5:1  et venerunt trans fretum maris in       1.  And they came over unto the other
regionem Gerasenorum                         side of the sea, into the country of
                                             the Gadarenes.
                                             
5:2  et exeunti ei de navi statim            2.  And when he was come out of the
occurrit ei de monumentis homo in            ship, immediately there met him out of
spiritu inmundo                              the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
                                             
5:3  qui domicilium habebat in               3.  Who had his dwelling among the
monumentis et neque catenis iam              tombs; and no man could bind him, no,
quisquam eum poterat ligare                  not with chains:
                                             
5:4  quoniam saepe conpedibus et             4.  Because that he had been often
catenis vinctus disrupisset catenas et       bound with fetters and chains, and the
conpedes comminuisset et nemo poterat        chains had been plucked asunder by him,
eum domare                                   and the fetters broken in pieces:
                                             neither could any man tame him.
                                             
5:5  et semper nocte ac die in               5.  And always, night and day, he was
monumentis et in montibus erat clamans       in the mountains, and in the tombs,
et concidens se lapidibus                    crying, and cutting himself with stones.
                                             
5:6  videns autem Iesum a longe              6.  But when he saw Jesus afar off, he
cucurrit et adoravit eum                     ran and worshipped him,
                                             
5:7  et clamans voce magna dicit quid        7.  And cried with a loud voice, and
mihi et tibi Iesu Fili Dei summi adiuro      said, What have I to do with thee,
te per Deum ne me torqueas                   Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I
                                             adjure thee by God, that thou torment
                                             me not.
                                             
5:8  dicebat enim illi exi spiritus          8.  For he said unto him, Come out of
inmunde ab homine                            the man, thou unclean spirit.
                                             
5:9  et interrogabat eum quod tibi           9.  And he asked him, What is thy name?
nomen est et dicit ei Legio nomen mihi       And he answered, saying, My name is
est quia multi sumus                         Legion: for we are many.
                                             
5:10  et deprecabatur eum multum ne se       10.  And he besought him much that he
expelleret extra regionem                    would not send them away out of the
                                             country.
                                             
5:11  erat autem ibi circa montem grex       11.  Now there was there nigh unto the
porcorum magnus pascens                      mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
                                             
5:12  et deprecabantur eum spiritus          12.  And all the devils besought him,
dicentes mitte nos in porcos ut in eos       saying, Send us into the swine, that we
introeamus                                   may enter into them.
                                             
5:13  et concessit eis statim Iesus et       13.  And forthwith Jesus gave them
exeuntes spiritus inmundi introierunt        leave. And the unclean spirits went
in porcos et magno impetu grex               out, and entered into the swine: and
praecipitatus est in mare ad duo milia       the herd ran violently down a steep
et suffocati sunt in mare                    place into the sea, (they were about
                                             two thousand;) and were choked in the
                                             sea.
                                             
5:14  qui autem pascebant eos fugerunt       14.  And they that fed the swine fled,
et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et in           and told it in the city, and in the
agros et egressi sunt videre quid esset      country. And they went out to see what
facti                                        it was that was done.
                                             
5:15  et veniunt ad Iesum et vident          15.  And they come to Jesus, and see
illum qui a daemonio vexabatur sedentem      him that was possessed with the devil,
vestitum et sanae mentis et timuerunt        and had the legion, sitting, and
                                             clothed, and in his right mind: and
                                             they were afraid.
                                             
5:16  et narraverunt illis qui viderant      16.  And they that saw it told them how
qualiter factum esset ei qui daemonium       it befell to him that was possessed
habuerat et de porcis                        with the devil, and also concerning the
                                             swine.
                                             
5:17  et rogare eum coeperunt ut             17.  And they began to pray him to
discederet de finibus eorum                  depart out of their coasts.
                                             
5:18  cumque ascenderet navem coepit         18.  And when he was come into the
illum deprecari qui daemonio vexatus         ship, he that had been possessed with
fuerat ut esset cum illo                     the devil prayed him that he might be
                                             with him.
                                             
5:19  et non admisit eum sed ait illi        19.  Howbeit Jesus suffered him not,
vade in domum tuam ad tuos et adnuntia       but saith unto him, Go home to thy
illis quanta tibi Dominus fecerit et         friends, and tell them how great things
misertus sit tui                             the Lord hath done for thee, and hath
                                             had compassion on thee.
                                             
5:20  et abiit et coepit praedicare in       20.  And he departed, and began to
Decapoli quanta sibi fecisset Iesus et       publish in Decapolis how great things
omnes mirabantur                             Jesus had done for him: and all men did
                                             marvel.
                                             
5:21  et cum transcendisset Iesus in         21.  And when Jesus was passed over
navi rursus trans fretum convenit turba      again by ship unto the other side, much
multa ad illum et erat circa mare            people gathered unto him: and he was
                                             nigh unto the sea.
                                             
