8:1 nihil ergo nunc damnationis est 1. There is therefore now no
his qui sunt in Christo Iesu qui non condemnation to them which are in
secundum carnem ambulant Christ Jesus, who walk not after the
flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 lex enim Spiritus vitae in Christo 2. For the law of the Spirit of life
Iesu liberavit me a lege peccati et in Christ Jesus hath made me free from
mortis the law of sin and death.
8:3 nam quod inpossibile erat legis in 3. For what the law could not do, in
quo infirmabatur per carnem Deus Filium that it was weak through the flesh, God
suum mittens in similitudinem carnis sending his own Son in the likeness of
peccati et de peccato damnavit peccatum sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned
in carne sin in the flesh:
8:4 ut iustificatio legis impleretur 4. That the righteousness of the law
in nobis qui non secundum carnem might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
ambulamus sed secundum Spiritum after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:5 qui enim secundum carnem sunt quae 5. For they that are after the flesh
carnis sunt sapiunt qui vero secundum do mind the things of the flesh; but
Spiritum quae sunt Spiritus sentiunt they that are after the Spirit the
things of the Spirit.
8:6 nam prudentia carnis mors 6. For to be carnally minded is death;
prudentia autem Spiritus vita et pax but to be spiritually minded is life
and peace.
8:7 quoniam sapientia carnis 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity
inimicitia est in Deum legi enim Dei against God: for it is not subject to
non subicitur nec enim potest the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8:8 qui autem in carne sunt Deo 8. So then they that are in the flesh
placere non possunt cannot please God.
8:9 vos autem in carne non estis sed 9. But ye are not in the flesh, but in
in Spiritu si tamen Spiritus Dei the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of
habitat in vobis si quis autem Spiritum God dwell in you. Now if any man have
Christi non habet hic non est eius not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of
his.
8:10 si autem Christus in vobis est 10. And if Christ be in you, the body
corpus quidem mortuum est propter is dead because of sin; but the Spirit
peccatum spiritus vero vita propter is life because of righteousness.
iustificationem
8:11 quod si Spiritus eius qui 11. But if the Spirit of him that
suscitavit Iesum a mortuis habitat in raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in
vobis qui suscitavit Iesum Christum a you, he that raised up Christ from the
mortuis vivificabit et mortalia corpora dead shall also quicken your mortal
vestra propter inhabitantem Spiritum bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in
eius in vobis you.
8:12 ergo fratres debitores sumus non 12. Therefore, brethren, we are
carni ut secundum carnem vivamus debtors, not to the flesh, to live
after the flesh.
8:13 si enim secundum carnem vixeritis 13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye
moriemini si autem Spiritu facta carnis shall die: but if ye through the Spirit
mortificatis vivetis do mortify the deeds of the body, ye
shall live.
8:14 quicumque enim Spiritu Dei 14. For as many as are led by the
aguntur hii filii sunt Dei Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
8:15 non enim accepistis spiritum 15. For ye have not received the
servitutis iterum in timore sed spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye
accepistis Spiritum adoptionis filiorum have received the Spirit of adoption,
in quo clamamus Abba Pater whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
8:16 ipse Spiritus testimonium reddit 16. The Spirit itself beareth witness
spiritui nostro quod sumus filii Dei with our spirit, that we are the
children of God:
8:17 si autem filii et heredes heredes 17. And if children, then heirs; heirs
quidem Dei coheredes autem Christi si of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if
tamen conpatimur ut et conglorificemur so be that we suffer with him, that we
may be also glorified together.
8:18 existimo enim quod non sunt 18. For I reckon that the sufferings
condignae passiones huius temporis ad of this present time are not worthy to
futuram gloriam quae revelabitur in be compared with the glory which shall
nobis be revealed in us.
8:19 nam expectatio creaturae 19. For the earnest expectation of the
revelationem filiorum Dei expectat creature waiteth for the manifestation
of the sons of God.
8:20 vanitati enim creatura subiecta 20. For the creature was made subject
est non volens sed propter eum qui to vanity, not willingly, but by reason
subiecit in spem of him who hath subjected the same in
hope,
8:21 quia et ipsa creatura liberabitur 21. Because the creature itself also
a servitute corruptionis in libertatem shall be delivered from the bondage of
gloriae filiorum Dei corruption into the glorious liberty of
the children of God.
