5:1  iustificati igitur ex fide pacem        1.  Therefore being justified by faith,
habeamus ad Deum per Dominum nostrum         we have peace with God through our Lord
Iesum Christum                               Jesus Christ:

5:2  per quem et accessum habemus fide       2.  By whom also we have access by
in gratiam istam in qua stamus et            faith into this grace wherein we stand,
gloriamur in spe gloriae filiorum Dei        and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

5:3  non solum autem sed et gloriamur        3.  And not only so, but we glory in
in tribulationibus scientes quod             tribulations also: knowing that
tribulatio patientiam operatur               tribulation worketh patience;

5:4  patientia autem probationem             4.  And patience, experience; and
probatio vero spem                           experience, hope:

5:5  spes autem non confundit quia           5.  And hope maketh not ashamed;
caritas Dei diffusa est in cordibus          because the love of God is shed abroad
nostris per Spiritum Sanctum qui datus       in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which
est nobis                                    is given unto us.

5:6  ut quid enim Christus cum adhuc         6.  For when we were yet without
infirmi essemus secundum tempus pro          strength, in due time Christ died for
impiis mortuus est                           the ungodly.

5:7  vix enim pro iusto quis moritur         7.  For scarcely for a righteous man
nam pro bono forsitan quis et audeat         will one die: yet peradventure for a
mori                                         good man some would even dare to die.

5:8  commendat autem suam caritatem          8.  But God commendeth his love toward
Deus in nos quoniam cum adhuc                us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
peccatores essemus                           Christ died for us.

5:9  Christus pro nobis mortuus est          9.  Much more then, being now justified
multo igitur magis iustificati nunc in       by his blood, we shall be saved from
sanguine ipsius salvi erimus ab ira per      wrath through him.

5:10  si enim cum inimici essemus            10.  For if, when we were enemies, we
reconciliati sumus Deo per mortem Filii      were reconciled to God by the death of
eius multo magis reconciliati salvi          his Son, much more, being reconciled,
erimus in vita ipsius                        we shall be saved by his life.

5:11  non solum autem sed et gloriamur       11.  And not only so, but we also joy
in Deo per Dominum nostrum Iesum             in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Christum per quem nunc reconciliationem      by whom we have now received the
accepimus                                    atonement.

5:12  propterea sicut per unum hominem       12.  Wherefore, as by one man sin
in hunc mundum peccatum intravit et per      entered into the world, and death by
peccatum mors et ita in omnes homines        sin; and so death passed upon all men,
mors pertransiit in quo omnes                for that all have sinned:
peccaverunt

5:13  usque ad legem enim peccatum erat      13.  (For until the law sin was in the
in mundo peccatum autem non inputatur        world: but sin is not imputed when
cum lex non est                              there is no law.

5:14  sed regnavit mors ab Adam usque        14.  Nevertheless death reigned from
ad Mosen etiam in eos qui non                Adam to Moses, even over them that had
peccaverunt in similitudinem                 not sinned after the similitude of
praevaricationis Adae qui est forma          Adam's transgression, who is the figure
futuri                                       of him that was to come.

5:15  sed non sicut delictum ita et          15.  But not as the offence, so also is
donum si enim unius delicto multi            the free gift. For if through the
mortui sunt multo magis gratia Dei et        offence of one many be dead, much more
donum in gratiam unius hominis Iesu          the grace of God, and the gift by
Christi in plures abundavit                  grace, which is by one man, Jesus
                                             Christ, hath abounded unto many.

5:16  et non sicut per unum peccantem        16.  And not as it was by one that
ita et donum nam iudicium ex uno in          sinned, so is the gift: for the
condemnationem gratia autem ex multis        judgment was by one to condemnation,
delictis in iustificationem                  but the free gift is of many offences
                                             unto justification.

5:17  si enim in unius delicto mors          17.  For if by one man's offence death
regnavit per unum multo magis                reigned by one; much more they which
abundantiam gratiae et donationis et         receive abundance of grace and of the
iustitiae accipientes in vita regnabunt      gift of righteousness shall reign in
per unum Iesum Christum                      life by one, Jesus Christ.)

5:18  igitur sicut per unius delictum        18.  Therefore as by the offence of one
in omnes homines in condemnationem sic       judgment came upon all men to
et per unius iustitiam in omnes homines      condemnation; even so by the
in iustificationem vitae                     righteousness of one the free gift came
                                             upon all men unto justification of life.

5:19  sicut enim per inoboedientiam          19.  For as by one man's disobedience
unius hominis peccatores constituti          many were made sinners, so by the
sunt multi ita et per unius                  obedience of one shall many be made
oboeditionem iusti constituentur multi       righteous.

5:20  lex autem subintravit ut               20.  Moreover the law entered, that the
abundaret delictum ubi autem abundavit       offence might abound. But where sin
delictum superabundavit gratia               abounded, grace did much more abound:

5:21  ut sicut regnavit peccatum in          21.  That as sin hath reigned unto
morte ita et gratia regnet per               death, even so might grace reign
iustitiam in vitam aeternam per Iesum        through righteousness unto eternal life
Christum Dominum nostrum                     by Jesus Christ our Lord.
