7:1  et conveniunt ad eum Pharisaei et       1.  Then came together unto him the
quidam de scribis venientes ab               Pharisees, and certain of the scribes,
Hierosolymis                                 which came from Jerusalem.
                                             
7:2  et cum vidissent quosdam ex             2.  And when they saw some of his
discipulis eius communibus manibus id        disciples eat bread with defiled, that
est non lotis manducare panes                is to say, with unwashen, hands, they
vituperaverunt                               found fault.
                                             
7:3  Pharisaei enim et omnes Iudaei          3.  For the Pharisees, and all the
nisi crebro lavent manus non manducant       Jews, except they wash their hands oft,
tenentes traditionem seniorum                eat not, holding the tradition of the
                                             elders.
                                             
7:4  et a foro nisi baptizentur non          4.  And when they come from the market,
comedunt et alia multa sunt quae             except they wash, they eat not. And
tradita sunt illis servare baptismata        many other things there be, which they
calicum et urceorum et aeramentorum et       have received to hold, as the washing
lectorum                                     of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and
                                             of tables.
                                             
7:5  et interrogant eum Pharisaei et         5.  Then the Pharisees and scribes
scribae quare discipuli tui non              asked him, Why walk not thy disciples
ambulant iuxta traditionem seniorum sed      according to the tradition of the
communibus manibus manducant panem           elders, but eat bread with unwashen
                                             hands?
                                             
7:6  at ille respondens dixit eis bene       6.  He answered and said unto them,
prophetavit Esaias de vobis hypocritis       Well hath Esaias prophesied of you
sicut scriptum est populus hic labiis        hypocrites, as it is written, This
me honorat cor autem eorum longe est a       people honoureth me with their lips,
me                                           but their heart is far from me.
                                             
7:7  in vanum autem me colunt docentes       7.  Howbeit in vain do they worship me,
doctrinas praecepta hominum                  teaching for doctrines the commandments
                                             of men.
                                             
7:8  relinquentes enim mandatum Dei          8.  For laying aside the commandment of
tenetis traditionem hominum baptismata       God, ye hold the tradition of men, as
urceorum et calicum et alia similia his      the washing of pots and cups: and many
facitis multa                                other such like things ye do.
                                             
7:9  et dicebat illis bene irritum           9.  And he said unto them, Full well ye
facitis praeceptum Dei ut traditionem        reject the commandment of God, that ye
vestram servetis                             may keep your own tradition.
                                             
7:10  Moses enim dixit honora patrem         10.  For Moses said, Honour thy father
tuum et matrem tuam et qui maledixerit       and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth
patri aut matri morte moriatur               father or mother, let him die the death:
                                             
7:11  vos autem dicitis si dixerit homo      11.  But ye say, If a man shall say to
patri aut matri corban quod est donum        his father or mother, It is Corban,
quodcumque ex me tibi profuerit              that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever
                                             thou mightest be profited by me; he
                                             shall be free.
                                             
7:12  et ultra non dimittitis eum            12.  And ye suffer him no more to do
quicquam facere patri suo aut matri          ought for his father or his mother;
                                             
7:13  rescindentes verbum Dei per            13.  Making the word of God of none
traditionem vestram quam tradidistis et      effect through your tradition, which ye
similia huiusmodi multa facitis              have delivered: and many such like
                                             things do ye.
                                             
7:14  et advocans iterum turbam dicebat      14.  And when he had called all the
illis audite me omnes et intellegite         people unto him, he said unto them,
                                             Hearken unto me every one of you, and
                                             understand:
                                             
7:15  nihil est extra hominem introiens      15.  There is nothing from without a

7:16  si quis habet aures audiendi           16.  If any man have ears to hear, let

7:18  et ait illis sic et vos                18.  And he saith unto them, Are ye so
inprudentes estis non intellegitis quia      without understanding also? Do ye not
omne extrinsecus introiens in hominem        perceive, that whatsoever thing from
non potest eum communicare                   without entereth into the man, it
                                             cannot defile him;
                                             
7:19  quia non introit in cor eius sed       19.  Because it entereth not into his
in ventrem et in secessum exit purgans       heart, but into the belly, and goeth
omnes escas                                  out into the draught, purging all meats?
                                             
7:20  dicebat autem quoniam quae de          20.  And he said, That which cometh out
homine exeunt illa communicant hominem       of the man, that defileth the man.
                                             
7:21  ab intus enim de corde hominum         21.  For from within, out of the heart
cogitationes malae procedunt adulteria       of men, proceed evil thoughts,
fornicationes homicidia                      adulteries, fornications, murders,
                                             
7:22  furta avaritiae nequitiae dolus        22.  Thefts, covetousness, wickedness,
inpudicitia oculus malus blasphemia          deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye,
superbia stultitia                           blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
                                             
7:23  omnia haec mala ab intus               23.  All these evil things come from
procedunt et communicant hominem             within, and defile the man.
                                             
7:24  et inde surgens abiit in fines         24.  And from thence he arose, and went
Tyri et Sidonis et ingressus domum           into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and
neminem voluit scire et non potuit           entered into an house, and would have
latere                                       no man know it: but he could not be hid.
                                             
7:25  mulier enim statim ut audivit de       25.  For a certain woman, whose young
eo cuius habebat filia spiritum              daughter had an unclean spirit, heard
inmundum intravit et procidit ad pedes       of him, and came and fell at his feet:
eius                                         

7:26  erat autem mulier gentilis             26.  The woman was a Greek, a
Syrophoenissa genere et rogabat eum ut       Syrophenician by nation; and she
daemonium eiceret de filia eius              besought him that he would cast forth
                                             the devil out of her daughter.
                                             
7:27  qui dixit illi sine prius              27.  But Jesus said unto her, Let the
saturari filios non est enim bonum           children first be filled: for it is not
sumere panem filiorum et mittere canibus     meet to take the children's bread, and
                                             to cast it unto the dogs.
                                             
7:28  at illa respondit et dicit ei          28.  And she answered and said unto
utique Domine nam et catelli sub mensa       him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the

7:29  et ait illi propter hunc sermonem      29.  And he said unto her, For this
vade exiit daemonium de filia tua            saying go thy way; the devil is gone
                                             out of thy daughter.
                                             
7:30  et cum abisset domum suam invenit      30.  And when she was come to her
puellam iacentem supra lectum et             house, she found the devil gone out,
daemonium exisse                             and her daughter laid upon the bed.
                                             
7:31  et iterum exiens de finibus Tyri       31.  And again, departing from the

                                             of the coasts of Decapolis.
                                             
7:32  et adducunt ei surdum et mutum et      32.  And they bring unto him one that

7:33  et adprehendens eum de turba           33.  And he took him aside from the

7:35  et statim apertae sunt aures eius      35.  And straightway his ears were
et solutum est vinculum linguae eius et      opened, and the string of his tongue
loquebatur recte                             was loosed, and he spake plain.
                                             
7:36  et praecepit illis ne cui              36.  And he charged them that they
dicerent quanto autem eis praecipiebat       should tell no man: but the more he
tanto magis plus praedicabant                charged them, so much the more a great
                                             deal they published it;
                                             
7:37  et eo amplius admirabantur             37.  And were beyond measure
dicentes bene omnia fecit et surdos          astonished, saying, He hath done all
facit audire et mutos loqui                  things well: he maketh both the deaf to
                                             hear, and the dumb to speak.
