7:1 an ignoratis fratres scientibus 1. Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak
enim legem loquor quia lex in homine to them that know the law,) how that
dominatur quanto tempore vivit the law hath dominion over a man as
long as he liveth?
7:2 nam quae sub viro est mulier 2. For the woman which hath an husband
vivente viro alligata est legi si autem is bound by the law to her husband so
mortuus fuerit vir soluta est a lege long as he liveth; but if the husband
viri be dead, she is loosed from the law of
her husband.
7:3 igitur vivente viro vocabitur 3. So then if, while her husband
adultera si fuerit cum alio viro si liveth, she be married to another man,
autem mortuus fuerit vir eius liberata she shall be called an adulteress: but
est a lege ut non sit adultera si if her husband be dead, she is free
fuerit cum alio viro from that law; so that she is no
adulteress, though she be married to
another man.
7:4 itaque fratres mei et vos 4. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are
mortificati estis legi per corpus become dead to the law by the body of
Christi ut sitis alterius qui ex Christ; that ye should be married to
mortuis resurrexit ut fructificaremus another, even to him who is raised from
Deo the dead, that we should bring forth
fruit unto God.
7:5 cum enim essemus in carne 5. For when we were in the flesh, the
passiones peccatorum quae per legem motions of sins, which were by the law,
erant operabantur in membris nostris ut did work in our members to bring forth
fructificarent morti fruit unto death.
7:6 nunc autem soluti sumus a lege 6. But now we are delivered from the
morientes in quo detinebamur ita ut law, that being dead wherein we were
serviamus in novitate spiritus et non held; that we should serve in newness
in vetustate litterae of spirit, and not in the oldness of
the letter.
7:7 quid ergo dicemus lex peccatum est 7. What shall we say then? Is the law
absit sed peccatum non cognovi nisi per sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known
legem nam concupiscentiam nesciebam sin, but by the law: for I had not
nisi lex diceret non concupisces known lust, except the law had said,
Thou shalt not covet.
7:8 occasione autem accepta peccatum 8. But sin, taking occasion by the
per mandatum operatum est in me omnem commandment, wrought in me all manner
concupiscentiam sine lege enim peccatum of concupiscence. For without the law
mortuum erat sin was dead.
7:9 ego autem vivebam sine lege 9. For I was alive without the law
aliquando sed cum venisset mandatum once: but when the commandment came,
peccatum revixit sin revived, and I died.
7:10 ego autem mortuus sum et inventum 10. And the commandment, which was
est mihi mandatum quod erat ad vitam ordained to life, I found to be unto
hoc esse ad mortem death.
7:11 nam peccatum occasione accepta 11. For sin, taking occasion by the
per mandatum seduxit me et per illud commandment, deceived me, and by it
occidit slew me.
7:12 itaque lex quidem sancta et 12. Wherefore the law is holy, and the
mandatum sanctum et iustum et bonum commandment holy, and just, and good.
7:13 quod ergo bonum est mihi factum 13. Was then that which is good made
est mors absit sed peccatum ut appareat death unto me? God forbid. But sin,
peccatum per bonum mihi operatum est that it might appear sin, working death
mortem ut fiat supra modum peccans in me by that which is good; that sin
peccatum per mandatum by the commandment might become
exceeding sinful.
7:14 scimus enim quod lex spiritalis 14. For we know that the law is
est ego autem carnalis sum venundatus spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under
sub peccato sin.
7:15 quod enim operor non intellego 15. For that which I do I allow not:
non enim quod volo hoc ago sed quod odi for what I would, that do I not; but
illud facio what I hate, that do I.
7:16 si autem quod nolo illud facio 16. If then I do that which I would
consentio legi quoniam bona not, I consent unto the law that it is
good.
7:17 nunc autem iam non ego operor 17. Now then it is no more I that do
illud sed quod habitat in me peccatum it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:18 scio enim quia non habitat in me 18. For I know that in me (that is, in
hoc est in carne mea bonum nam velle my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for
adiacet mihi perficere autem bonum non to will is present with me; but how to
invenio perform that which is good I find not.
7:19 non enim quod volo bonum hoc 19. For the good that I would I do
facio sed quod nolo malum hoc ago not: but the evil which I would not,
that I do.
7:20 si autem quod nolo illud facio 20. Now if I do that I would not, it
non ego operor illud sed quod habitat is no more I that do it, but sin that
in me peccatum dwelleth in me.
7:21 invenio igitur legem volenti mihi 21. I find then a law, that, when I
facere bonum quoniam mihi malum adiacet would do good, evil is present with me.
7:22 condelector enim legi Dei 22. For I delight in the law of God
secundum interiorem hominem after the inward man:
7:23 video autem aliam legem in 23. But I see another law in my
membris meis repugnantem legi mentis members, warring against the law of my
meae et captivantem me in lege peccati mind, and bringing me into captivity to
quae est in membris meis the law of sin which is in my members.
7:24 infelix ego homo quis me 24. O wretched man that I am! who
liberabit de corpore mortis huius shall deliver me from the body of this
death?
7:25 gratia Dei per Iesum Christum 25. I thank God through Jesus Christ
Dominum nostrum igitur ego ipse mente our Lord. So then with the mind I
servio legi Dei carne autem legi peccati myself serve the law of God; but with
the flesh the law of sin.
