11:1  dico ergo numquid reppulit Deus        1.  I say then, Hath God cast away his
populum suum absit nam et ego                people? God forbid. For I also am an
Israhelita sum ex semine Abraham tribu       Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of
Beniamin                                     the tribe of Benjamin.

11:2  non reppulit Deus plebem suam          2.  God hath not cast away his people
quam praesciit an nescitis in Helia          which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the
quid dicit scriptura quemadmodum             scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh
interpellat Deum adversus Israhel            intercession to God against Israel
                                             saying,

11:3  Domine prophetas tuos occiderunt       3.  Lord, they have killed thy
altaria tua suffoderunt et ego relictus      prophets, and digged down thine altars;
sum solus et quaerunt animam meam            and I am left alone, and they seek my
                                             life.

11:4  sed quid dicit illi responsum          4.  But what saith the answer of God
divinum reliqui mihi septem milia            unto him? I have reserved to myself
virorum qui non curvaverunt genu Baal        seven thousand men, who have not bowed
                                             the knee to the image of Baal.

11:5  sic ergo et in hoc tempore             5.  Even so then at this present time
reliquiae secundum electionem gratiae        also there is a remnant according to
factae sunt                                  the election of grace.

11:6  si autem gratia non ex operibus        6.  And if by grace, then is it no more
alioquin gratia iam non est gratia           of works: otherwise grace is no more
                                             grace. But if it be of works, then it
                                             is no more grace: otherwise work is no
                                             more work.

11:7  quid ergo quod quaerebat Israhel       7.  What then? Israel hath not obtained
hoc non est consecutus electio autem         that which he seeketh for; but the
consecuta est ceteri vero excaecati sunt     election hath obtained it, and the rest
                                             were blinded.

11:8  sicut scriptum est dedit illis         8.  (According as it is written, God
Deus spiritum conpunctionis oculos ut        hath given them the spirit of slumber,
non videant et aures ut non audiant          eyes that they should not see, and ears
usque in hodiernum diem                      that they should not hear;) unto this
                                             day.

11:9  et David dicit fiat mensa eorum        9.  And David saith, Let their table be
in laqueum et in captionem et in             made a snare, and a trap, and a
scandalum et in retributionem illis          stumblingblock, and a recompence unto
                                             them:

11:10  obscurentur oculi eorum ne            10.  Let their eyes be darkened, that
videant et dorsum illorum semper incurva     they may not see, and bow down their
                                             back alway.

11:11  dico ergo numquid sic                 11.  I say then, Have they stumbled
offenderunt ut caderent absit sed            that they should fall? God forbid: but
illorum delicto salus gentibus ut illos      rather through their fall salvation is
aemulentur                                   come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke
                                             them to jealousy.

11:12  quod si delictum illorum              12.  Now if the fall of them be the
divitiae sunt mundi et deminutio eorum       riches of the world, and the
divitiae gentium quanto magis plenitudo      diminishing of them the riches of the
eorum                                        Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

11:13  vobis enim dico gentibus quamdiu      13.  For I speak to you Gentiles,
quidem ego sum gentium apostolus             inasmuch as I am the apostle of the
ministerium meum honorificabo                Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

11:14  si quo modo ad aemulandum             14.  If by any means I may provoke to
provocem carnem meam et salvos faciam        emulation them which are my flesh, and
aliquos ex illis                             might save some of them.

11:15  si enim amissio eorum                 15.  For if the casting away of them be
reconciliatio est mundi quae adsumptio       the reconciling of the world, what
nisi vita ex mortuis                         shall the receiving of them be, but
                                             life from the dead?

11:16  quod si delibatio sancta est et       16.  For if the firstfruit be holy, the
massa et si radix sancta et rami             lump is also holy: and if the root be
                                             holy, so are the branches.

11:17  quod si aliqui ex ramis fracti        17.  And if some of the branches be
sunt tu autem cum oleaster esses             broken off, and thou, being a wild
insertus es in illis et socius radicis       olive tree, wert graffed in among them,
et pinguidinis olivae factus es              and with them partakest of the root and
                                             fatness of the olive tree;

11:18  noli gloriari adversus ramos          18.  Boast not against the branches.
quod si gloriaris non tu radicem portas      But if thou boast, thou bearest not the
sed radix te                                 root, but the root thee.

