4:1  quid ergo dicemus invenisse             1.  What shall we say then that Abraham
Abraham patrem nostrum secundum carnem       our father, as pertaining to the flesh,
                                             hath found?

4:2  si enim Abraham ex operibus             2.  For if Abraham were justified by
iustificatus est habet gloriam sed non       works, he hath whereof to glory; but
apud Deum                                    not before God.

4:3  quid enim scriptura dicit credidit      3.  For what saith the scripture?
Abraham Deo et reputatum est illi ad         Abraham believed God, and it was
iustitiam                                    counted unto him for righteousness.

4:4  ei autem qui operatur merces non        4.  Now to him that worketh is the
inputatur secundum gratiam sed secundum      reward not reckoned of grace, but of
debitum                                      debt.

4:5  ei vero qui non operatur credenti       5.  But to him that worketh not, but
autem in eum qui iustificat impium           believeth on him that justifieth the
reputatur fides eius ad iustitiam            ungodly, his faith is counted for
                                             righteousness.

4:6  sicut et David dicit beatitudinem       6.  Even as David also describeth the
hominis cui Deus accepto fert iustitiam      blessedness of the man, unto whom God
sine operibus                                imputeth righteousness without works,

4:7  beati quorum remissae sunt              7.  Saying, Blessed are they whose
iniquitates et quorum tecta sunt peccata     iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins
                                             are covered.

4:8  beatus vir cui non inputabit            8.  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord
Dominus peccatum                             will not impute sin.

4:9  beatitudo ergo haec in                  9.  Cometh this blessedness then upon
circumcisione an etiam in praeputio          the circumcision only, or upon the
dicimus enim quia reputata est Abrahae       uncircumcision also? for we say that
fides ad iustitiam                           faith was reckoned to Abraham for
                                             righteousness.

4:10  quomodo ergo reputata est in           10.  How was it then reckoned? when he

4:12  et sit pater circumcisionis non        12.  And the father of circumcision to
his tantum qui sunt ex circumcisione         them who are not of the circumcision
sed et his qui sectantur vestigia quae       only, but who also walk in the steps of

                                             of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

4:17  sicut scriptum est quia patrem         17.  (As it is written, I have made
multarum gentium posui te ante Deum cui      thee a father of many nations,) before
credidit qui vivificat mortuos et vocat      him whom he believed, even God, who
quae non sunt tamquam ea quae sunt           quickeneth the dead, and calleth those
                                             things which be not as though they were.

4:18  qui contra spem in spem credidit       18.  Who against hope believed in hope,
ut fieret pater multarum gentium             that he might become the father of many
secundum quod dictum est sic erit semen      nations, according to that which was
tuum                                         spoken, So shall thy seed be.

4:19  et non infirmatus fide                 19.  And being not weak in faith, he
consideravit corpus suum emortuum cum        considered not his own body now dead,
fere centum annorum esset et emortuam        when he was about an hundred years old,
vulvam Sarrae                                neither yet the deadness of Sarah's
                                             womb:

4:20  in repromissione etiam Dei non         20.  He staggered not at the promise of
haesitavit diffidentia sed confortatus       God through unbelief; but was strong in
est fide dans gloriam Deo                    faith, giving glory to God;

4:21  plenissime sciens quia quaecumque      21.  And being fully persuaded that,
promisit potens est et facere                what he had promised, he was able also
                                             to perform.

4:22  ideo et reputatum est illi ad          22.  And therefore it was imputed to
iustitiam                                    him for righteousness.

4:23  non est autem scriptum tantum          23.  Now it was not written for his
propter ipsum quia reputatum est illi        sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

4:24  sed et propter nos quibus              24.  But for us also, to whom it shall
reputabitur credentibus in eum qui           be imputed, if we believe on him that
suscitavit Iesum Dominum nostrum a           raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
mortuis

4:25  qui traditus est propter delicta       25.  Who was delivered for our
nostra et resurrexit propter                 offences, and was raised again for our
iustificationem nostram                      justification.
