When Jesus had spoken these words, est cum discipulis suis trans torrentem he went forth with his disciples over Cedron ubi erat hortus in quem the brook Cedron, where was a garden, introivit ipse et discipuli eius into the which he entered, and his disciples. 18:2 sciebat autem et Iudas qui 2. And Judas also, which betrayed him, tradebat eum ipsum locum quia knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes frequenter Iesus convenerat illuc cum resorted thither with his disciples. discipulis suis 18:3 Iudas ergo cum accepisset 3. Judas then, having received a band cohortem et a pontificibus et of men and officers from the chief Pharisaeis ministros venit illuc cum priests and Pharisees, cometh thither lanternis et facibus et armis with lanterns and torches and weapons. 18:4 Iesus itaque sciens omnia quae 4. Jesus therefore, knowing all things ventura erant super eum processit et that should come upon him, went forth, dicit eis quem quaeritis and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 18:5 responderunt ei Iesum Nazarenum 5. They answered him, Jesus of dicit eis Iesus ego sum stabat autem et Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am Iudas qui tradebat eum cum ipsis he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 18:6 ut ergo dixit eis ego sum 6. As soon then as he had said unto abierunt retrorsum et ceciderunt in them, I am he, they went backward, and terram fell to the ground. 18:7 iterum ergo eos interrogavit quem 7. Then asked he them again, Whom seek quaeritis illi autem dixerunt Iesum ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Nazarenum 18:8 respondit Iesus dixi vobis quia 8. Jesus answered, I have told you ego sum si ergo me quaeritis sinite hos that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, abire let these go their way: 18:9 ut impleretur sermo quem dixit 9. That the saying might be fulfilled, quia quos dedisti mihi non perdidi ex which he spake, Of them which thou ipsis quemquam gavest me have I lost none. 18:10 Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium 10. Then Simon Peter having a sword eduxit eum et percussit pontificis drew it, and smote the high priest's servum et abscidit eius auriculam servant, and cut off his right ear. The dextram erat autem nomen servo Malchus servant's name was Malchus. 18:11 dixit ergo Iesus Petro mitte 11. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up gladium in vaginam calicem quem dedit thy sword into the sheath: the cup mihi Pater non bibam illum which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? 18:12 cohors ergo et tribunus et 12. Then the band and the captain and ministri Iudaeorum conprehenderunt officers of the Jews took Jesus, and Iesum et ligaverunt eum bound him, 18:13 et adduxerunt eum ad Annam 13. And led him away to Annas first; primum erat enim socer Caiaphae qui for he was father in law to Caiaphas, erat pontifex anni illius which was the high priest that same year. 18:14 erat autem Caiaphas qui 14. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave consilium dederat Iudaeis quia expedit counsel to the Jews, that it was unum hominem mori pro populo expedient that one man should die for the people. 18:15 sequebatur autem Iesum Simon 15. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, Petrus et alius discipulus discipulus and so did another disciple: that autem ille erat notus pontifici et disciple was known unto the high introivit cum Iesu in atrium pontificis priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 18:16 Petrus autem stabat ad ostium 16. But Peter stood at the door foris exivit ergo discipulus alius qui without. Then went out that other erat notus pontifici et dixit ostiariae disciple, which was known unto the high et introduxit Petrum priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. 18:17 dicit ergo Petro ancilla 17. Then saith the damsel that kept ostiaria numquid et tu ex discipulis es the door unto Peter, Art not thou also hominis istius dicit ille non sum one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. 18:18 stabant autem servi et ministri 18. And the servants and officers ad prunas quia frigus erat et stood there, who had made a fire of calefiebant erat autem cum eis et coals; for it was cold: and they warmed Petrus stans et calefaciens se themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. 18:19 pontifex ergo interrogavit Iesum 19. The high priest then asked Jesus de discipulis suis et de doctrina eius of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 18:20 respondit ei Iesus ego palam 20. Jesus answered him, I spake openly locutus sum mundo ego semper docui in to the world; I ever taught in the synagoga et in templo quo omnes Iudaei synagogue, and in the temple, whither conveniunt et in occulto locutus sum the Jews always resort; and in secret nihil have I said nothing. 