5:1  factum est autem cum turbae             1.  And it came to pass, that, as the

5:3  ascendens autem in unam navem quae      3.  And he entered into one of the

navicula turbas                              from the land. And he sat down, and
                                             taught the people out of the ship.

5:4  ut cessavit autem loqui dixit ad        4.  Now when he had left speaking, he

5:5  et respondens Simon dixit illi          5.  And Simon answering said unto him,

rete                                         thy word I will let down the net.

5:6  et cum hoc fecissent concluserunt       6.  And when they had this done, they
piscium multitudinem copiosam                inclosed a great multitude of fishes:
rumpebatur autem rete eorum                  and their net brake.

5:7  et annuerunt sociis qui erant in        7.  And they beckoned unto their
alia navi ut venirent et adiuvarent eos      partners, which were in the other ship,
et venerunt et impleverunt ambas             that they should come and help them.
naviculas ita ut mergerentur                 And they came, and filled both the
                                             ships, so that they began to sink.

5:8  quod cum videret Simon Petrus           8.  When Simon Peter saw it, he fell
procidit ad genua Iesu dicens exi a me       down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart
quia homo peccator sum Domine                from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

5:9  stupor enim circumdederat eum et        9.  For he was astonished, and all that
omnes qui cum illo erant in captura          were with him, at the draught of the
piscium quam ceperant                        fishes which they had taken:

5:10  similiter autem Iacobum et             10.  And so was also James, and John,
Iohannem filios Zebedaei qui erant           the sons of Zebedee, which were
socii Simonis et ait ad Simonem Iesus        partners with Simon. And Jesus said
noli timere ex hoc iam homines eris          unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth
capiens                                      thou shalt catch men.

5:11  et subductis ad terram navibus         11.  And when they had brought their
relictis omnibus secuti sunt illum           ships to land, they forsook all, and
                                             followed him.

5:12  et factum est cum esset in una         12.  And it came to pass, when he was
civitatum et ecce vir plenus lepra et        in a certain city, behold a man full of
videns Iesum et procidens in faciem          leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his
rogavit eum dicens Domine si vis potes       face, and besought him, saying, Lord,
me mundare                                   if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

5:13  et extendens manum tetigit illum       13.  And he put forth his hand, and
dicens volo mundare et confestim lepra       touched him, saying, I will: be thou
discessit ab illo                            clean. And immediately the leprosy
                                             departed from him.

5:14  et ipse praecepit illi ut nemini       14.  And he charged him to tell no man:
diceret sed vade ostende te sacerdoti        but go, and shew thyself to the priest,
et offer pro emundatione tua sicut           and offer for thy cleansing, according
praecepit Moses in testimonium illis         as Moses commanded, for a testimony
                                             unto them.

5:15  perambulabat autem magis sermo de      15.  But so much the more went there a
illo et conveniebant turbae multae ut        fame abroad of him: and great
audirent et curarentur ab                    multitudes came together to hear, and
infirmitatibus suis                          to be healed by him of their
                                             infirmities.

5:16  ipse autem secedebat in deserto        16.  And he withdrew himself into the
et orabat                                    wilderness, and prayed.

5:17  et factum est in una dierum et         17.  And it came to pass on a certain
ipse sedebat docens et erant Pharisaei       day, as he was teaching, that there
sedentes et legis doctores qui venerant      were Pharisees and doctors of the law
ex omni castello Galilaeae et Iudaeae        sitting by, which were come out of
et Hierusalem et virtus erat Domini ad       every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and
sanandum eos                                 Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord
                                             was present to heal them.

5:18  et ecce viri portantes in lecto        18.  And, behold, men brought in a bed
hominem qui erat paralyticus et              a man which was taken with a palsy: and
quaerebant eum inferre et ponere ante        they sought means to bring him in, and
eum                                          to lay him before him.

5:19  et non invenientes qua parte           19.  And when they could not find by
illum inferrent prae turba ascenderunt       what way they might bring him in
supra tectum per tegulas submiserunt         because of the multitude, they went
illum cum lecto in medium ante Iesum         upon the housetop, and let him down

5:20  quorum fidem ut vidit dixit homo       20.  And when he saw their faith, he
remittuntur tibi peccata tua                 said unto him, Man, thy sins are
                                             forgiven thee.

