11:1 erat autem quidam languens 1. Now a certain man was sick, named
Lazarus a Bethania de castello Mariae Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary
et Marthae sororis eius and her sister Martha.

11:2 Maria autem erat quae unxit 2. (It was that Mary which anointed
Dominum unguento et extersit pedes eius the Lord with ointment, and wiped his
capillis suis cuius frater Lazarus feet with her hair, whose brother
infirmabatur Lazarus was sick.)

11:3 miserunt ergo sorores ad eum 3. Therefore his sisters sent unto
dicentes Domine ecce quem amas him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou
infirmatur lovest is sick.

11:4 audiens autem Iesus dixit eis 4. When Jesus heard that, he said,
infirmitas haec non est ad mortem sed This sickness is not unto death, but
pro gloria Dei ut glorificetur Filius for the glory of God, that the Son of
Dei per eam God might be glorified thereby.

11:5 diligebat autem Iesus Martham et 5. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her
sororem eius Mariam et Lazarum sister, and Lazarus.

11:6 ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur 6. When he had heard therefore that he
tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus was sick, he abode two days still in
diebus the same place where he was.

11:7 deinde post haec dicit discipulis 7. Then after that saith he to his
suis eamus in Iudaeam iterum disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

11:8 dicunt ei discipuli rabbi nunc 8. His disciples say unto him, Master,
quaerebant te Iudaei lapidare et iterum      the Jews of late sought to stone thee;
vadis illuc and goest thou thither again?

11:9 respondit Iesus nonne duodecim 9. Jesus answered, Are there not
horae sunt diei si quis ambulaverit in twelve hours in the day? If any man
die non offendit quia lucem huius mundi walk in the day, he stumbleth not,
videt because he seeth the light of this
                                             world.

11:10 si autem ambulaverit nocte 10. But if a man walk in the night, he
offendit quia lux non est in eo stumbleth, because there is no light in
                                             him.

11:11 haec ait et post hoc dicit eis 11. These things said he: and after
Lazarus amicus noster dormit sed vado that he saith unto them, Our friend
ut a somno exsuscitem eum Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may
                                             awake him out of sleep.

11:12 dixerunt ergo discipuli eius 12. Then said his disciples, Lord, if
Domine si dormit salvus erit he sleep, he shall do well.

11:13 dixerat autem Iesus de morte 13. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death:
eius illi autem putaverunt quia de but they thought that he had spoken of
dormitione somni diceret taking of rest in sleep.

11:14 tunc ergo dixit eis Iesus 14. Then said Jesus unto them plainly,
manifeste Lazarus mortuus est Lazarus is dead.

11:15 et gaudeo propter vos ut 15. And I am glad for your sakes that
credatis quoniam non eram ibi sed eamus I was not there, to the intent ye may
ad eum believe; nevertheless let us go unto
                                             him.

11:16 dixit ergo Thomas qui dicitur 16. Then said Thomas, which is called
Didymus ad condiscipulos eamus et nos Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let
ut moriamur cum eo us also go, that we may die with him.

11:17 venit itaque Iesus et invenit 17. Then when Jesus came, he found
eum quattuor dies iam in monumento that he had lain in the grave four days
habentem already.

11:18 erat autem Bethania iuxta 18. Now Bethany was nigh unto
Hierosolyma quasi stadiis quindecim Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

11:19 multi autem ex Iudaeis venerant 19. And many of the Jews came to
ad Martham et Mariam ut consolarentur Martha and Mary, to comfort them
eas de fratre suo concerning their brother.

11:20 Martha ergo ut audivit quia 20. Then Martha, as soon as she heard
Iesus venit occurrit illi Maria autem that Jesus was coming, went and met
domi sedebat him: but Mary sat still in the house.

11:21 dixit ergo Martha ad Iesum 21. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord,
Domine si fuisses hic frater meus non if thou hadst been here, my brother had
fuisset mortuus not died.

11:22 sed et nunc scio quia quaecumque 22. But I know, that even now,
poposceris a Deo dabit tibi Deus whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God
                                             will give it thee.

11:23 dicit illi Iesus resurget frater 23. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother
tuus shall rise again.

11:24 dicit ei Martha scio quia 24. Martha saith unto him, I know that
resurget in resurrectione in novissima he shall rise again in the resurrection
die at the last day.

11:25 dixit ei Iesus ego sum 25. Jesus said unto her, I am the
resurrectio et vita qui credit in me et resurrection, and the life: he that
si mortuus fuerit vivet believeth in me, though he were dead,
                                             yet shall he live:

11:26 et omnis qui vivit et credit in 26. And whosoever liveth and believeth
me non morietur in aeternum credis hoc in me shall never die. Believest thou
                                             this?

11:27 ait illi utique Domine ego 27. She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I
credidi quia tu es Christus Filius Dei believe that thou art the Christ, the
qui in mundum venisti Son of God, which should come into the
                                             world.

11:28 et cum haec dixisset abiit et 28. And when she had so said, she went
vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio her way, and called Mary her sister
dicens magister adest et vocat te secretly, saying, The Master is come,
                                             and calleth for thee.

11:29 illa ut audivit surgit cito et 29. As soon as she heard that, she
venit ad eum arose quickly, and came unto him.

11:30 nondum enim venerat Iesus in 30. Now Jesus was not yet come into
castellum sed erat adhuc in illo loco the town, but was in that place where
ubi occurrerat ei Martha Martha met him.

11:31 Iudaei igitur qui erant cum ea 31. The Jews then which were with her
in domo et consolabantur eam cum in the house, and comforted her, when
vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit et they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily
exiit secuti sunt eam dicentes quia and went out, followed her, saying, She
vadit ad monumentum ut ploret ibi goeth unto the grave to weep there.

