12:1 Iesus ergo ante sex dies paschae 1. Then Jesus six days before the
venit Bethaniam ubi fuerat Lazarus passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus
mortuus quem suscitavit Iesus was, which had been dead, whom he
                                             raised from the dead.

12:2 fecerunt autem ei cenam ibi et 2. There they made him a supper; and
Martha ministrabat Lazarus vero unus Martha served: but Lazarus was one of
erat ex discumbentibus cum eo them that sat at the table with him.

12:3 Maria ergo accepit libram 3. Then took Mary a pound of ointment
unguenti nardi pistici pretiosi unxit of spikenard, very costly, and anointed
pedes Iesu et extersit capillis suis the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet
pedes eius et domus impleta est ex with her hair: and the house was filled
odore unguenti with the odour of the ointment.

12:4 dicit ergo unus ex discipulis 4. Then saith one of his disciples,
eius Iudas Scariotis qui erat eum Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which
traditurus should betray him,

12:5 quare hoc unguentum non veniit 5. Why was not this ointment sold for
trecentis denariis et datum est egenis three hundred pence, and given to the
                                             poor?

12:6 dixit autem hoc non quia de 6. This he said, not that he cared for
egenis pertinebat ad eum sed quia fur the poor; but because he was a thief,
erat et loculos habens ea quae and had the bag, and bare what was put
mittebantur portabat therein.

12:7 dixit ergo Iesus sine illam ut in 7. Then said Jesus, Let her alone:
die sepulturae meae servet illud against the day of my burying hath she
                                             kept this.

12:8 pauperes enim semper habetis 8. For the poor always ye have with
vobiscum me autem non semper habetis you; but me ye have not always.

12:9 cognovit ergo turba multa ex 9. Much people of the Jews therefore
Iudaeis quia illic est et venerunt non knew that he was there: and they came
propter Iesum tantum sed ut Lazarum not for Jesus' sake only, but that they
viderent quem suscitavit a mortuis might see Lazarus also, whom he had
                                             raised from the dead.

12:10 cogitaverunt autem principes 10. But the chief priests consulted
sacerdotum ut et Lazarum interficerent that they might put Lazarus also to
                                             death;

12:11 quia multi propter illum abibant 11. Because that by reason of him many
ex Iudaeis et credebant in Iesum of the Jews went away, and believed on
                                             Jesus.

12:12 in crastinum autem turba multa 12. On the next day much people that
quae venerat ad diem festum cum were come to the feast, when they heard
audissent quia venit Iesus Hierosolyma that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

12:13 acceperunt ramos palmarum et 13. Took branches of palm trees, and
processerunt obviam ei et clamabant went forth to meet him, and cried,
osanna benedictus qui venit in nomine Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel
Domini rex Israhel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

12:14 et invenit Iesus asellum et 14. And Jesus, when he had found a
sedit super eum sicut scriptum est young ass, sat thereon; as it is
                                             written,

12:15 noli timere filia Sion ecce rex 15. Fear not, daughter of Sion:
tuus venit sedens super pullum asinae behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an
                                             ass's colt.

12:16 haec non cognoverunt discipuli 16. These things understood not his
eius primum sed quando glorificatus est disciples at the first: but when Jesus
Iesus tunc recordati sunt quia haec was glorified, then remembered they
erant scripta de eo et haec fecerunt ei that these things were written of him,
and that they had done these things
                                             unto him.

12:17 testimonium ergo perhibebat 17. The people therefore that was with
turba quae erat cum eo quando Lazarum him when he called Lazarus out of his
vocavit de monumento et suscitavit eum grave, and raised him from the dead,
a mortuis bare record.

12:18 propterea et obviam venit ei 18. For this cause the people also met
turba quia audierunt eum fecisse hoc him, for that they heard that he had
signum done this miracle.

12:19 Pharisaei ergo dixerunt ad semet 19. The Pharisees therefore said among
ipsos videtis quia nihil proficimus themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail
ecce mundus totus post eum abiit nothing? behold, the world is gone
                                             after him.

12:20 erant autem gentiles quidam ex 20. And there were certain Greeks
his qui ascenderant ut adorarent in die among them that came up to worship at
festo the feast:

12:21 hii ergo accesserunt ad 21. The same came therefore to Philip,
Philippum qui erat a Bethsaida which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and
Galilaeae et rogabant eum dicentes desired him, saying, Sir, we would see
domine volumus Iesum videre Jesus.

12:22 venit Philippus et dicit Andreae 22. Philip cometh and telleth Andrew:
Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Iesu

12:23 Iesus autem respondit eis dicens 23. And Jesus answered them, saying,
venit hora ut clarificetur Filius The hour is come, that the Son of man
hominis should be glorified.

12:24 amen amen dico vobis nisi granum 24. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
frumenti cadens in terram mortuum fuerit Except a corn of wheat fall into the
ground and die, it abideth alone: but
if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

12:25 ipsum solum manet si autem 25. He that loveth his life shall lose
mortuum fuerit multum fructum adfert it; and he that hateth his life in this
qui amat animam suam perdet eam et qui world shall keep it unto life eternal.
odit animam suam in hoc mundo in vitam
aeternam custodit eam

12:26 si quis mihi ministrat me 26. If any man serve me, let him
sequatur et ubi sum ego illic et follow me; and where I am, there shall
minister meus erit si quis mihi also my servant be: if any man serve
ministraverit honorificabit eum Pater me, him will my Father honour.
meus

12:27 nunc anima mea turbata est et 27. Now is my soul troubled; and what
quid dicam Pater salvifica me ex hora shall I say? Father, save me from this
hac sed propterea veni in horam hanc hour: but for this cause came I unto
                                             this hour.