5:22  et venit quidam de archisynagogis      22.  And, behold, there cometh one of
nomine Iairus et videns eum procidit ad      the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by
pedes eius                                   name; and when he saw him, he fell at
                                             his feet,
                                             
5:23  et deprecabatur eum multum dicens      23.  And besought him greatly, saying,
quoniam filia mea in extremis est veni       My little daughter lieth at the point
inpone manus super eam ut salva sit et       of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy
vivat                                        hands on her, that she may be healed;
                                             and she shall live.
                                             
5:24  et abiit cum illo et sequebatur        24.  And Jesus went with him; and much
eum turba multa et conprimebant illum        people followed him, and thronged him.
                                             
5:25  et mulier quae erat in profluvio       25.  And a certain woman, which had an
sanguinis annis duodecim                     issue of blood twelve years,
                                             
5:26  et fuerat multa perpessa a             26.  And had suffered many things of
conpluribus medicis et erogaverat omnia      many physicians, and had spent all that
sua nec quicquam profecerat sed magis        she had, and was nothing bettered, but
deterius habebat                             rather grew worse,
                                             
5:27  cum audisset de Iesu venit in          27.  When she had heard of Jesus, came
turba retro et tetigit vestimentum eius      in the press behind, and touched his
                                             garment.
                                             
5:28  dicebat enim quia si vel               28.  For she said, If I may touch but
vestimentum eius tetigero salva ero          his clothes, I shall be whole.
                                             
5:29  et confestim siccatus est fons         29.  And straightway the fountain of
sanguinis eius et sensit corpore quod        her blood was dried up; and she felt in
sanata esset a plaga                         her body that she was healed of that
                                             plague.
                                             
5:30  et statim Iesus cognoscens in          30.  And Jesus, immediately knowing in
semet ipso virtutem quae exierat de eo       himself that virtue had gone out of
conversus ad turbam aiebat quis tetigit      him, turned him about in the press, and
vestimenta mea                               said, Who touched my clothes?
                                             
5:31  et dicebant ei discipuli sui           31.  And his disciples said unto him,
vides turbam conprimentem te et dicis        Thou seest the multitude thronging
quis me tetigit                              thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
                                             
5:32  et circumspiciebat videre eam          32.  And he looked round about to see
quae hoc fecerat                             her that had done this thing.
                                             
5:33  mulier autem timens et tremens         33.  But the woman fearing and
sciens quod factum esset in se venit et      trembling, knowing what was done in
procidit ante eum et dixit ei omnem          her, came and fell down before him, and
veritatem                                    told him all the truth.
                                             
5:34  ille autem dixit ei filia fides        34.  And he said unto her, Daughter,
tua te salvam fecit vade in pace et          thy faith hath made thee whole; go in
esto sana a plaga tua                        peace, and be whole of thy plague.
                                             
5:35  adhuc eo loquente veniunt ab           35.  While he yet spake, there came
archisynagogo dicentes quia filia tua        from the ruler of the synagogue's house
mortua est quid ultra vexas magistrum        certain which said, Thy daughter is
                                             dead: why troublest thou the Master any
                                             further?
                                             
5:36  Iesus autem verbo quod dicebatur       36.  As soon as Jesus heard the word
audito ait archisynagogo noli timere         that was spoken, he saith unto the
tantummodo crede                             ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid,
                                             only believe.
                                             
5:37  et non admisit quemquam sequi se       37.  And he suffered no man to follow
nisi Petrum et Iacobum et Iohannem           him, save Peter, and James, and John
fratrem Iacobi                               the brother of James.
                                             
5:38  et veniunt in domum archisynagogi      38.  And he cometh to the house of the
et videt tumultum et flentes et              ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the
heiulantes multum                            tumult, and them that wept and wailed
                                             greatly.
                                             
5:39  et ingressus ait eis quid              39.  And when he was come in, he saith
turbamini et ploratis puella non est         unto them, Why make ye this ado, and
mortua sed dormit                            weep? the damsel is not dead, but
                                             sleepeth.
                                             
5:40  et inridebant eum ipse vero            40.  And they laughed him to scorn. But
eiectis omnibus adsumit patrem et            when he had put them all out, he taketh
matrem puellae et qui secum erant et         the father and the mother of the
ingreditur ubi erat puella iacens            damsel, and them that were with him,
                                             and entereth in where the damsel was
                                             lying.
                                             
5:41  et tenens manum puellae ait illi       41.  And he took the damsel by the
talitha cumi quod est interpretatum          hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi;
puella tibi dico surge                       which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I
                                             say unto thee, arise.
                                             
5:42  et confestim surrexit puella et        42.  And straightway the damsel arose,
ambulabat erat autem annorum duodecim        and walked; for she was of the age of
et obstipuerunt stupore maximo               twelve years. And they were astonished
                                             with a great astonishment.
                                             
5:43  et praecepit illis vehementer ut       43.  And he charged them straitly that
nemo id sciret et dixit dari illi            no man should know it; and commanded
manducare                                    that something should be given her to
                                             eat.