11:32 Maria ergo cum venisset ubi erat 32. Then when Mary was come where
Iesus videns eum cecidit ad pedes eius Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down
et dixit ei Domine si fuisses hic non at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if
esset mortuus frater meus thou hadst been here, my brother had
                                             not died.

11:33 Iesus ergo ut vidit eam 33. When Jesus therefore saw her
plorantem et Iudaeos qui venerant cum weeping, and the Jews also weeping
ea plorantes fremuit spiritu et which came with her, he groaned in the
turbavit se ipsum spirit, and was troubled.

11:34 et dixit ubi posuistis eum 34. And said, Where have ye laid him?
dicunt ei Domine veni et vide They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

11:35 et lacrimatus est Iesus 35. Jesus wept.

11:36 dixerunt ergo Iudaei ecce 36. Then said the Jews, Behold how he
quomodo amabat eum loved him!

11:37 quidam autem dixerunt ex ipsis 37. And some of them said, Could not
non poterat hic qui aperuit oculos this man, which opened the eyes of the
caeci facere ut et hic non moreretur blind, have caused that even this man
                                             should not have died?

11:38 Iesus ergo rursum fremens in 38. Jesus therefore again groaning in
semet ipso venit ad monumentum erat himself cometh to the grave. It was a

11:39 ait Iesus tollite lapidem dicit 39. Jesus said, Take ye away the
ei Martha soror eius qui mortuus fuerat stone. Martha, the sister of him that
Domine iam fetet quadriduanus enim est was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this
time he stinketh: for he hath been dead
                                             four days.

11:40 dicit ei Iesus nonne dixi tibi 40. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not
quoniam si credideris videbis gloriam unto thee, that, if thou wouldest
Dei believe, thou shouldest see the glory
                                             of God?

11:41 tulerunt ergo lapidem Iesus 41. Then they took away the stone from
autem elevatis sursum oculis dixit the place where the dead was laid. And
Pater gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said,
me Father, I thank thee that thou hast
                                             heard me.

11:42 ego autem sciebam quia semper me 42. And I knew that thou hearest me
audis sed propter populum qui always: but because of the people which
circumstat dixi ut credant quia tu me stand by I said it, that they may
misisti believe that thou hast sent me.

11:43 haec cum dixisset voce magna 43. And when he thus had spoken, he
clamavit Lazare veni foras cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come
                                             forth.

11:44 et statim prodiit qui fuerat 44. And he that was dead came forth,
mortuus ligatus pedes et manus institis bound hand and foot with graveclothes:
et facies illius sudario erat ligata and his face was bound about with a
dicit Iesus eis solvite eum et sinite napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose
abire him, and let him go.

11:45 multi ergo ex Iudaeis qui 45. Then many of the Jews which came
venerant ad Mariam et viderant quae to Mary, and had seen the things which
fecit crediderunt in eum Jesus did, believed on him.

11:46 quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt 46. But some of them went their ways
ad Pharisaeos et dixerunt eis quae to the Pharisees, and told them what
fecit Iesus things Jesus had done.

11:47 collegerunt ergo pontifices et 47. Then gathered the chief priests
Pharisaei concilium et dicebant quid and the Pharisees a council, and said,
facimus quia hic homo multa signa facit What do we? for this man doeth many
                                             miracles.

11:48 si dimittimus eum sic omnes 48. If we let him thus alone, all men
credent in eum et venient Romani et will believe on him: and the Romans
tollent nostrum et locum et gentem shall come and take away both our place
                                             and nation.

11:49 unus autem ex ipsis Caiaphas cum 49. And one of them, named Caiaphas,
esset pontifex anni illius dixit eis being the high priest that same year,
vos nescitis quicquam said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

11:50 nec cogitatis quia expedit nobis 50. Nor consider that it is expedient
ut unus moriatur homo pro populo et non for us, that one man should die for the
tota gens pereat people, and that the whole nation
                                             perish not.

11:51 hoc autem a semet ipso non dixit 51. And this spake he not of himself:
sed cum esset pontifex anni illius but being high priest that year, he
prophetavit quia Iesus moriturus erat prophesied that Jesus should die for
pro gente                                    that nation;

11:52 et non tantum pro gente sed et 52. And not for that nation only, but
ut filios Dei qui erant dispersi that also he should gather together in
congregaret in unum one the children of God that were
                                             scattered abroad.

11:53 ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut 53. Then from that day forth they took
interficerent eum counsel together for to put him to
                                             death.

11:54 Iesus ergo iam non in palam 54. Jesus therefore walked no more
ambulabat apud Iudaeos sed abiit in openly among the Jews; but went thence
regionem iuxta desertum in civitatem unto a country near to the wilderness,
quae dicitur Efrem et ibi morabatur cum into a city called Ephraim, and there
discipulis continued with his disciples.

11:55 proximum autem erat pascha 55. And the Jews' passover was nigh at
Iudaeorum et ascenderunt multi hand: and many went out of the country
Hierosolyma de regione ante pascha ut up to Jerusalem before the passover, to
sanctificarent se ipsos purify themselves.

11:56 quaerebant ergo Iesum et 56. Then sought they for Jesus, and
conloquebantur ad invicem in templo spake among themselves, as they stood
stantes quid putatis quia non veniat ad in the temple, What think ye, that he
diem festum will not come to the feast?

11:57 dederant autem pontifices et 57. Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisaei mandatum ut si quis Pharisees had given a commandment,
cognoverit ubi sit indicet ut that, if any man knew where he were, he
adprehendant eum should shew it, that they might take
                                             him.
