19:1 tunc ergo adprehendit Pilatus 1. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus,
Iesum et flagellavit and scourged him.

19:2 et milites plectentes coronam de 2. And the soldiers platted a crown of
spinis inposuerunt capiti eius et veste thorns, and put it on his head, and
purpurea circumdederunt eum they put on him a purple robe,

19:3 et veniebant ad eum et dicebant 3. And said, Hail, King of the Jews!
have rex Iudaeorum et dabant ei alapas and they smote him with their hands.

19:4 exiit iterum Pilatus foras et 4. Pilate therefore went forth again,
dicit eis ecce adduco vobis eum foras and saith unto them, Behold, I bring
him forth to you, that ye may know that
I find no fault in him.

19:5 ut cognoscatis quia in eo nullam 5. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the
causam invenio et purpureum vestimentum crown of thorns, and the purple robe.
et dicit eis ecce homo And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the
                                             man!

19:6 cum ergo vidissent eum pontifices 6. When the chief priests therefore
et ministri clamabant dicentes and officers saw him, they cried out,
crucifige crucifige dicit eis Pilatus saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
accipite eum vos et crucifigite ego Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him,
enim non invenio in eo causam and crucify him: for I find no fault in
                                             him.

19:7 responderunt ei Iudaei nos legem 7. The Jews answered him, We have a

quia Filium Dei se fecit because he made himself the Son of God.

19:8 cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc 8. When Pilate therefore heard that
sermonem magis timuit                        saying, he was the more afraid;

19:9 et ingressus est praetorium 9. And went again into the judgment
iterum et dicit ad Iesum unde es tu hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art

19:10 dicit ergo ei Pilatus mihi non 10. Then saith Pilate unto him,
loqueris nescis quia potestatem habeo Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou
crucifigere te et potestatem habeo not that I have power to crucify thee,
dimittere te and have power to release thee?

19:11 respondit Iesus non haberes 11. Jesus answered, Thou couldest have
potestatem adversum me ullam nisi tibi no power at all against me, except it
esset datum desuper propterea qui were given thee from above: therefore

                                             greater sin.

19:12 exinde quaerebat Pilatus 12. And from thenceforth Pilate sought
dimittere eum Iudaei autem clamabant to release him: but the Jews cried out,
dicentes si hunc dimittis non es amicus saying, If thou let this man go, thou
Caesaris omnis qui se regem facit art not Caesar's friend: whosoever
contradicit Caesari maketh himself a king speaketh against
                                             Caesar.

19:13 Pilatus ergo cum audisset hos 13. When Pilate therefore heard that
sermones adduxit foras Iesum et sedit saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat

19:14 erat autem parasceve paschae 14. And it was the preparation of the
hora quasi sexta et dicit Iudaeis ecce passover, and about the sixth hour: and

19:15 illi autem clamabant tolle tolle 15. But they cried out, Away with him,
crucifige eum dixit eis Pilatus regem away with him, crucify him. Pilate
vestrum crucifigam responderunt saith unto them, Shall I crucify your
pontifices non habemus regem nisi King? The chief priests answered, We
Caesarem have no king but Caesar.

19:16 tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut 16. Then delivered he him therefore
crucifigeretur susceperunt autem Iesum unto them to be crucified. And they
et eduxerunt took Jesus, and led him away.

19:17 et baiulans sibi crucem exivit 17. And he bearing his cross went
in eum qui dicitur Calvariae locum forth into a place called the place of

19:19 scripsit autem et titulum 19. And Pilate wrote a title, and put

19:20 hunc ergo titulum multi legerunt 20. This title then read many of the
Iudaeorum quia prope civitatem erat Jews: for the place where Jesus was
locus ubi crucifixus est Iesus et erat crucified was nigh to the city: and it
scriptum hebraice graece et latine was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and
                                             Latin.

19:21 dicebant ergo Pilato pontifices 21. Then said the chief priests of the

                                             of the Jews.

19:22 respondit Pilatus quod scripsi 22. Pilate answered, What I have
scripsi written I have written.

19:23 milites ergo cum crucifixissent 23. Then the soldiers, when they had
eum acceperunt vestimenta eius et crucified Jesus, took his garments, and
fecerunt quattuor partes unicuique made four parts, to every soldier a
militi partem et tunicam erat autem part; and also his coat: now the coat
tunica inconsutilis desuper contexta was without seam, woven from the top
per totum throughout.

19:24 dixerunt ergo ad invicem non 24. They said therefore among

partiti sunt vestimenta mea sibi et in that the scripture might be fulfilled,
vestem meam miserunt sortem et milites which saith, They parted my raiment
quidem haec fecerunt among them, and for my vesture they did
cast lots. These things therefore the
                                             soldiers did.

19:25 stabant autem iuxta crucem Iesu 25. Now there stood by the cross of
mater eius et soror matris eius Maria Jesus his mother, and his mother's
Cleopae et Maria Magdalene sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and
                                             Mary Magdalene.

19:26 cum vidisset ergo Iesus matrem 26. When Jesus therefore saw his
et discipulum stantem quem diligebat mother, and the disciple standing by,
dicit matri suae mulier ecce filius tuus whom he loved, he saith unto his
                                             mother, Woman, behold thy son!

19:27 deinde dicit discipulo ecce 27. Then saith he to the disciple,
mater tua et ex illa hora accepit eam Behold thy mother! And from that hour
discipulus in sua that disciple took her unto his own
                                             home.

19:28 postea sciens Iesus quia iam 28. After this, Jesus knowing that all
omnia consummata sunt ut consummaretur things were now accomplished, that the
scriptura dicit sitio scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I
                                             thirst.

19:29 vas ergo positum erat aceto 29. Now there was set a vessel full of
plenum illi autem spongiam plenam aceto vinegar: and they filled a spunge with
hysopo circumponentes obtulerunt ori vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and
eius put it to his mouth.

19:30 cum ergo accepisset Iesus acetum 30. When Jesus therefore had received
dixit consummatum est et inclinato the vinegar, he said, It is finished:
capite tradidit spiritum and he bowed his head, and gave up the

19:31 Iudaei ergo quoniam parasceve 31. The Jews therefore, because it was

                                             they might be taken away.

19:36 facta sunt enim haec ut 36. For these things were done, that

19:37 et iterum alia scriptura dicit 37. And again another scripture saith,

                                             pierced.

19:38 post haec autem rogavit Pilatum 38. And after this Joseph of

                                             body of Jesus.

19:39 venit autem et Nicodemus qui 39. And there came also Nicodemus,

19:40 acceperunt ergo corpus Iesu et 40. Then took they the body of Jesus,

19:41 erat autem in loco ubi 41. Now in the place where he was