8:22 scimus enim quod omnis creatura 22. For we know that the whole
ingemescit et parturit usque adhuc creation groaneth and travaileth in
pain together until now.
8:23 non solum autem illa sed et nos 23. And not only they, but ourselves
ipsi primitias Spiritus habentes et also, which have the firstfruits of the
ipsi intra nos gemimus adoptionem Spirit, even we ourselves groan within
filiorum expectantes redemptionem ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to
corporis nostri wit, the redemption of our body.
8:24 spe enim salvi facti sumus spes 24. For we are saved by hope: but hope
autem quae videtur non est spes nam that is seen is not hope: for what a
quod videt quis quid sperat man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
8:25 si autem quod non videmus 25. But if we hope for that we see
speramus per patientiam expectamus not, then do we with patience wait for
it.
8:26 similiter autem et Spiritus 26. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth
adiuvat infirmitatem nostram nam quid our infirmities: for we know not what
oremus sicut oportet nescimus sed ipse we should pray for as we ought: but the
Spiritus postulat pro nobis gemitibus Spirit itself maketh intercession for
inenarrabilibus us with groanings which cannot be
uttered.
8:27 qui autem scrutatur corda scit 27. And he that searcheth the hearts
quid desideret Spiritus quia secundum knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
Deum postulat pro sanctis because he maketh intercession for the
saints according to the will of God.
8:28 scimus autem quoniam diligentibus 28. And we know that all things work
Deum omnia cooperantur in bonum his qui together for good to them that love
secundum propositum vocati sunt sancti God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose.
8:29 nam quos praescivit et 29. For whom he did foreknow, he also
praedestinavit conformes fieri imaginis did predestinate to be conformed to the
Filii eius ut sit ipse primogenitus in image of his Son, that he might be the
multis fratribus firstborn among many brethren.
8:30 quos autem praedestinavit hos et 30. Moreover whom he did predestinate,
vocavit et quos vocavit hos et them he also called: and whom he
iustificavit quos autem iustificavit called, them he also justified: and
illos et glorificavit whom he justified, them he also
glorified.
8:31 quid ergo dicemus ad haec si Deus 31. What shall we then say to these
pro nobis quis contra nos things? If God be for us, who can be
against us?
8:32 qui etiam Filio suo non pepercit 32. He that spared not his own Son,
sed pro nobis omnibus tradidit illum but delivered him up for us all, how
quomodo non etiam cum illo omnia nobis shall he not with him also freely give
donabit us all things?
8:33 quis accusabit adversus electos 33. Who shall lay any thing to the
Dei Deus qui iustificat charge of God's elect? It is God that
justifieth.
8:34 quis est qui condemnet Christus 34. Who is he that condemneth? It is
Iesus qui mortuus est immo qui Christ that died, yea rather, that is
resurrexit qui et est ad dexteram Dei risen again, who is even at the right
qui etiam interpellat pro nobis hand of God, who also maketh
intercession for us.
8:35 quis nos separabit a caritate 35. Who shall separate us from the
Christi tribulatio an angustia an love of Christ? shall tribulation, or
persecutio an fames an nuditas an distress, or persecution, or famine, or
periculum an gladius nakedness, or peril, or sword?
8:36 sicut scriptum est quia propter 36. As it is written, For thy sake we
te mortificamur tota die aestimati are killed all the day long; we are
sumus ut oves occisionis accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
8:37 sed in his omnibus superamus 37. Nay, in all these things we are
propter eum qui dilexit nos more than conquerors through him that
loved us.
8:38 certus sum enim quia neque mors 38. For I am persuaded, that neither
neque vita neque angeli neque death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principatus neque instantia neque principalities, nor powers, nor things
futura neque fortitudines present, nor things to come,
8:39 neque altitudo neque profundum 39. Nor height, nor depth, nor any
neque creatura alia poterit nos other creature, shall be able to
separare a caritate Dei quae est in separate us from the love of God, which
Christo Iesu Domino nostro is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
