                                             in order, most excellent Theophilus,

1:4 ut cognoscas eorum verborum de 4. That thou mightest know the

                                             hast been instructed.

1:5 fuit in diebus Herodis regis 5. THERE was in the days of Herod, the
Iudaeae sacerdos quidam nomine king of Judaea, a certain priest named
Zaccharias de vice Abia et uxor illi de Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and
filiabus Aaron et nomen eius Elisabeth his wife was of the daughters of Aaron,
                                             and her name was Elisabeth.

1:6 erant autem iusti ambo ante Deum 6. And they were both righteous before
incedentes in omnibus mandatis et God, walking in all the commandments
iustificationibus Domini sine querella and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

1:7 et non erat illis filius eo quod 7. And they had no child, because that
esset Elisabeth sterilis et ambo Elisabeth was barren, and they both
processissent in diebus suis were now well stricken in years.

1:8 factum est autem cum sacerdotio 8. And it came to pass, that while he
fungeretur in ordine vicis suae ante executed the priest's office before God
Deum in the order of his course,

1:9 secundum consuetudinem sacerdotii 9. According to the custom of the
sorte exiit ut incensum poneret priest's office, his lot was to burn
ingressus in templum Domini incense when he went into the temple of
                                             the Lord.

1:10 et omnis multitudo erat populi 10. And the whole multitude of the
orans foris hora incensi people were praying without at the time
                                             of incense.

1:11 apparuit autem illi angelus 11. And there appeared unto him an
Domini stans a dextris altaris incensi angel of the Lord standing on the right
side of the altar of incense.

1:12 et Zaccharias turbatus est videns 12. And when Zacharias saw him, he was
et timor inruit super eum troubled, and fear fell upon him.

1:13 ait autem ad illum angelus ne 13. But the angel said unto him, Fear
timeas Zaccharia quoniam exaudita est not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is
deprecatio tua et uxor tua Elisabeth heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall
pariet tibi filium et vocabis nomen bear thee a son, and thou shalt call
eius Iohannem his name John.

1:14 et erit gaudium tibi et exultatio 14. And thou shalt have joy and
et multi in nativitate eius gaudebunt gladness; and many shall rejoice at his
                                             birth.

1:15 erit enim magnus coram Domino et 15. For he shall be great in the sight

suae filled with the Holy Ghost, even from
                                             his mother's womb.

1:16 et multos filiorum Israhel 16. And many of the children of Israel

1:17 et ipse praecedet ante illum in 17. And he shall go before him in the
spiritu et virtute Heliae ut convertat spirit and power of Elias, to turn the
corda patrum in filios et incredibiles hearts of the fathers to the children,
ad prudentiam iustorum parare Domino and the disobedient to the wisdom of
plebem perfectam the just; to make ready a people
                                             prepared for the Lord.

1:18 et dixit Zaccharias ad angelum 18. And Zacharias said unto the angel,
unde hoc sciam ego enim sum senex et Whereby shall I know this? for I am an
uxor mea processit in diebus suis old man, and my wife well stricken in
                                             years.

1:19 et respondens angelus dixit ei 19. And the angel answering said unto
ego sum Gabrihel qui adsto ante Deum et him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the
missus sum loqui ad te et haec tibi presence of God; and am sent to speak
evangelizare unto thee, and to shew thee these glad
                                             tidings.

1:20 et ecce eris tacens et non 20. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb,
poteris loqui usque in diem quo haec and not able to speak, until the day
fiant pro eo quod non credidisti verbis that these things shall be performed,
meis quae implebuntur in tempore suo because thou believest not my words,
which shall be fulfilled in their
                                             season.

1:21 et erat plebs expectans 21. And the people waited for
Zacchariam et mirabantur quod tardaret Zacharias, and marvelled that he
ipse in templo tarried so long in the temple.

1:22 egressus autem non poterat loqui 22. And when he came out, he could not
ad illos et cognoverunt quod visionem speak unto them: and they perceived
vidisset in templo et ipse erat innuens that he had seen a vision in the
illis et permansit mutus temple: for he beckoned unto them, and
                                             remained speechless.

1:23 et factum est ut impleti sunt 23. And it came to pass, that, as soon
dies officii eius abiit in domum suam as the days of his ministration were
accomplished, he departed to his own
                                             house.

1:24 post hos autem dies concepit 24. And after those days his wife
Elisabeth uxor eius et occultabat se Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself
mensibus quinque dicens five months, saying,

1:25 quia sic mihi fecit Dominus in 25. Thus hath the Lord dealt with me
diebus quibus respexit auferre in the days wherein he looked on me, to
obprobrium meum inter homines take away my reproach among men.

