word, and it becometh
                                             unfruitful.
                                             
4:20  et hii sunt qui super terram           20.  And these are they which are sown
bonam seminati sunt qui audiunt verbum       on good ground; such as hear the word,
et suscipiunt et fructificant unum           and receive it, and bring forth fruit,
triginta et unum sexaginta et unum           some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some
centum                                       an hundred.
                                             
4:21  et dicebat illis numquid venit         21.  And he said unto them, Is a candle
lucerna ut sub modio ponatur aut sub         brought to be put under a bushel, or
lecto nonne ut super candelabrum ponatur     under a bed? and not to be set on a
                                             candlestick?
                                             
4:22  non enim est aliquid absconditum       22.  For there is nothing hid, which
quod non manifestetur nec factum est         shall not be manifested; neither was
occultum sed ut in palam veniat              any thing kept secret, but that it
                                             should come abroad.
                                             
4:23  si quis habet aures audiendi           23.  If any man have ears to hear, let
audiat                                       him hear.
                                             
4:24  et dicebat illis videte quid           24.  And he said unto them, Take heed
audiatis in qua mensura mensi fueritis       what ye hear: with what measure ye
remetietur vobis et adicietur vobis          mete, it shall be measured to you: and
                                             unto you that hear shall more be given.
                                             
4:25  qui enim habet dabitur illi et         25.  For he that hath, to him shall be
qui non habet etiam quod habet               given: and he that hath not, from him
auferetur ab illo                            shall be taken even that which he hath.
                                             
4:26  et dicebat sic est regnum Dei          26.  And he said, So is the kingdom of
quemadmodum si homo iaciat sementem in       God, as if a man should cast seed into
terram                                       the ground;
                                             
4:27  et dormiat et exsurgat nocte ac        27.  And should sleep, and rise night
die et semen germinet et increscat dum       and day, and the seed should spring and
nescit ille                                  grow up, he knoweth not how.
                                             
4:28  ultro enim terra fructificat           28.  For the earth bringeth forth fruit
primum herbam deinde spicam deinde           of herself; first the blade, then the
plenum frumentum in spica                    ear, after that the full corn in the
                                             ear.
                                             
4:29  et cum se produxerit fructus           29.  But when the fruit is brought
statim mittit falcem quoniam adest           forth, immediately he putteth in the
messis                                       sickle, because the harvest is come.
                                             
4:30  et dicebat cui adsimilabimus           30.  And he said, Whereunto shall we
regnum Dei aut cui parabolae                 liken the kingdom of God? or with what
conparabimus illud                           comparison shall we compare it?
                                             
4:31  sicut granum sinapis quod cum          31.  It is like a grain of mustard
seminatum fuerit in terra minus est          seed, which, when it is sown in the
omnibus seminibus quae sunt in terra         earth, is less than all the seeds that
                                             be in the earth:
                                             
4:32  et cum seminatum fuerit ascendit       32.  But when it is sown, it groweth
et fit maius omnibus holeribus et facit      up, and becometh greater than all
ramos magnos ita ut possint sub umbra        herbs, and shooteth out great branches;
eius aves caeli habitare                     so that the fowls of the air may lodge
                                             under the shadow of it.
                                             
4:33  et talibus multis parabolis            33.  And with many such parables spake
loquebatur eis verbum prout poterant         he the word unto them, as they were
audire                                       able to hear it.
                                             
4:34  sine parabola autem non                34.  But without a parable spake he not
loquebatur eis seorsum autem discipulis      unto them: and when they were alone, he
suis disserebat omnia                        expounded all things to his disciples.
                                             
4:35  et ait illis illa die cum sero         35.  And the same day, when the even
esset factum transeamus contra               was come, he saith unto them, Let us
                                             pass over unto the other side.
                                             
4:36  et dimittentes turbam adsumunt         36.  And when they had sent away the
eum ita ut erat in navi et aliae naves       multitude, they took him even as he was
erant cum illo                               in the ship. And there were also with
                                             him other little ships.
                                             
4:37  et facta est procella magna venti      37.  And there arose a great storm of
et fluctus mittebat in navem ita ut          wind, and the waves beat into the ship,
impleretur navis                             so that it was now full.
                                             
4:38  et erat ipse in puppi supra            38.  And he was in the hinder part of
cervical dormiens et excitant eum et         the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they
dicunt ei magister non ad te pertinet        awake him, and say unto him, Master,
quia perimus                                 carest thou not that we perish?
                                             
4:39  et exsurgens comminatus est vento      39.  And he arose, and rebuked the
et dixit mari tace obmutesce et              wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be
cessavit ventus et facta est                 still. And the wind ceased, and there
tranquillitas magna                          was a great calm.
                                             
4:40  et ait illis quid timidi estis         40.  And he said unto them, Why are ye
necdum habetis fidem                         so fearful? how is it that ye have no
                                             faith?
                                             
4:40  (contiues) et timuerunt magno          41.  And they feared exceedingly, and
timore et dicebant ad alterutrum quis        said one to another, What manner of man
putas est iste quia et ventus et mare        is this, that even the wind and the sea
oboediunt ei                                 obey him?
