6:1  et egressus inde abiit in patriam       1.  And he went out from thence, and
suam et sequebantur illum discipuli sui      came into his own country; and his
                                             disciples follow him.
                                             
6:2  et facto sabbato coepit in              2.  And when the sabbath day was come,
synagoga docere et multi audientes           he began to teach in the synagogue: and
admirabantur in doctrina eius dicentes       many hearing him were astonished,
unde huic haec omnia et quae est             saying, From whence hath this man these
sapientia quae data est illi et              things? and what wisdom is this which
virtutes tales quae per manus eius           is given unto him, that even such
efficiuntur                                  mighty works are wrought by his hands?
                                             
6:3  nonne iste est faber filius Mariae      3.  Is not this the carpenter, the son
frater Iacobi et Ioseph et Iudae et          of Mary, the brother of James, and
Simonis nonne et sorores eius hic            Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are
nobiscum sunt et scandalizabantur in         not his sisters here with us? And they
illo                                         were offended at him.
                                             
6:4  et dicebat eis Iesus quia non est       4.  But Jesus, said unto them, A
propheta sine honore nisi in patria sua      prophet is not without honour, but in
et in cognatione sua et in domo sua          his own country, and among his own kin,
                                             and in his own house.
                                             
6:5  et non poterat ibi virtutem ullam       5.  And he could there do no mighty
facere nisi paucos infirmos inpositis        work, save that he laid his hands upon

6:6  et mirabatur propter                    6.  And he marvelled because of their
incredulitatem eorum                         unbelief. And he went round about the

6:7  et circumibat castella in circuitu      7.  And he called unto him the twelve,
docens et convocavit duodecim et coepit      and began to send them forth by two and
eos mittere binos et dabat illis             two; and gave them power over unclean
potestatem spirituum inmundorum              spirits;
                                             
6:8  et praecepit eis ne quid tollerent      8.  And commanded them that they should
in via nisi virgam tantum non peram non      take nothing for their journey, save a
panem neque in zona aes                      staff only; no scrip, no bread, no
                                             money in their purse:
                                             
6:9  sed calciatos sandaliis et ne           9.  But be shod with sandals; and not

6:10  et dicebat eis quocumque               10.  And he said unto them, In what
introieritis in domum illic manete           place soever ye enter into an house,
donec exeatis inde                           there abide till ye depart from that
                                             place.
                                             
6:11  et quicumque non receperint vos        11.  And whosoever shall not receive
nec audierint vos exeuntes inde              you, nor hear you, when ye depart
excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris in      thence, shake off the dust under your
testimonium illis                            feet for a testimony against them.
                                             Verily I say unto you, It shall be more
                                             tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the
                                             day of judgment, than for that city.
                                             
6:12  et exeuntes praedicabant ut            12.  And they went out, and preached
paenitentiam agerent                         that men should repent.
                                             
6:13  et daemonia multa eiciebant et         13.  And they cast out many devils, and
unguebant oleo multos aegrotos et            anointed with oil many that were sick,
sanabant                                     and healed them.
                                             
6:14  et audivit Herodes rex manifestum      14.  And king Herod heard of him; (for
enim factum est nomen eius et dicebat        his name was spread abroad:) and he
quia Iohannes Baptista resurrexit a          said, That John the Baptist was risen
mortuis et propterea inoperantur             from the dead, and therefore mighty
virtutes in illo                             works do shew forth themselves in him.
                                             
6:15  alii autem dicebant quia Helias        15.  Others said, That it is Elias. And
est alii vero dicebant propheta est          others said, That it is a prophet, or
quasi unus ex prophetis                      as one of the prophets.
                                             
6:16  quo audito Herodes ait quem ego        16.  But when Herod heard thereof, he
decollavi Iohannem hic a mortuis             said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he
resurrexit                                   is risen from the dead.
                                             
6:17  ipse enim Herodes misit ac tenuit      17.  For Herod himself had sent forth
Iohannem et vinxit eum in carcere            and laid hold upon John, and bound him
propter Herodiadem uxorem Philippi           in prison for Herodias' sake, his
fratris sui quia duxerat eam                 brother Philip's wife: for he had
                                             married her.
                                             
6:18  dicebat enim Iohannes Herodi non       18.  For John had said unto Herod, It
licet tibi habere uxorem fratris tui         is not lawful for thee to have thy
                                             brother's wife.
                                             
6:19  Herodias autem insidiabatur illi       19.  Therefore Herodias had a quarrel
et volebat occidere eum nec poterat          against him, and would have killed him;
                                             but she could not:
                                             