18:21 quid me interrogas interroga eos 21. Why askest thou me? ask them which qui audierunt quid locutus sum ipsis heard me, what I have said unto them: ecce hii sciunt quae dixerim ego behold, they know what I said. 18:22 haec autem cum dixisset unus 22. And when he had thus spoken, one adsistens ministrorum dedit alapam Iesu of the officers which stood by struck dicens sic respondes pontifici Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 18:23 respondit ei Iesus si male 23. Jesus answered him, If I have locutus sum testimonium perhibe de malo spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: si autem bene quid me caedis but if well, why smitest thou me? 18:24 et misit eum Annas ligatum ad 24. Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphan pontificem Caiaphas the high priest. 18:25 erat autem Simon Petrus stans et 25. And Simon Peter stood and warmed calefaciens se dixerunt ergo ei numquid himself. They said therefore unto him, et tu ex discipulis eius es negavit Art not thou also one of his disciples? ille et dixit non sum He denied it, and said, I am not. 18:26 dicit unus ex servis pontificis 26. One of the servants of the high cognatus eius cuius abscidit Petrus priest, being his kinsman whose ear auriculam nonne ego te vidi in horto Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see cum illo thee in the garden with him? 18:27 iterum ergo negavit Petrus et 27. Peter then denied again: and statim gallus cantavit immediately the cock crew. 18:28 adducunt ergo Iesum a Caiapha in 28. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas praetorium erat autem mane et ipsi non unto the hall of judgment: and it was introierunt in praetorium ut non early; and they themselves went not contaminarentur sed manducarent pascha into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 18:29 exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras 29. Pilate then went out unto them, et dixit quam accusationem adfertis and said, What accusation bring ye adversus hominem hunc against this man? 18:30 responderunt et dixerunt ei si 30. They answered and said unto him, non esset hic malefactor non tibi If he were not a malefactor, we would tradidissemus eum not have delivered him up unto thee. 18:31 dixit ergo eis Pilatus accipite 31. Then said Pilate unto them, Take eum vos et secundum legem vestram ye him, and judge him according to your iudicate eum dixerunt ergo ei Iudaei law. The Jews therefore said unto him, nobis non licet interficere quemquam It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: 18:32 ut sermo Iesu impleretur quem 32. That the saying of Jesus might be dixit significans qua esset morte fulfilled, which he spake, signifying moriturus what death he should die. 18:33 introivit ergo iterum in 33. Then Pilate entered into the praetorium Pilatus et vocavit Iesum et judgment hall again, and called Jesus, dixit ei tu es rex Iudaeorum and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 18:34 et respondit Iesus a temet ipso 34. Jesus answered him, Sayest thou hoc dicis an alii tibi dixerunt de me this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 18:35 respondit Pilatus numquid ego 35. Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine Iudaeus sum gens tua et pontifices own nation and the chief priests have tradiderunt te mihi quid fecisti delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 18:36 respondit Iesus regnum meum non 36. Jesus answered, My kingdom is not est de mundo hoc si ex hoc mundo esset of this world: if my kingdom were of regnum meum ministri mei decertarent ut this world, then would my servants non traderer Iudaeis nunc autem meum fight, that I should not be delivered regnum non est hinc to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 18:37 dixit itaque ei Pilatus ergo rex 37. Pilate therefore said unto him, es tu respondit Iesus tu dicis quia rex Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, sum ego ego in hoc natus sum et ad hoc Thou sayest that I am a king. To this veni in mundum ut testimonium perhibeam end was I born, and for this cause came veritati omnis qui est ex veritate I into the world, that I should bear audit meam vocem witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 18:38 dicit ei Pilatus quid est 38. Pilate saith unto him, What is veritas et cum hoc dixisset iterum truth? And when he had said this, he exivit ad Iudaeos et dicit eis ego went out again unto the Jews, and saith nullam invenio in eo causam unto them, I find in him no fault at all. 18:39 est autem consuetudo vobis ut 39. But ye have a custom, that I unum dimittam vobis in pascha vultis should release unto you one at the ergo dimittam vobis regem Iudaeorum passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 18:40 clamaverunt rursum omnes 40. Then cried they all again, saying, dicentes non hunc sed Barabban erat Not this man, but Barabbas.
