9:1 veritatem dico in Christo non 1. I say the truth in Christ, I lie
mentior testimonium mihi perhibente not, my conscience also bearing me
conscientia mea in Spiritu Sancto witness in the Holy Ghost,
9:2 quoniam tristitia est mihi magna 2. That I have great heaviness and
et continuus dolor cordi meo continual sorrow in my heart.
9:3 optabam enim ipse ego anathema 3. For I could wish that myself were
esse a Christo pro fratribus meis qui accursed from Christ for my brethren,
sunt cognati mei secundum carnem my kinsmen according to the flesh:
9:4 qui sunt Israhelitae quorum 4. Who are Israelites; to whom
adoptio est filiorum et gloria et pertaineth the adoption, and the glory,
testamenta et legislatio et obsequium and the covenants, and the giving of
et promissa the law, and the service of God, and
the promises;
9:5 quorum patres et ex quibus 5. Whose are the fathers, and of whom
Christus secundum carnem qui est super as concerning the flesh Christ came,
omnia Deus benedictus in saecula amen who is over all, God blessed for ever.
Amen.
9:6 non autem quod exciderit verbum 6. Not as though the word of God hath
Dei non enim omnes qui ex Israhel hii taken none effect. For they are not all
sunt Israhel Israel, which are of Israel:
9:7 neque quia semen sunt Abrahae 7. Neither, because they are the seed
omnes filii sed in Isaac vocabitur tibi of Abraham, are they all children: but,
semen In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
9:8 id est non qui filii carnis hii 8. That is, They which are the
filii Dei sed qui filii sunt children of the flesh, these are not
promissionis aestimantur in semine the children of God: but the children
of the promise are counted for the seed.
9:9 promissionis enim verbum hoc est 9. For this is the word of promise, At
secundum hoc tempus veniam et erit this time will I come, and Sarah shall
Sarrae filius have a son.
9:10 non solum autem sed et Rebecca ex 10. And not only this; but when
uno concubitum habens Isaac patre nostro Rebecca also had conceived by one, even
by our father Isaac;
9:11 cum enim nondum nati fuissent aut 11. (For the children being not yet
aliquid egissent bonum aut malum ut born, neither having done any good or
secundum electionem propositum Dei evil, that the purpose of God according
maneret to election might stand, not of works,
but of him that calleth;)
9:12 non ex operibus sed ex vocante 12. It was said unto her, The elder
dictum est ei quia maior serviet minori shall serve the younger.
9:13 sicut scriptum est Iacob dilexi 13. As it is written, Jacob have I
Esau autem odio habui loved, but Esau have I hated.
9:14 quid ergo dicemus numquid 14. What shall we say then? Is there
iniquitas apud Deum absit unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
9:15 Mosi enim dicit miserebor cuius 15. For he saith to Moses, I will have
misereor et misericordiam praestabo mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I
cuius miserebor will have compassion on whom I will
have compassion.
9:16 igitur non volentis neque 16. So then it is not of him that
currentis sed miserentis Dei willeth, nor of him that runneth, but
of God that sheweth mercy.
9:17 dicit enim scriptura Pharaoni 17. For the scripture saith unto
quia in hoc ipsum excitavi te ut Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose
ostendam in te virtutem meam et ut have I raised thee up, that I might
adnuntietur nomen meum in universa terra shew my power in thee, and that my name
might be declared throughout all the
earth.
9:18 ergo cuius vult miseretur et quem 18. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he
vult indurat will have mercy, and whom he will he
hardeneth.
9:19 dicis itaque mihi quid adhuc 19. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why
queritur voluntati enim eius quis doth he yet find fault? For who hath
resistit resisted his will?
9:20 o homo tu quis es qui respondeas 20. Nay but, O man, who art thou that
Deo numquid dicit figmentum ei qui se repliest against God? Shall the thing
finxit quid me fecisti sic formed say to him that formed it, Why
hast thou made me thus?
9:21 an non habet potestatem figulus 21. Hath not the potter power over the
luti ex eadem massa facere aliud quidem clay, of the same lump to make one
vas in honorem aliud vero in contumeliam vessel unto honour, and another unto
dishonour?
9:22 quod si volens Deus ostendere 22. What if God, willing to shew his
iram et notam facere potentiam suam wrath, and to make his power known,
sustinuit in multa patientia vasa irae endured with much longsuffering the
aptata in interitum vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
9:23 ut ostenderet divitias gloriae 23. And that he might make known the
suae in vasa misericordiae quae riches of his glory on the vessels of
praeparavit in gloriam mercy, which he had afore prepared unto
glory,
9:24 quos et vocavit nos non solum ex 24. Even us, whom he hath called, not
Iudaeis sed etiam ex gentibus of the Jews only, but also of the
Gentiles?
9:25 sicut in Osee dicit vocabo non 25. As he saith also in Osee, I will
plebem meam plebem meam et non call them my people, which were not my
misericordiam consecutam misericordiam people; and her beloved, which was not
consecutam beloved.
9:26 et erit in loco ubi dictum est 26. And it shall come to pass, that in
eis non plebs mea vos ibi vocabuntur the place where it was said unto them,
filii Dei vivi Ye are not my people; there shall they
be called the children of the living
God.
9:27 Esaias autem clamat pro Israhel 27. Esaias also crieth concerning
si fuerit numerus filiorum Israhel Israel, Though the number of the
tamquam harena maris reliquiae salvae children of Israel be as the sand of
fient the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
9:28 verbum enim consummans et 28. For he will finish the work, and
brevians in aequitate quia verbum cut it short in righteousness: because
breviatum faciet Dominus super terram a short work will the Lord make upon
the earth.
9:29 et sicut praedixit Esaias nisi 29. And as Esaias said before, Except
Dominus Sabaoth reliquisset nobis semen the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed,
sicut Sodoma facti essemus et sicut we had been as Sodoma, and been made
Gomorra similes fuissemus like unto Gomorrha.
9:30 quid ergo dicemus quod gentes 30. What shall we say then? That the
quae non sectabantur iustitiam Gentiles, which followed not after
adprehenderunt iustitiam iustitiam righteousness, have attained to
autem quae ex fide est righteousness, even the righteousness
which is of faith.
9:31 Israhel vero sectans legem 31. But Israel, which followed after
iustitiae in legem iustitiae non the law of righteousness, hath not
pervenit attained to the law of righteousness.
9:32 quare quia non ex fide sed quasi 32. Wherefore? Because they sought it
ex operibus offenderunt in lapidem not by faith, but as it were by the
offensionis works of the law. For they stumbled at
that stumblingstone;
9:33 sicut scriptum est ecce pono in 33. As it is written, Behold, I lay in
Sion lapidem offensionis et petram Sion a stumblingstone and rock of
scandali et omnis qui credit in eum non offence: and whosoever believeth on him
confundetur shall not be ashamed.
