18:1 haec cum dixisset Iesus egressus 1. When Jesus had spoken these words,
est cum discipulis suis trans torrentem he went forth with his disciples over
Cedron ubi erat hortus in quem the brook Cedron, where was a garden,

18:2 sciebat autem et Iudas qui 2. And Judas also, which betrayed him,
tradebat eum ipsum locum quia knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes
frequenter Iesus convenerat illuc cum resorted thither with his disciples.

18:3 Iudas ergo cum accepisset 3. Judas then, having received a band
cohortem et a pontificibus et of men and officers from the chief
Pharisaeis ministros venit illuc cum priests and Pharisees, cometh thither
lanternis et facibus et armis with lanterns and torches and weapons.

18:4 Iesus itaque sciens omnia quae 4. Jesus therefore, knowing all things
ventura erant super eum processit et that should come upon him, went forth,
dicit eis quem quaeritis and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

18:5 responderunt ei Iesum Nazarenum 5. They answered him, Jesus of

Iudas qui tradebat eum cum ipsis he. And Judas also, which betrayed him,
                                             stood with them.

18:6 ut ergo dixit eis ego sum 6. As soon then as he had said unto

terram fell to the ground.

18:7 iterum ergo eos interrogavit quem 7. Then asked he them again, Whom seek

18:8 respondit Iesus dixi vobis quia 8. Jesus answered, I have told you
ego sum si ergo me quaeritis sinite hos that I am he: if therefore ye seek me,
abire let these go their way:

18:9 ut impleretur sermo quem dixit 9. That the saying might be fulfilled,
quia quos dedisti mihi non perdidi ex which he spake, Of them which thou
ipsis quemquam gavest me have I lost none.

18:10 Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium 10. Then Simon Peter having a sword
eduxit eum et percussit pontificis drew it, and smote the high priest's
servum et abscidit eius auriculam servant, and cut off his right ear. The
dextram erat autem nomen servo Malchus servant's name was Malchus.

18:11 dixit ergo Iesus Petro mitte 11. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up
gladium in vaginam calicem quem dedit thy sword into the sheath: the cup
mihi Pater non bibam illum which my Father hath given me, shall I
                                             not drink it?

18:12 cohors ergo et tribunus et 12. Then the band and the captain and
ministri Iudaeorum conprehenderunt officers of the Jews took Jesus, and
Iesum et ligaverunt eum bound him,

18:13  et adduxerunt eum ad Annam            13.  And led him away to Annas first;
primum erat enim socer Caiaphae qui for he was father in law to Caiaphas,
erat pontifex anni illius which was the high priest that same
                                             year.

18:14 erat autem Caiaphas qui 14. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave
consilium dederat Iudaeis quia expedit counsel to the Jews, that it was
unum hominem mori pro populo expedient that one man should die for
                                             the people.

18:15 sequebatur autem Iesum Simon 15. And Simon Peter followed Jesus,
Petrus et alius discipulus discipulus and so did another disciple: that
autem ille erat notus pontifici et disciple was known unto the high

                                             palace of the high priest.

18:16 Petrus autem stabat ad ostium 16. But Peter stood at the door
foris exivit ergo discipulus alius qui without. Then went out that other
erat notus pontifici et dixit ostiariae disciple, which was known unto the high
et introduxit Petrum priest, and spake unto her that kept
the door, and brought in Peter.

18:17 dicit ergo Petro ancilla 17. Then saith the damsel that kept
ostiaria numquid et tu ex discipulis es the door unto Peter, Art not thou also

                                             I am not.

18:18 stabant autem servi et ministri 18. And the servants and officers

Petrus stans et calefaciens se themselves: and Peter stood with them,
                                             and warmed himself.

18:19 pontifex ergo interrogavit Iesum 19. The high priest then asked Jesus
de discipulis suis et de doctrina eius of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

18:20 respondit ei Iesus ego palam 20. Jesus answered him, I spake openly
locutus sum mundo ego semper docui in to the world; I ever taught in the
synagoga et in templo quo omnes Iudaei synagogue, and in the temple, whither
conveniunt et in occulto locutus sum the Jews always resort; and in secret
nihil have I said nothing.

18:21 quid me interrogas interroga eos 21. Why askest thou me? ask them which
qui audierunt quid locutus sum ipsis heard me, what I have said unto them:
ecce hii sciunt quae dixerim ego behold, they know what I said.

