16:1 haec locutus sum vobis ut non 1. These things have I spoken unto
scandalizemini you, that ye should not be offended.

16:2 absque synagogis facient vos sed 2. They shall put you out of the
venit hora ut omnis qui interficit vos synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that
arbitretur obsequium se praestare Deo whosoever killeth you will think that
                                             he doeth God service.

16:3 et haec facient quia non noverunt 3. And these things will they do unto
Patrem neque me you, because they have not known the
                                             Father, nor me.

16:4 sed haec locutus sum vobis ut cum 4. But these things have I told you,
venerit hora eorum reminiscamini quia that when the time shall come, ye may
ego dixi vobis remember that I told you of them. And
these things I said not unto you at the
beginning, because I was with you.

16:5 haec autem vobis ab initio non 5. But now I go my way to him that
dixi quia vobiscum eram at nunc vado ad sent me; and none of you asketh me,
eum qui me misit et nemo ex vobis Whither goest thou?
interrogat me quo vadis

16:6 sed quia haec locutus sum vobis 6. But because I have said these
tristitia implevit cor vestrum things unto you, sorrow hath filled
                                             your heart.

16:7  sed ego veritatem dico vobis           7.  Nevertheless I tell you the truth;
expedit vobis ut ego vadam si enim non It is expedient for you that I go away:
abiero paracletus non veniet ad vos si for if I go not away, the Comforter
autem abiero mittam eum ad vos will not come unto you; but if I
depart, I will send him unto you.

16:8 et cum venerit ille arguet mundum 8. And when he is come, he will
de peccato et de iustitia et de iudicio reprove the world of sin, and of
                                             righteousness, and of judgment:

16:9 de peccato quidem quia non 9. Of sin, because they believe not on
credunt in me                                me;

16:10 de iustitia vero quia ad Patrem 10. Of righteousness, because I go to
vado et iam non videbitis me                 my Father, and ye see me no more;

16:11 de iudicio autem quia princeps 11. Of judgment, because the prince of
mundi huius iudicatus est this world is judged.

16:12 adhuc multa habeo vobis dicere 12. I have yet many things to say unto
sed non potestis portare modo you, but ye cannot bear them now.

16:13 cum autem venerit ille Spiritus 13. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of
veritatis docebit vos in omnem truth, is come, he will guide you into
veritatem non enim loquetur a semet all truth: for he shall not speak of
ipso sed quaecumque audiet loquetur et himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,
quae ventura sunt adnuntiabit vobis that shall he speak: and he will shew
                                             you things to come.

16:14 ille me clarificabit quia de meo 14. He shall glorify me: for he shall
accipiet et adnuntiabit vobis receive of mine, and shall shew it unto
                                             you.

16:15 omnia quaecumque habet Pater mea 15. All things that the Father hath
sunt propterea dixi quia de meo accipit are mine: therefore said I, that he
et adnuntiabit vobis shall take of mine, and shall shew it
                                             unto you.

16:16 modicum et iam non videbitis me 16. A little while, and ye shall not
et iterum modicum et videbitis me quia see me: and again, a little while, and
vado ad Patrem ye shall see me, because I go to the
                                             Father.

16:17 dixerunt ergo ex discipulis eius 17. Then said some of his disciples
ad invicem quid est hoc quod dicit among themselves, What is this that he
nobis modicum et non videbitis me et saith unto us, A little while, and ye
iterum modicum et videbitis me et quia shall not see me: and again, a little
vado ad Patrem while, and ye shall see me: and,
Because I go to the Father?

16:18 dicebant ergo quid est hoc quod 18. They said therefore, What is this
dicit modicum nescimus quid loquitur that he saith, A little while? we
                                             cannot tell what he saith.

16:19 cognovit autem Iesus quia 19. Now Jesus knew that they were
volebant eum interrogare et dixit eis desirous to ask him, and said unto
de hoc quaeritis inter vos quia dixi them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of
modicum et non videbitis me et iterum that I said, A little while, and ye
modicum et videbitis me shall not see me: and again, a little
while, and ye shall see me?

16:20 amen amen dico vobis quia 20. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
plorabitis et flebitis vos mundus autem That ye shall weep and lament, but the
gaudebit vos autem contristabimini sed world shall rejoice: and ye shall be
tristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be
                                             turned into joy.

16:21 mulier cum parit tristitiam 21. A woman when she is in travail
habet quia venit hora eius cum autem hath sorrow, because her hour is come:
pepererit puerum iam non meminit but as soon as she is delivered of the
pressurae propter gaudium quia natus child, she remembereth no more the
est homo in mundum anguish, for joy that a man is born
                                             into the world.

16:22 et vos igitur nunc quidem 22. And ye now therefore have sorrow:
tristitiam habetis iterum autem videbo but I will see you again, and your
vos et gaudebit cor vestrum et gaudium heart shall rejoice, and your joy no
vestrum nemo tollit a vobis man taketh from you.

16:23 et in illo die me non rogabitis 23. And in that day ye shall ask me
quicquam amen amen dico vobis si quid nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto
petieritis Patrem in nomine meo dabit you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father
vobis in my name, he will give it you.

16:24 usque modo non petistis quicquam 24. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in
in nomine meo petite et accipietis ut my name: ask, and ye shall receive,
gaudium vestrum sit plenum that your joy may be full.

16:25 haec in proverbiis locutus sum 25. These things have I spoken unto
vobis venit hora cum iam non in you in proverbs: but the time cometh,
proverbiis loquar vobis sed palam de when I shall no more speak unto you in
Patre adnuntiabo vobis proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly
                                             of the Father.

16:26 illo die in nomine meo petetis 26. At that day ye shall ask in my
et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo name: and I say not unto you, that I
Patrem de vobis will pray the Father for you:

16:27 ipse enim Pater amat vos quia 27. For the Father himself loveth you,
vos me amastis et credidistis quia ego because ye have loved me, and have
a Deo exivi believed that I came out from God.

16:28 exivi a Patre et veni in mundum 28. I came forth from the Father, and
iterum relinquo mundum et vado ad Patrem am come into the world: again, I leave
the world, and go to the Father.

16:29 dicunt ei discipuli eius ecce 29. His disciples said unto him, Lo,
nunc palam loqueris et proverbium now speakest thou plainly, and speakest
nullum dicis no proverb.

16:30 nunc scimus quia scis omnia et 30. Now are we sure that thou knowest
non opus est tibi ut quis te interroget all things, and needest not that any
in hoc credimus quia a Deo existi man should ask thee: by this we believe
that thou camest forth from God.

16:31 respondit eis Iesus modo creditis 31. Jesus answered them, Do ye now
                                             believe?

16:32 ecce venit hora et iam venit ut 32. Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is
dispergamini unusquisque in propria et now come, that ye shall be scattered,
me solum relinquatis et non sum solus every man to his own, and shall leave
quia Pater mecum est me alone: and yet I am not alone,
because the Father is with me.

16:33 haec locutus sum vobis ut in me 33. These things I have spoken unto
pacem habeatis in mundo pressuram you, that in me ye might have peace. In
habetis sed confidite ego vici mundum the world ye shall have tribulation:
but be of good cheer; I have overcome
                                             the world.
