4:1  Iesus autem plenus Spiritu Sancto       1.  And Jesus being full of the Holy
regressus est ab Iordane et agebatur in      Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led

4:2  diebus quadraginta et temptabatur       2.  Being forty days tempted of the

4:3  dixit autem illi diabolus si            3.  And the devil said unto him, If

4:5  et duxit illum diabolus et              5.  And the devil, taking him up into
ostendit illi omnia regna orbis terrae       an high mountain, shewed unto him all
in momento temporis                          the kingdoms of the world in a moment

4:6  et ait ei tibi dabo potestatem          6.  And the devil said unto him, All
hanc universam et gloriam illorum quia       this power will I give thee, and the
mihi tradita sunt et cui volo do illa        glory of them: for that is delivered
                                             unto me; and to whomsoever I will I
                                             give it.

4:7  tu ergo si adoraveris coram me          7.  If thou therefore wilt worship me,
erunt tua omnia                              all shall be thine.

4:8  et respondens Iesus dixit illi          8.  And Jesus answered and said unto
scriptum est Dominum Deum tuum adorabis      him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it
et illi soli servies                         is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord
                                             thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

4:9  et duxit illum in Hierusalem et         9.  And he brought him to Jerusalem,
statuit eum supra pinnam templi et           and set him on a pinnacle of the

4:12  et respondens Iesus ait illi           12.  And Jesus answering said unto him,
dictum est non temptabis Dominum Deum        It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the
tuum                                         Lord thy God.

4:13  et consummata omni temptatione         13.  And when the devil had ended all
diabolus recessit ab illo usque ad           the temptation, he departed from him
tempus                                       for a season.

4:14  et regressus est Iesus in virtute      14.  And Jesus returned in the power of
Spiritus in Galilaeam et fama exiit per      the Spirit into Galilee: and there went
universam regionem de illo                   out a fame of him through all the
                                             region round about.

4:15  et ipse docebat in synagogis           15.  And he taught in their synagogues,
eorum et magnificabatur ab omnibus           being glorified of all.

4:16  et venit Nazareth ubi erat             16.  And he came to Nazareth, where he
nutritus et intravit secundum                had been brought up: and, as his custom
consuetudinem suam die sabbati in            was, he went into the synagogue on the
synagogam et surrexit legere                 sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

4:17  et traditus est illi liber             17.  And there was delivered unto him

4:22  et omnes testimonium illi dabant       22.  And all bare him witness, and

4:24  ait autem amen dico vobis quia         24.  And he said, Verily I say unto
nemo propheta acceptus est in patria sua     you, No prophet is accepted in his own
                                             country.

4:25  in veritate dico vobis multae          25.  But I tell you of a truth, many
viduae erant in diebus Heliae in             widows were in Israel in the days of
Israhel quando clusum est caelum annis       Elias, when the heaven was shut up
tribus et mensibus sex cum facta est         three years and six months, when great

4:28  et repleti sunt omnes in synagoga      28.  And all they in the synagogue,

                                             filled with wrath,

4:29  et surrexerunt et eiecerunt illum      29.  And rose up, and thrust him out of
extra civitatem et duxerunt illum usque      the city, and led him unto the brow of
ad supercilium montis supra quem             the hill whereon their city was built,
civitas illorum erat aedificata ut           that they might cast him down headlong.

4:30  ipse autem transiens per medium        30.  But he passing through the midst

                                             I know thee who thou art; the Holy One
                                             of God.

4:35  et increpavit illi Iesus dicens        35.  And Jesus rebuked him, saying,
obmutesce et exi ab illo et cum              Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
proiecisset illum daemonium in medium        And when the devil had thrown him in
exiit ab illo nihilque illum nocuit          the midst, he came out of him, and hurt
                                             him not.

4:36  et factus est pavor in omnibus et      36.  And they were all amazed, and
conloquebantur ad invicem dicentes quod      spake among themselves, saying, What a
est hoc verbum quia in potestate et          word is this! for with authority and
virtute imperat inmundis spiritibus et       power he commandeth the unclean
exeunt                                       spirits, and they come out.

4:37  et divulgabatur fama de illo in        37.  And the fame of him went out into

4:38  surgens autem de synagoga              38.  And he arose out of the synagogue,
introivit in domum Simonis socrus autem      and entered into Simon's house. And
Simonis tenebatur magnis febribus et         Simon's wife's mother was taken with a
rogaverunt illum pro ea                      great fever; and they besought him for
                                             her.

4:39  et stans super illam imperavit         39.  And he stood over her, and rebuked
febri et dimisit illam et continuo           the fever; and it left her: and
surgens ministrabat illis                    immediately she arose and ministered
                                             unto them.

4:40  cum sol autem occidisset omnes         40.  Now when the sun was setting, all
qui habebant infirmos variis                 they that had any sick with divers
languoribus ducebant illos ad eum at         diseases brought them unto him; and he
ille singulis manus inponens curabat eos     laid his hands on every one of them,
                                             and healed them.

4:41  exiebant autem etiam daemonia a        41.  And devils also came out of many,
multis clamantia et dicentia quia tu es      crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ
Filius Dei et increpans non sinebat ea       the Son of God. And he rebuking them
loqui quia sciebant ipsum esse Christum      suffered them not to speak: for they
                                             knew that he was Christ.

4:42  facta autem die egressus ibat in       42.  And when it was day, he departed
desertum locum et turbae requirebant         and went into a desert place: and the
eum et venerunt usque ad ipsum et            people sought him, and came unto him,
detinebant illum ne discederet ab eis        and stayed him, that he should not
                                             depart from them.

4:43  quibus ille ait quia et aliis          43.  And he said unto them, I must
civitatibus oportet me evangelizare          preach the kingdom of God to other
regnum Dei quia ideo missus sum              cities also: for therefore am I sent.

4:44  et erat praedicans in synagogis        44.  And he preached in the synagogues
Galilaeae                                    of Galilee.