1:26 in mense autem sexto missus est 26. And in the sixth month the angel
angelus Gabrihel a Deo in civitatem Gabriel was sent from God unto a city
Galilaeae cui nomen Nazareth of Galilee, named Nazareth,

1:27 ad virginem desponsatam viro cui 27. To a virgin espoused to a man
nomen erat Ioseph de domo David et whose name was Joseph, of the house of

1:28 et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit 28. And the angel came in unto her,
have gratia plena Dominus tecum and said, Hail, thou that art highly
benedicta tu in mulieribus favoured, the Lord is with thee:
                                             blessed art thou among women.

1:29 quae cum vidisset turbata est in 29. And when she saw him, she was
sermone eius et cogitabat qualis esset troubled at his saying, and cast in her
ista salutatio mind what manner of salutation this
                                             should be.

1:30 et ait angelus ei ne timeas Maria 30. And the angel said unto her, Fear
invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum not, Mary: for thou hast found favour
                                             with God.

1:31 ecce concipies in utero et paries 31. And, behold, thou shalt conceive
filium et vocabis nomen eius Iesum in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and
                                             shalt call his name JESUS.

1:32 hic erit magnus et Filius 32. He shall be great, and shall be

                                             there shall be no end.

1:34 dixit autem Maria ad angelum 34. Then said Mary unto the angel, How
quomodo fiet istud quoniam virum non shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

1:35 et respondens angelus dixit ei 35. And the angel answered and said
Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te et unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come
virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi upon thee, and the power of the Highest
ideoque et quod nascetur sanctum shall overshadow thee: therefore also

thee shall be called the Son of God.

1:36 et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua et 36. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth,
ipsa concepit filium in senecta sua et she hath also conceived a son in her
hic mensis est sextus illi quae vocatur old age: and this is the sixth month
sterilis with her, who was called barren.

1:37 quia non erit inpossibile apud 37. For with God nothing shall be
Deum omne verbum impossible.

1:38 dixit autem Maria ecce ancilla 38. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid
Domini fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum of the Lord; be it unto me according to
et discessit ab illa angelus thy word. And the angel departed from
                                             her.

1:39 exsurgens autem Maria in diebus 39. And Mary arose in those days, and
illis abiit in montana cum festinatione went into the hill country with haste,
in civitatem Iuda                            into a city of Juda;

1:40 et intravit in domum Zacchariae 40. And entered into the house of
et salutavit Elisabeth Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

1:41 et factum est ut audivit 41. And it came to pass, that, when
salutationem Mariae Elisabeth exultavit Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary,
infans in utero eius et repleta est the babe leaped in her womb; and
Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth Elisabeth was filled with the Holy
                                             Ghost:

1:42 et exclamavit voce magna et dixit 42. And she spake out with a loud
benedicta tu inter mulieres et voice, and said, Blessed art thou among
benedictus fructus ventris tui women, and blessed is the fruit of thy
                                             womb.

1:43 et unde hoc mihi ut veniat mater 43. And whence is this to me, that the
Domini mei ad me mother of my Lord should come to me?

1:44 ecce enim ut facta est vox 44. For, lo, as soon as the voice of
salutationis tuae in auribus meis thy salutation sounded in mine ears,
exultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

1:45 et beata quae credidit quoniam 45. And blessed is she that believed:
perficientur ea quae dicta sunt ei a for there shall be a performance of
Domino those things which were told her from
                                             the Lord.

1:46 et ait Maria magnificat anima mea 46. And Mary said, My soul doth
Dominum magnify the Lord,

1:47 et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo 47. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God
salutari meo my Saviour.

1:48 quia respexit humilitatem 48. For he hath regarded the low
ancillae suae ecce enim ex hoc beatam estate of his handmaiden: for, behold,
me dicent omnes generationes from henceforth all generations shall
                                             call me blessed.

1:49 quia fecit mihi magna qui potens 49. For he that is mighty hath done to

1:50 et misericordia eius in progenies 50. And his mercy is on them that fear
et progenies timentibus eum him from generation to generation.

1:51 fecit potentiam in brachio suo 51. He hath shewed strength with his

                                             imagination of their hearts.

1:52 deposuit potentes de sede et 52. He hath put down the mighty from
exaltavit humiles their seats, and exalted them of low
                                             degree.

1:53 esurientes implevit bonis et 53. He hath filled the hungry with
divites dimisit inanes good things; and the rich he hath sent
                                             empty away.