6:20  Herodes enim metuebat Iohannem         20.  For Herod feared John, knowing
sciens eum virum iustum et sanctum et        that he was a just man and an holy, and
custodiebat eum et audito eo multa           observed him; and when he heard him, he
faciebat et libenter eum audiebat            did many things, and heard him gladly.
                                             
6:21  et cum dies oportunus accidisset       21.  And when a convenient day was
Herodes natalis sui cenam fecit              come, that Herod on his birthday made a
principibus et tribunis et primis            supper to his lords, high captains, and
Galilaeae                                    chief estates of Galilee;
                                             
6:22  cumque introisset filia ipsius         22.  And when the daughter of the said
Herodiadis et saltasset et placuisset        Herodias came in, and danced, and
Herodi simulque recumbentibus rex ait        pleased Herod and them that sat with
puellae pete a me quod vis et dabo tibi      him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask
                                             of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will
                                             give it thee.
                                             
6:23  et iuravit illi quia quicquid          23.  And he sware unto her, Whatsoever
petieris dabo tibi licet dimidium regni      thou shalt ask of me, I will give it
mei                                          thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
                                             
6:24  quae cum exisset dixit matri suae      24.  And she went forth, and said unto
quid petam et illa dixit caput Iohannis      her mother, What shall I ask? And she
Baptistae                                    said, The head of John the Baptist.
                                             
6:25  cumque introisset statim cum           25.  And she came in straightway with
festinatione ad regem petivit dicens         haste unto the king, and asked, saying,
volo ut protinus des mihi in disco           I will that thou give me by and by in a
caput Iohannis Baptistae                     charger the head of John the Baptist.
                                             
6:26  et contristatus rex propter            26.  And the king was exceeding sorry;
iusiurandum et propter simul                 yet for his oath's sake, and for their
recumbentes noluit eam contristare           sakes which sat with him, he would not
                                             reject her.
                                             
6:27  sed misso speculatore praecepit        27.  And immediately the king sent an
adferri caput eius in disco et               executioner, and commanded his head to
decollavit eum in carcere                    be brought: and he went and beheaded
                                             him in the prison,
                                             
6:28  et adtulit caput eius in disco et      28.  And brought his head in a charger,
dedit illud puellae et puella dedit          and gave it to the damsel: and the
matri suae                                   damsel gave it to her mother.
                                             
6:29  quo audito discipuli eius              29.  And when his disciples heard of
venerunt et tulerunt corpus eius et          it, they came and took up his corpse,
posuerunt illud in monumento                 and laid it in a tomb.
                                             
6:30  et convenientes apostoli ad Iesum      30.  And the apostles gathered
renuntiaverunt illi omnia quae egerant       themselves together unto Jesus, and
et docuerant                                 told him all things, both what they had
                                             done, and what they had taught.
                                             
6:31  et ait illis venite seorsum in         31.  And he said unto them, Come ye
desertum locum et requiescite pusillum       yourselves apart into a desert place,
erant enim qui veniebant et rediebant        and rest a while: for there were many
multi et nec manducandi spatium habebant     coming and going, and they had no
                                             leisure so much as to eat.
                                             
6:32  et ascendentes in navi abierunt        32.  And they departed into a desert
in desertum locum seorsum                    place by ship privately.
                                             
6:33  et viderunt eos abeuntes et            33.  And the people saw them departing,
cognoverunt multi et pedestre et de          and many knew him, and ran afoot
omnibus civitatibus concurrerunt illuc       thither out of all cities, and outwent
et praevenerunt eos                          them, and came together unto him.
                                             
6:34  et exiens vidit multam turbam          34.  And Jesus, when he came out, saw
Iesus et misertus est super eos quia         much people, and was moved with
erant sicut oves non habentes pastorem       compassion toward them, because they
et coepit docere illos multa                 were as sheep not having a shepherd:
                                             and he began to teach them many things.
                                             
6:35  et cum iam hora multa fieret           35.  And when the day was now far
accesserunt discipuli eius dicentes          spent, his disciples came unto him, and
desertus est locus hic et iam hora           said, This is a desert place, and now
praeterivit                                  the time is far passed:
                                             
6:36  dimitte illos ut euntes in             36.  Send them away, that they may go
proximas villas et vicos emant sibi          into the country round about, and into
cibos quos manducent                         the villages, and buy themselves bread:
                                             for they have nothing to eat.
                                             
