3:1 quid ergo amplius est Iudaeo aut 1. What advantage then hath the Jew?
quae utilitas circumcisionis or what profit is there of circumcision?

3:2 multum per omnem modum primum 2. Much every way: chiefly, because
quidem quia credita sunt illis eloquia that unto them were committed the
Dei                                          oracles of God.

3:3 quid enim si quidam illorum non 3. For what if some did not believe?
crediderunt numquid incredulitas shall their unbelief make the faith of
illorum fidem Dei evacuabit absit God without effect?

3:4 est autem Deus verax omnis autem 4. God forbid: yea, let God be true,
homo mendax sicut scriptum est ut but every man a liar; as it is written,
iustificeris in sermonibus tuis et That thou mightest be justified in thy
vincas cum iudicaris sayings, and mightest overcome when
                                             thou art judged.

3:5 si autem iniquitas nostra 5. But if our unrighteousness commend
iustitiam Dei commendat quid dicemus the righteousness of God, what shall we
numquid iniquus Deus qui infert iram say? Is God unrighteous who taketh
secundum hominem dico vengeance? (I speak as a man)

3:6 absit alioquin quomodo iudicabit 6. God forbid: for then how shall God
Deus mundum                                  judge the world?

3:7 si enim veritas Dei in meo 7. For if the truth of God hath more
mendacio abundavit in gloriam ipsius         abounded through my lie unto his glory;
quid adhuc et ego tamquam peccator why yet am I also judged as a sinner?
iudicor

3:8 et non sicut blasphemamur et sicut 8. And not rather, (as we be
aiunt nos quidam dicere faciamus mala slanderously reported, and as some
ut veniant bona quorum damnatio iusta affirm that we say,) Let us do evil,
est that good may come? whose damnation is
                                             just.

3:9 quid igitur praecellimus eos 9. What then? are we better than they?
nequaquam causati enim sumus Iudaeos et No, in no wise: for we have before
Graecos omnes sub peccato esse proved both Jews and Gentiles, that
                                             they are all under sin;

3:10 sicut scriptum est quia non est 10. As it is written, There is none
iustus quisquam righteous, no, not one:

3:11 non est intellegens non est 11. There is none that understandeth,
requirens Deum there is none that seeketh after God.

3:12 omnes declinaverunt simul 12. They are all gone out of the way,
inutiles facti sunt non est qui faciat       they are together become unprofitable;
bonum non est usque ad unum there is none that doeth good, no, not
                                             one.

3:13  sepulchrum patens est guttur           13.  Their throat is an open sepulchre;
eorum linguis suis dolose agebant with their tongues they have used
venenum aspidum sub labiis eorum deceit; the poison of asps is under
                                             their lips:

3:14 quorum os maledictione et 14. Whose mouth is full of cursing and
amaritudine plenum est                       bitterness:

3:15 veloces pedes eorum ad 15. Their feet are swift to shed blood:
effundendum sanguinem

3:16 contritio et infelicitas in viis 16. Destruction and misery are in
eorum                                        their ways:

3:17 et viam pacis non cognoverunt 17. And the way of peace have they not
                                             known:

3:18 non est timor Dei ante oculos 18. There is no fear of God before
eorum                                        their eyes.

3:19 scimus autem quoniam quaecumque 19. Now we know that what things
lex loquitur his qui in lege sunt soever the law saith, it saith to them
loquitur ut omne os obstruatur et who are under the law: that every mouth
subditus fiat omnis mundus Deo may be stopped, and all the world may
                                             become guilty before God.

3:20 quia ex operibus legis non 20. Therefore by the deeds of the law
iustificabitur omnis caro coram illo there shall no flesh be justified in
per legem enim cognitio peccati his sight: for by the law is the
                                             knowledge of sin.

3:21 nunc autem sine lege iustitia Dei 21. But now the righteousness of God
manifestata est testificata a lege et without the law is manifested, being
prophetis                                    witnessed by the law and the prophets;

3:22 iustitia autem Dei per fidem Iesu 22. Even the righteousness of God
Christi super omnes qui credunt non which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto
enim est distinctio all and upon all them that believe: for
                                             there is no difference:

3:23 omnes enim peccaverunt et egent 23. For all have sinned, and come
gloriam Dei                                  short of the glory of God;

3:24 iustificati gratis per gratiam 24. Being justified freely by his
ipsius per redemptionem quae est in grace through the redemption that is in
Christo Iesu                                 Christ Jesus:

3:25 quem proposuit Deus 25. Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiationem per fidem in sanguine propitiation through faith in his
ipsius ad ostensionem iustitiae suae blood, to declare his righteousness for
propter remissionem praecedentium the remission of sins that are past,
delictorum                                   through the forbearance of God;

3:26 in sustentatione Dei ad 26. To declare, I say, at this time
ostensionem iustitiae eius in hoc his righteousness: that he might be
tempore ut sit ipse iustus et just, and the justifier of him which
iustificans eum qui ex fide est Iesu believeth in Jesus.

3:27 ubi est ergo gloriatio exclusa 27. Where is boasting then? It is
est per quam legem factorum non sed per excluded. By what law? of works? Nay:
legem fidei but by the law of faith.

3:28 arbitramur enim iustificari 28. Therefore we conclude that a man
hominem per fidem sine operibus legis is justified by faith without the deeds
                                             of the law.

3:29 an Iudaeorum Deus tantum nonne et 29. Is he the God of the Jews only? is
gentium immo et gentium he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of
                                             the Gentiles also:

3:30 quoniam quidem unus Deus qui 30. Seeing it is one God, which shall
iustificabit circumcisionem ex fide et justify the circumcision by faith, and
praeputium per fidem uncircumcision through faith.

3:31 legem ergo destruimus per fidem 31. Do we then make void the law
absit sed legem statuimus through faith? God forbid: yea, we
                                             establish the law.
