13:1 omnis anima potestatibus 1. Let every soul be subject unto the
sublimioribus subdita sit non est enim higher powers. For there is no power
potestas nisi a Deo quae autem sunt a but of God: the powers that be are
Deo ordinatae sunt ordained of God.
13:2 itaque qui resistit potestati Dei 2. Whosoever therefore resisteth the
ordinationi resistit qui autem power, resisteth the ordinance of God:
resistunt ipsi sibi damnationem and they that resist shall receive to
adquirunt themselves damnation.
13:3 nam principes non sunt timori 3. For rulers are not a terror to good
boni operis sed mali vis autem non works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then
timere potestatem bonum fac et habebis not be afraid of the power? do that
laudem ex illa which is good, and thou shalt have
praise of the same:
13:4 Dei enim minister est tibi in 4. For he is the minister of God to
bonum si autem male feceris time non thee for good. But if thou do that
enim sine causa gladium portat Dei enim which is evil, be afraid; for he
minister est vindex in iram ei qui beareth not the sword in vain: for he
malum agit is the minister of God, a revenger to
execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
13:5 ideo necessitate subditi estote 5. Wherefore ye must needs be subject,
non solum propter iram sed et propter not only for wrath, but also for
conscientiam conscience sake.
13:6 ideo enim et tributa praestatis 6. For for this cause pay ye tribute
ministri enim Dei sunt in hoc ipsum also: for they are God's ministers,
servientes attending continually upon this very
thing.
13:7 reddite omnibus debita cui 7. Render therefore to all their dues:
tributum tributum cui vectigal vectigal tribute to whom tribute is due; custom
cui timorem timorem cui honorem honorem to whom custom; fear to whom fear;
honour to whom honour.
13:8 nemini quicquam debeatis nisi ut 8. Owe no man any thing, but to love
invicem diligatis qui enim diligit one another: for he that loveth another
proximum legem implevit hath fulfilled the law.
13:9 nam non adulterabis non occides 9. For this, Thou shalt not commit
non furaberis non concupisces et si adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou
quod est aliud mandatum in hoc verbo shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear
instauratur diliges proximum tuum false witness, Thou shalt not covet;
tamquam te ipsum and if there be any other commandment,
it is briefly comprehended in this
saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself.
13:10 dilectio proximo malum non 10. Love worketh no ill to his
operatur plenitudo ergo legis est neighbour: therefore love is the
dilectio fulfilling of the law.
13:11 et hoc scientes tempus quia hora 11. And that, knowing the time, that
est iam nos de somno surgere nunc enim now it is high time to awake out of
propior est nostra salus quam cum sleep: for now is our salvation nearer
credidimus than when we believed.
13:12 nox praecessit dies autem 12. The night is far spent, the day is
adpropiavit abiciamus ergo opera at hand: let us therefore cast off the
tenebrarum et induamur arma lucis works of darkness, and let us put on
the armour of light.
13:13 sicut in die honeste ambulemus 13. Let us walk honestly, as in the
non in comesationibus et ebrietatibus day; not in rioting and drunkenness,
non in cubilibus et inpudicitiis non in not in chambering and wantonness, not
contentione et aemulatione in strife and envying.
13:14 sed induite Dominum Iesum 14. But put ye on the Lord Jesus
Christum et carnis curam ne feceritis Christ, and make not provision for the
in desideriis flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
