18:1  et post haec vidi alium angelum        1.  And after these things I saw
descendentem de caelo habentem               another angel come down from heaven,
potestatem magnam et terra inluminata        having great power; and the earth was
est a gloria eius                            lightened with his glory.

18:2  et exclamavit in forti voce            2.  And he cried mightily with a strong
dicens cecidit cecidit Babylon magna et      voice, saying, Babylon the great is
facta est habitatio daemoniorum et           fallen, is fallen, and is become the
custodia omnis spiritus inmundi et           habitation of devils, and the hold of
custodia omnis volucris inmundae             every foul spirit, and a cage of every
                                             unclean and hateful bird.

18:3  quia de ira fornicationis eius         3.  For all nations have drunk of the
biberunt omnes gentes et reges terrae        wine of the wrath of her fornication,
cum illa fornicati sunt et mercatores        and the kings of the earth have
terrae de virtute deliciarum eius            committed fornication with her, and the
divites facti sunt                           merchants of the earth are waxed rich
                                             through the abundance of her delicacies.

18:4  et audivi aliam vocem de caelo         4.  And I heard another voice from
dicentem exite de illa populus meus ut       heaven, saying, Come out of her, my
ne participes sitis delictorum eius et       people, that ye be not partakers of her
de plagis eius non accipiatis                sins, and that ye receive not of her
                                             plagues.

18:5  quoniam pervenerunt peccata eius       5.  For her sins have reached unto
usque ad caelum et recordatus est Deus       heaven, and God hath remembered her
iniquitatum eius                             iniquities.

18:6  reddite illi sicut ipsa reddidit       6.  Reward her even as she rewarded
et duplicate duplicia secundum opera         you, and double unto her double
eius in poculo quo miscuit miscite illi      according to her works: in the cup
duplum                                       which she hath filled fill to her
                                             double.

18:7  quantum glorificavit se et in          7.  How much she hath glorified
deliciis fuit tantum date illi               herself, and lived deliciously, so much
tormentum et luctum quia in corde suo        torment and sorrow give her: for she
dicit sedeo regina et vidua non sum et       saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and
luctum non videbo                            am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

18:8  ideo in una die venient plagae         8.  Therefore shall her plagues come in
eius mors et luctus et fames et igni         one day, death, and mourning, and
conburetur quia fortis est Deus qui          famine; and she shall be utterly burned
iudicavit illam                              with fire: for strong is the Lord God
                                             who judgeth her.

18:9  et flebunt et plangent se super        9.  And the kings of the earth, who
illam reges terrae qui cum illa              have committed fornication and lived
fornicati sunt et in deliciis vixerunt       deliciously with her, shall bewail her,
cum viderint fumum incendii eius             and lament for her, when they shall see
                                             the smoke of her burning,

18:10  longe stantes propter timorem         10.  Standing afar off for the fear of
tormentorum eius dicentes vae vae            her torment, saying, Alas, alas that
civitas illa magna Babylon civitas illa      great city Babylon, that mighty city!
fortis quoniam una hora venit iudicium       for in one hour is thy judgment come.

18:11  et negotiatores terrae flebunt        11.  And the merchants of the earth
et lugebunt super illam quoniam merces       shall weep and mourn over her; for no
eorum nemo emet amplius                      man buyeth their merchandise any more:

18:12  mercem auri et argenti et             12.  The merchandise of gold, and
lapidis pretiosi et margaritis et byssi      silver, and precious stones, and of
et purpurae et serici et cocci et omne       pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and
lignum thyinum et omnia vasa eboris et       silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood,
omnia vasa de lapide pretioso et             and all manner vessels of ivory, and
aeramento et ferro et marmore                all manner vessels of most precious
                                             wood, and of brass, and iron, and
                                             marble,

18:13  et cinnamomum et amomum et            13.  And cinnamon, and odours, and
odoramentorum et unguenti et turis et        ointments, and frankincense, and wine,
vini et olei et similae et tritici et        and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and
iumentorum et ovium et equorum et            beasts, and sheep, and horses, and
raedarum et mancipiorum et animarum          chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.

18:14  et poma tua desiderii animae          14.  And the fruits that thy soul
discessit a te et omnia pinguia et           lusted after are departed from thee,
clara perierunt a te et amplius illa         and all things which were dainty and
iam non invenient                            goodly are departed from thee, and thou
                                             shalt find them no more at all.

18:15  mercatores horum qui divites          15.  The merchants of these things,
facti sunt ab ea longe stabunt propter       which were made rich by her, shall
timorem tormentorum eius flentes ac          stand afar off for the fear of her
lugentes                                     torment, weeping and wailing,

18:16  et dicentes vae vae civitas illa      16.  And saying, Alas, alas that great
magna quae amicta erat byssino et            city, that was clothed in fine linen,
purpura et cocco et deaurata est auro        and purple, and scarlet, and decked
et lapide pretioso et margaritis             with gold, and precious stones, and
                                             pearls!

18:17  quoniam una hora destitutae sunt      17.  For in one hour so great riches is
tantae divitiae et omnis gubernator et       come to nought. And every shipmaster,
omnis qui in locum navigat et nautae et      and all the company in ships, and
qui maria operantur longe steterunt          sailors, and as many as trade by sea,
                                             stood afar off,

18:18  et clamaverunt videntes locum         18.  And cried when they saw the smoke
incendii eius dicentes quae similis          of her burning, saying, What city is
civitati huic magnae                         like unto this great city!

18:19  et miserunt pulverem super            19.  And they cast dust on their heads,
capita sua et clamaverunt flentes et         and cried, weeping and wailing, saying,
lugentes dicentes vae vae civitas magna      Alas, alas that great city, wherein
in qua divites facti sunt omnes qui          were made rich all that had ships in
habent naves in mari de pretiis eius         the sea by reason of her costliness!
quoniam una hora desolata est                for in one hour is she made desolate.

18:20  exulta super eam caelum et            20.  Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and
sancti et apostoli et prophetae quoniam      ye holy apostles and prophets; for God
iudicavit Deus iudicium vestrum de illa      hath avenged you on her.

18:21  et sustulit unus angelus fortis       21.  And a mighty angel took up a stone
lapidem quasi molarem magnum et misit        like a great millstone, and cast it
in mare dicens hoc impetu mittetur           into the sea, saying, Thus with
Babylon magna illa civitas et ultra iam      violence shall that great city Babylon
non invenietur                               be thrown down, and shall be found no
                                             more at all.

18:22  et vox citharoedorum et               22.  And the voice of harpers, and
musicorum et tibia canentium et tuba         musicians, and of pipers, and
non audietur in te amplius et omnis          trumpeters, shall be heard no more at
artifex omnis artis non invenietur in        all in thee; and no craftsman, of
te amplius et vox molae non audietur in      whatsoever craft he be, shall be found
te amplius                                   any more in thee; and the sound of a
                                             millstone shall be heard no more at all
                                             in thee;

18:23  et lux lucernae non lucebit tibi      23.  And the light of a candle shall
amplius et vox sponsi et sponsae non         shine no more at all in thee; and the
audietur adhuc in te quia mercatores         voice of the bridegroom and of the
tui erant principes terrae quia in           bride shall be heard no more at all in
veneficiis tuis erraverunt omnes gentes      thee: for thy merchants were the great
                                             men of the earth; for by thy sorceries
                                             were all nations deceived.

18:24  et in ea sanguis prophetarum et       24.  And in her was found the blood of
sanctorum inventus est et omnium qui         prophets, and of saints, and of all
interfecti sunt in terra                     that were slain upon the earth.