18:22 haec autem cum dixisset unus 22. And when he had thus spoken, one
adsistens ministrorum dedit alapam Iesu of the officers which stood by struck
dicens sic respondes pontifici Jesus with the palm of his hand,
saying, Answerest thou the high priest
                                             so?

18:23 respondit ei Iesus si male 23. Jesus answered him, If I have
locutus sum testimonium perhibe de malo spoken evil, bear witness of the evil:
si autem bene quid me caedis but if well, why smitest thou me?

18:24 et misit eum Annas ligatum ad 24. Now Annas had sent him bound unto
Caiaphan pontificem Caiaphas the high priest.

18:25 erat autem Simon Petrus stans et 25. And Simon Peter stood and warmed
calefaciens se dixerunt ergo ei numquid himself. They said therefore unto him,
et tu ex discipulis eius es negavit Art not thou also one of his disciples?
ille et dixit non sum He denied it, and said, I am not.

18:26 dicit unus ex servis pontificis 26. One of the servants of the high
cognatus eius cuius abscidit Petrus priest, being his kinsman whose ear
auriculam nonne ego te vidi in horto Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see
cum illo thee in the garden with him?

18:27 iterum ergo negavit Petrus et 27. Peter then denied again: and
statim gallus cantavit immediately the cock crew.

18:28 adducunt ergo Iesum a Caiapha in 28. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas
praetorium erat autem mane et ipsi non unto the hall of judgment: and it was

contaminarentur sed manducarent pascha into the judgment hall, lest they
should be defiled; but that they might
                                             eat the passover.

18:29 exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras 29. Pilate then went out unto them,
et dixit quam accusationem adfertis and said, What accusation bring ye
adversus hominem hunc against this man?

18:30 responderunt et dixerunt ei si 30. They answered and said unto him,
non esset hic malefactor non tibi If he were not a malefactor, we would
tradidissemus eum not have delivered him up unto thee.

18:31 dixit ergo eis Pilatus accipite 31. Then said Pilate unto them, Take
eum vos et secundum legem vestram ye him, and judge him according to your
iudicate eum dixerunt ergo ei Iudaei law. The Jews therefore said unto him,
nobis non licet interficere quemquam It is not lawful for us to put any man
                                             to death:

18:32 ut sermo Iesu impleretur quem 32. That the saying of Jesus might be

moriturus what death he should die.

18:33 introivit ergo iterum in 33. Then Pilate entered into the
praetorium Pilatus et vocavit Iesum et judgment hall again, and called Jesus,
dixit ei tu es rex Iudaeorum and said unto him, Art thou the King of
                                             the Jews?

18:34 et respondit Iesus a temet ipso 34. Jesus answered him, Sayest thou
hoc dicis an alii tibi dixerunt de me this thing of thyself, or did others
                                             tell it thee of me?

18:35 respondit Pilatus numquid ego 35. Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine
Iudaeus sum gens tua et pontifices own nation and the chief priests have
tradiderunt te mihi quid fecisti delivered thee unto me: what hast thou
                                             done?

18:36 respondit Iesus regnum meum non 36. Jesus answered, My kingdom is not
est de mundo hoc si ex hoc mundo esset of this world: if my kingdom were of
regnum meum ministri mei decertarent ut this world, then would my servants
non traderer Iudaeis nunc autem meum fight, that I should not be delivered
regnum non est hinc to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not
                                             from hence.

18:37 dixit itaque ei Pilatus ergo rex 37. Pilate therefore said unto him,
es tu respondit Iesus tu dicis quia rex Art thou a king then? Jesus answered,
sum ego ego in hoc natus sum et ad hoc Thou sayest that I am a king. To this
veni in mundum ut testimonium perhibeam end was I born, and for this cause came
veritati omnis qui est ex veritate I into the world, that I should bear

is of the truth heareth my voice.

18:38 dicit ei Pilatus quid est 38. Pilate saith unto him, What is
veritas et cum hoc dixisset iterum truth? And when he had said this, he
exivit ad Iudaeos et dicit eis ego went out again unto the Jews, and saith
nullam invenio in eo causam unto them, I find in him no fault at
                                             all.

18:39 est autem consuetudo vobis ut 39. But ye have a custom, that I

release unto you the King of the Jews?

18:40 clamaverunt rursum omnes 40. Then cried they all again, saying,
dicentes non hunc sed Barabban erat Not this man, but Barabbas. Now
autem Barabbas latro Barabbas was a robber.
