3:1  anno autem quintodecimo imperii         1.  Now in the fifteenth year of the
Tiberii Caesaris procurante Pontio           reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius
Pilato Iudaeam tetrarcha autem               Pilate being governor of Judaea, and
Galilaeae Herode Philippo autem fratre       Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and
eius tetrarcha Itureae et Trachonitidis      his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea
regionis et Lysania Abilinae tetrarcha       and of the region of Trachonitis, and
                                             Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

3:2  sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et      2.  Annas and Caiaphas being the high
Caiapha factum est verbum Dei super          priests, the word of God came unto John
Iohannem Zacchariae filium in deserto        the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3:3  et venit in omnem regionem              3.  And he came into all the country
Iordanis praedicans baptismum                about Jordan, preaching the baptism of
paenitentiae in remissionem peccatorum       repentance for the remission of sins;

3:4  sicut scriptum est in libro             4.  As it is written in the book of the
sermonum Esaiae prophetae vox clamantis      words of Esaias the prophet, saying,
in deserto parate viam Domini rectas         The voice of one crying in the
facite semitas eius                          wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the
                                             Lord, make his paths straight.

3:5  omnis vallis implebitur et omnis        5.  Every valley shall be filled, and
mons et collis humiliabitur et erunt         every mountain and hill shall be
prava in directa et aspera in vias           brought low; and the crooked shall be
planas                                       made straight, and the rough ways shall
                                             be made smooth;

3:6  et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei      6.  And all flesh shall see the
                                             salvation of God.

3:7  dicebat ergo ad turbas quae             7.  Then said he to the multitude that
exiebant ut baptizarentur ab ipso            came forth to be baptized of him, O
genimina viperarum quis ostendit vobis       generation of vipers, who hath warned
fugere a ventura ira                         you to flee from the wrath to come?

3:8  facite ergo fructus dignos              8.  Bring forth therefore fruits worthy
paenitentiae et ne coeperitis dicere         of repentance, and begin not to say
patrem habemus Abraham dico enim vobis       within yourselves, We have Abraham to
quia potest Deus de lapidibus istis          our father: for I say unto you, That
suscitare filios Abrahae                     God is able of these stones to raise up
                                             children unto Abraham.

3:9  iam enim securis ad radicem             9.  And now also the axe is laid unto
arborum posita est omnis ergo arbor non      the root of the trees: every tree
faciens fructum exciditur et in ignem        therefore which bringeth not forth good
mittitur                                     fruit is hewn down, and cast into the
                                             fire.

3:10  et interrogabant eum turbae            10.  And the people asked him, saying,
dicentes quid ergo faciemus                  What shall we do then?

3:11  respondens autem dicebat illis         11.  He answereth and saith unto them,
qui habet duas tunicas det non habenti       He that hath two coats, let him impart
et qui habet escas similiter faciat          to him that hath none; and he that hath
                                             meat, let him do likewise.

3:12  venerunt autem et publicani ut         12.  Then came also publicans to be
baptizarentur et dixerunt ad illum           baptized, and said unto him, Master,
magister quid faciemus                       what shall we do?

3:13  at ille dixit ad eos nihil             13.  And he said unto them, Exact no
amplius quam quod constitutum est vobis      more than that which is appointed you.

3:14  interrogabant autem eum et             14.  And the soldiers likewise demanded
milites dicentes quid faciemus et nos        of him, saying, And what shall we do?
et ait illis neminem concutiatis neque       And he said unto them, Do violence to
calumniam faciatis et contenti estote        no man, neither accuse any falsely; and
stipendiis vestris                           be content with your wages.

3:15  existimante autem populo et            15.  And as the people were in
cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis        expectation, and all men mused in their

3:17  cuius ventilabrum in manu eius et      17.  Whose fan is in his hand, and he
purgabit aream suam et congregabit           will throughly purge his floor, and
triticum in horreum suum paleas autem        will gather the wheat into his garner;
conburet igni inextinguibili                 but the chaff he will burn with fire
                                             unquenchable.

3:18  multa quidem et alia exhortans         18.  And many other things in his
evangelizabat populum                        exhortation preached he unto the people.

3:19  Herodes autem tetrarcha cum            19.  But Herod the tetrarch, being
corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore      reproved by him for Herodias his
fratris sui et de omnibus malis quae         brother Philip's wife, and for all the
fecit Herodes                                evils which Herod had done,

3:20  adiecit et hoc supra omnia et          20.  Added yet this above all, that he
inclusit Iohannem in carcere                 shut up John in prison.

3:21  factum est autem cum baptizaretur      21.  Now when all the people were
omnis populus et Iesu baptizato et           baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus
orante apertum est caelum                    also being baptized, and praying, the
                                             heaven was opened,

3:22  et descendit Spiritus Sanctus          22.  And the Holy Ghost descended in a
corporali specie sicut columba in ipsum      bodily shape like a dove upon him, and
et vox de caelo facta est tu es Filius       a voice came from heaven, which said,
meus dilectus in te conplacuit mihi          Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am
                                             well pleased.

3:23  et ipse Iesus erat incipiens           23.  And Jesus himself began to be
quasi annorum triginta ut putabatur          about thirty years of age, being (as
filius Ioseph qui fuit Heli                  was supposed) the son of Joseph, which