11:19  dices ergo fracti sunt rami ut        19.  Thou wilt say then, The branches
ego inserar                                  were broken off, that I might be
                                             graffed in.

11:20  bene propter incredulitatem           20.  Well; because of unbelief they
fracti sunt tu autem fide stas noli          were broken off, and thou standest by
altum sapere sed time                        faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

11:21  si enim Deus naturalibus ramis        21.  For if God spared not the natural
non pepercit ne forte nec tibi parcat        branches, take heed lest he also spare
                                             not thee.

11:22  vide ergo bonitatem et                22.  Behold therefore the goodness and
severitatem Dei in eos quidem qui            severity of God: on them which fell,
ceciderunt severitatem in te autem           severity; but toward thee, goodness, if
bonitatem Dei si permanseris in              thou continue in his goodness:
bonitate alioquin et tu excideris            otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

11:23  sed et illi si non permanserint       23.  And they also, if they abide not
in incredulitate inserentur potens est       still in unbelief, shall be graffed in:
enim Deus iterum inserere illos              for God is able to graff them in again.

11:24  nam si tu ex naturali excisus es      24.  For if thou wert cut out of the
oleastro et contra naturam insertus es       olive tree which is wild by nature, and
in bonam olivam quanto magis hii             wert graffed contrary to nature into a
secundum naturam inserentur suae olivae      good olive tree: how much more shall
                                             these, which be the natural branches,
                                             be graffed into their own olive tree?

11:25  nolo enim vos ignorare fratres        25.  For I would not, brethren, that ye
mysterium hoc ut non sitis vobis ipsis       should be ignorant of this mystery,
sapientes quia caecitas ex parte             lest ye should be wise in your own
contigit in Israhel donec plenitudo          conceits; that blindness in part is
gentium intraret                             happened to Israel, until the fulness
                                             of the Gentiles be come in.

11:26  et sic omnis Israhel salvus           26.  And so all Israel shall be saved:
fieret sicut scriptum est veniet ex          as it is written, There shall come out
Sion qui eripiat avertet impietates ab       of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn
Iacob                                        away ungodliness from Jacob:

11:27  et hoc illis a me testamentum         27.  For this is my covenant unto them,
cum abstulero peccata eorum                  when I shall take away their sins.

11:28  secundum evangelium quidem            28.  As concerning the gospel, they are
inimici propter vos secundum electionem      enemies for your sakes: but as touching
autem carissimi propter patres               the election, they are beloved for the
                                             father's sakes.

11:29  sine paenitentia enim sunt dona       29.  For the gifts and calling of God
et vocatio Dei                               are without repentance.

11:30  sicut enim aliquando et vos non       30.  For as ye in times past have not
credidistis Deo nunc autem                   believed God, yet have now obtained
misericordiam consecuti estis propter        mercy through their unbelief:
illorum incredulitatem

11:31  ita et isti nunc non crediderunt      31.  Even so have these also now not
in vestram misericordiam ut et ipsi          believed, that through your mercy they
misericordiam consequantur                   also may obtain mercy.

11:32  conclusit enim Deus omnia in          32.  For God hath concluded them all in
incredulitatem ut omnium misereatur          unbelief, that he might have mercy upon
                                             all.

11:33  o altitudo divitiarum sapientiae      33.  O the depth of the riches both of
et scientiae Dei quam                        the wisdom and knowledge of God! how
inconprehensibilia sunt iudicia eius et      unsearchable are his judgments, and his
investigabiles viae eius                     ways past finding out!

11:34  quis enim cognovit sensum Domini      34.  For who hath known the mind of the
aut quis consiliarius eius fuit              Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

11:35  aut quis prior dedit illi et          35.  Or who hath first given to him,
retribuetur ei                               and it shall be recompensed unto him
                                             again?

11:36  quoniam ex ipso et per ipsum et       36.  For of him, and through him, and
in ipso omnia ipsi gloria in saecula         to him, are all things: to whom be
amen                                         glory for ever. Amen.