1:54 suscepit Israhel puerum suum 54. He hath holpen his servant Israel,
memorari misericordiae                       in remembrance of his mercy;

1:55 sicut locutus est ad patres 55. As he spake to our fathers, to
nostros Abraham et semini eius in Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

1:56 mansit autem Maria cum illa quasi 56. And Mary abode with her about
mensibus tribus et reversa est in domum three months, and returned to her own
suam house.

1:57 Elisabeth autem impletum est 57. Now Elisabeth's full time came
tempus pariendi et peperit filium that she should be delivered; and she
                                             brought forth a son.

1:58 et audierunt vicini et cognati 58. And her neighbours and her cousins
eius quia magnificavit Dominus heard how the Lord had shewed great
misericordiam suam cum illa et mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with
congratulabantur ei her.

1:59 et factum est in die octavo 59. And it came to pass, that on the
venerunt circumcidere puerum et eighth day they came to circumcise the
vocabant eum nomine patris eius child; and they called him Zacharias,
Zacchariam after the name of his father.

1:60 et respondens mater eius dixit 60. And his mother answered and said,
nequaquam sed vocabitur Iohannes Not so; but he shall be called John.

1:61 et dixerunt ad illam quia nemo 61. And they said unto her, There is
est in cognatione tua qui vocetur hoc none of thy kindred that is called by
nomine this name.

1:62 innuebant autem patri eius quem 62. And they made signs to his father,
vellet vocari eum how he would have him called.

1:63 et postulans pugillarem scripsit 63. And he asked for a writing table,
dicens Iohannes est nomen eius et and wrote, saying, His name is John.
mirati sunt universi And they marvelled all.

1:64 apertum est autem ilico os eius 64. And his mouth was opened
et lingua eius et loquebatur benedicens immediately, and his tongue loosed, and
Deum he spake, and praised God.

1:65 et factus est timor super omnes 65. And fear came on all that dwelt
vicinos eorum et super omnia montana round about them: and all these sayings
Iudaeae divulgabantur omnia verba haec were noised abroad throughout all the
                                             hill country of Judaea.

1:66 et posuerunt omnes qui audierant 66. And all they that heard them laid
in corde suo dicentes quid putas puer them up in their hearts, saying, What
iste erit etenim manus Domini erat cum manner of child shall this be! And the
illo hand of the Lord was with him.

1:67 et Zaccharias pater eius impletus 67. And his father Zacharias was
est Spiritu Sancto et prophetavit dicens filled with the Holy Ghost, and
                                             prophesied, saying,

1:68  benedictus Deus Israhel quia           68.  Blessed be the Lord God of Israel;
visitavit et fecit redemptionem plebi for he hath visited and redeemed his
suae people,

1:69 et erexit cornu salutis nobis in 69. And hath raised up an horn of
domo David pueri sui salvation for us in the house of his
                                             servant David;

1:70 sicut locutus est per os 70. As he spake by the mouth of his
sanctorum qui a saeculo sunt holy prophets, which have been since
prophetarum eius the world began:

1:71 salutem ex inimicis nostris et de 71. That we should be saved from our
manu omnium qui oderunt nos enemies, and from the hand of all that
                                             hate us;

1:72 ad faciendam misericordiam cum 72. To perform the mercy promised to
patribus nostris et memorari testamenti our fathers, and to remember his holy
sui sancti                                   covenant;

1:73 iusiurandum quod iuravit ad 73. The oath which he sware to our
Abraham patrem nostrum father Abraham,

1:74 daturum se nobis ut sine timore 74. That he would grant unto us, that
de manu inimicorum nostrorum liberati we being delivered out of the hand of
serviamus illi our enemies might serve him without
                                             fear,

1:75 in sanctitate et iustitia coram 75. In holiness and righteousness
ipso omnibus diebus nostris before him, all the days of our life.

1:76 et tu puer propheta Altissimi 76. And thou, child, shalt be called
vocaberis praeibis enim ante faciem the prophet of the Highest: for thou
Domini parare vias eius shalt go before the face of the Lord to
                                             prepare his ways;

1:77 ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi 77. To give knowledge of salvation
eius in remissionem peccatorum eorum unto his people by the remission of
                                             their sins,

1:78 per viscera misericordiae Dei 78. Through the tender mercy of our
nostri in quibus visitavit nos oriens God; whereby the dayspring from on high
ex alto hath visited us,

1:79 inluminare his qui in tenebris et 79. To give light to them that sit in
in umbra mortis sedent ad dirigendos darkness and in the shadow of death, to
pedes nostros in viam pacis guide our feet into the way of peace.

1:80 puer autem crescebat et 80. And the child grew, and waxed
confortabatur spiritu et erat in strong in spirit, and was in the
deserto usque in diem ostensionis suae deserts till the day of his shewing
ad Israhel unto Israel.