6:37  et respondens ait illis date           37.  He answered and said unto them,
illis manducare et dixerunt ei euntes        Give ye them to eat. And they say unto
emamus denariis ducentis panes et            him, Shall we go and buy two hundred
dabimus eis manducare                        pennyworth of bread, and give them to
                                             eat?
                                             
6:38  et dicit eis quot panes habetis        38.  He saith unto them, How many
ite et videte et cum cognovissent            loaves have ye? go and see. And when
dicunt quinque et duos pisces                they knew, they say, Five, and two
                                             fishes.
                                             
6:39  et praecepit illis ut accumbere        39.  And he commanded them to make all
facerent omnes secundum contubernia          sit down by companies upon the green
super viride faenum                          grass.
                                             
6:40  et discubuerunt in partes per          40.  And they sat down in ranks, by
centenos et per quinquagenos                 hundreds, and by fifties.
                                             
6:41  et acceptis quinque panibus et         41.  And when he had taken the five
duobus piscibus intuens in caelum            loaves and the two fishes, he looked up
benedixit et fregit panes et dedit           to heaven, and blessed, and brake the
discipulis suis ut ponerent ante eos et      loaves, and gave them to his disciples
duos pisces divisit omnibus                  to set before them; and the two fishes
                                             divided he among them all.
                                             
6:42  et manducaverunt omnes et              42.  And they did all eat, and were
saturati sunt                                filled.
                                             
6:43  et sustulerunt reliquias               43.  And they took up twelve baskets
fragmentorum duodecim cofinos plenos et      full of the fragments, and of the
de piscibus                                  fishes.
                                             
6:44  erant autem qui manducaverunt          44.  And they that did eat of the
quinque milia virorum                        loaves were about five thousand men.
                                             
6:45  et statim coegit discipulos suos       45.  And straightway he constrained his
ascendere navem ut praecederent eum          disciples to get into the ship, and to
trans fretum ad Bethsaidam dum ipse          go to the other side before unto
dimitteret populum                           Bethsaida, while he sent away the
                                             people.
                                             
6:46  et cum dimisisset eos abiit in         46.  And when he had sent them away, he
montem orare                                 departed into a mountain to pray.
                                             
6:47  et cum sero esset erat navis in        47.  And when even was come, the ship
medio mari et ipse solus in terra            was in the midst of the sea, and he
                                             alone on the land.
                                             
6:48  et videns eos laborantes in            48.  And he saw them toiling in rowing;
remigando erat enim ventus contrarius        for the wind was contrary unto them:
eis et circa quartam vigiliam noctis         and about the fourth watch of the night
venit ad eos ambulans super mare et          he cometh unto them, walking upon the
volebat praeterire eos                       sea, and would have passed by them.
                                             
6:49  at illi ut viderunt eum                49.  But when they saw him walking upon
ambulantem super mare putaverunt             the sea, they supposed it had been a
fantasma esse et exclamaverunt               spirit, and cried out:
                                             
6:50  omnes enim eum viderunt et             50.  For they all saw him, and were
conturbati sunt et statim locutus est        troubled. And immediately he talked
cum eis et dixit illis confidite ego         with them, and saith unto them, Be of
sum nolite timere                            good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
                                             
6:51  et ascendit ad illos in navem et       51.  And he went up unto them into the
cessavit ventus et plus magis intra se       ship; and the wind ceased: and they
stupebant                                    were sore amazed in themselves beyond
                                             measure, and wondered.
                                             
6:52  non enim intellexerant de panibus      52.  For they considered not the
erat enim cor illorum obcaecatum             miracle of the loaves: for their heart
                                             was hardened.
                                             
6:53  et cum transfretassent                 53.  And when they had passed over,
pervenerunt in terram Gennesareth et         they came into the land of Gennesaret,
adplicuerunt                                 and drew to the shore.
                                             
6:54  cumque egressi essent de navi          54.  And when they were come out of the
continuo cognoverunt eum                     ship, straightway they knew him,
                                             
6:55  et percurrentes universam              55.  And ran through that whole region
regionem illam coeperunt in grabattis        round about, and began to carry about
eos qui se male habebant circumferre         in beds those that were sick, where
ubi audiebant eum esse                       they heard he was.
                                             
6:56  et quocumque introibat in vicos        56.  And whithersoever he entered, into
vel in villas aut civitates in plateis       villages, or cities, or country, they
ponebant infirmos et deprecabantur eum       laid the sick in the streets, and
ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eius              besought him that they might touch if
tangerent et quotquot tangebant eum          it were but the border of his garment:
salvi fiebant                                and as many as touched him were made
                                             whole.