12:28 Pater clarifica tuum nomen venit 28. Father, glorify thy name. Then
ergo vox de caelo et clarificavi et came there a voice from heaven, saying,
iterum clarificabo I have both glorified it, and will
                                             glorify it again.

12:29 turba ergo quae stabat et 29. The people therefore, that stood
audierat dicebant tonitruum factum esse by, and heard it, said that it
alii dicebant angelus ei locutus est thundered: others said, An angel spake
                                             to him.

12:30 respondit Iesus et dixit non 30. Jesus answered and said, This
propter me vox haec venit sed propter voice came not because of me, but for
vos your sakes.

12:31 nunc iudicium est mundi nunc 31. Now is the judgment of this world:
princeps huius mundi eicietur foras now shall the prince of this world be
                                             cast out.

12:32 et ego si exaltatus fuero a 32. And I, if I be lifted up from the
terra omnia traham ad me ipsum earth, will draw all men unto me.

12:33 hoc autem dicebat significans 33. This he said, signifying what
qua morte esset moriturus death he should die.

12:34 respondit ei turba nos audivimus 34. The people answered him, We have
ex lege quia Christus manet in aeternum heard out of the law that Christ
et quomodo tu dicis oportet exaltari abideth for ever: and how sayest thou,
Filium hominis quis est iste Filius The Son of man must be lifted up? who
hominis is this Son of man?

12:35 dixit ergo eis Iesus adhuc 35. Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a
modicum lumen in vobis est ambulate dum little while is the light with you.
lucem habetis ut non tenebrae vos Walk while ye have the light, lest
conprehendant et qui ambulat in darkness come upon you: for he that
tenebris nescit quo vadat walketh in darkness knoweth not whither
                                             he goeth.

12:36 dum lucem habetis credite in 36. While ye have light, believe in
lucem ut filii lucis sitis haec locutus the light, that ye may be the children
est Iesus et abiit et abscondit se ab of light. These things spake Jesus, and
eis departed, and did hide himself from
                                             them.

12:37 cum autem tanta signa fecisset 37. But though he had done so many
coram eis non credebant in eum miracles before them, yet they believed
                                             not on him:

12:38 ut sermo Esaiae prophetae 38. That the saying of Esaias the
impleretur quem dixit Domine quis prophet might be fulfilled, which he
credidit auditui nostro et brachium spake, Lord, who hath believed our
Domini cui revelatum est report? and to whom hath the arm of the
                                             Lord been revealed?

12:39 propterea non poterant credere 39. Therefore they could not believe,
quia iterum dixit Esaias because that Esaias said again,

12:40 excaecavit oculos eorum et 40. He hath blinded their eyes, and
induravit eorum cor ut non videant hardened their heart; that they should
oculis et intellegant corde et not see with their eyes, nor understand
convertantur et sanem eos with their heart, and be converted, and
                                             I should heal them.

12:41 haec dixit Esaias quando vidit 41. These things said Esaias, when he
gloriam eius et locutus est de eo saw his glory, and spake of him.

12:42 verumtamen et ex principibus 42. Nevertheless among the chief
multi crediderunt in eum sed propter rulers also many believed on him; but
Pharisaeos non confitebantur ut de because of the Pharisees they did not
synagoga non eicerentur confess him, lest they should be put
                                             out of the synagogue:

12:43 dilexerunt enim gloriam hominum 43. For they loved the praise of men
magis quam gloriam Dei more than the praise of God.

12:44 Iesus autem clamavit et dixit 44. Jesus cried and said, He that
qui credit in me non credit in me sed believeth on me, believeth not on me,
in eum qui misit me but on him that sent me.

12:45 et qui videt me videt eum qui 45. And he that seeth me seeth him
misit me that sent me.

12:46 ego lux in mundum veni ut omnis 46. I am come a light into the world,
qui credit in me in tenebris non maneat that whosoever believeth on me should
                                             not abide in darkness.

12:47 et si quis audierit verba mea et 47. And if any man hear my words, and
non custodierit ego non iudico eum non believe not, I judge him not: for I
enim veni ut iudicem mundum sed ut came not to judge the world, but to
salvificem mundum save the world.

12:48 qui spernit me et non accipit 48. He that rejecteth me, and
verba mea habet qui iudicet eum sermo receiveth not my words, hath one that
quem locutus sum ille iudicabit eum in judgeth him: the word that I have
novissimo die spoken, the same shall judge him in the
                                             last day.

12:49  quia ego ex me ipso non sum           49.  For I have not spoken of myself;
locutus sed qui misit me Pater ipse but the Father which sent me, he gave
mihi mandatum dedit quid dicam et quid me a commandment, what I should say,
loquar and what I should speak.

12:50 et scio quia mandatum eius vita 50. And I know that his commandment is
aeterna est quae ergo ego loquor sicut life everlasting: whatsoever I speak
dixit mihi Pater sic loquor therefore, even as the Father said unto
                                             me, so I speak.