5:21  et coeperunt cogitare scribae et       21.  And the scribes and the Pharisees
Pharisaei dicentes quis est hic qui          began to reason, saying, Who is this
loquitur blasphemias quis potest             which speaketh blasphemies? Who can
dimittere peccata nisi solus Deus            forgive sins, but God alone?

5:22  ut cognovit autem Iesus                22.  But when Jesus perceived their
cogitationes eorum respondens dixit ad       thoughts, he answering said unto them,
illos quid cogitatis in cordibus vestris     What reason ye in your hearts?

5:23  quid est facilius dicere               23.  Whether is easier, to say, Thy
dimittuntur tibi peccata an dicere           sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise
surge et ambula                              up and walk?

5:24  ut autem sciatis quia Filius           24.  But that ye may know that the Son
hominis potestatem habet in terra            of man hath power upon earth to forgive
dimittere peccata ait paralytico tibi        sins, (he said unto the sick of the
dico surge tolle lectum tuum et vade in      palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and
domum tuam                                   take up thy couch, and go into thine
                                             house.

5:25  et confestim surgens coram illis       25.  And immediately he rose up before
tulit in quo iacebat et abiit in domum       them, and took up that whereon he lay,
suam magnificans Deum                        and departed to his own house,
                                             glorifying God.

5:26  et stupor adprehendit omnes et         26.  And they were all amazed, and they
magnificabant Deum et repleti sunt           glorified God, and were filled with
timore dicentes quia vidimus mirabilia       fear, saying, We have seen strange
hodie                                        things to day.

5:27  et post haec exiit et vidit            27.  And after these things he went
publicanum nomine Levi sedentem ad           forth, and saw a publican, named Levi,
teloneum et ait illi sequere me              sitting at the receipt of custom: and
                                             he said unto him, Follow me.

5:28  et relictis omnibus surgens            28.  And he left all, rose up, and
secutus est eum                              followed him.

5:29  et fecit ei convivium magnum Levi      29.  And Levi made him a great feast in
in domo sua et erat turba multa              his own house: and there was a great
publicanorum et aliorum qui cum illis        company of publicans and of others that
erant discumbentes                           sat down with them.

5:30  et murmurabant Pharisaei et            30.  But their scribes and Pharisees
scribae eorum dicentes ad discipulos         murmured against his disciples, saying,
eius quare cum publicanis et                 Why do ye eat and drink with publicans
peccatoribus manducatis et bibitis           and sinners?

5:31  et respondens Iesus dixit ad           31.  And Jesus answering said unto
illos non egent qui sani sunt medico         them, They that are whole need not a
sed qui male habent                          physician; but they that are sick.

5:32  non veni vocare iustos sed             32.  I came not to call the righteous,
peccatores in paenitentiam                   but sinners to repentance.

5:33  at illi dixerunt ad eum quare          33.  And they said unto him, Why do the
discipuli Iohannis ieiunant frequenter       disciples of John fast often, and make
et obsecrationes faciunt similiter et        prayers, and likewise the disciples of
Pharisaeorum tui autem edunt et bibunt       the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

5:34  quibus ipse ait numquid potestis       34.  And he said unto them, Can ye make
filios sponsi dum cum illis est sponsus      the children of the bridechamber fast,
facere ieiunare                              while the bridegroom is with them?

5:35  venient autem dies et cum ablatus      35.  But the days will come, when the
fuerit ab illis sponsus tunc ieiunabunt      bridegroom shall be taken away from
in illis diebus                              them, and then shall they fast in those
                                             days.

5:36  dicebat autem et similitudinem ad      36.  And he spake also a parable unto
illos quia nemo commissuram a                them; No man putteth a piece of a new
vestimento novo inmittit in vestimentum      garment upon an old; if otherwise, then
vetus alioquin et novum rumpit et            both the new maketh a rent, and the
veteri non convenit commissura a novo        piece that was taken out of the new
                                             agreeth not with the old.

5:37  et nemo mittit vinum novum in          37.  And no man putteth new wine into
utres veteres alioquin rumpet vinum          old bottles; else the new wine will
novum utres et ipsum effundetur et           burst the bottles, and be spilled, and
utres peribunt                               the bottles shall perish.

5:38  sed vinum novum in utres novos         38.  But new wine must be put into new
mittendum est et utraque conservantur        bottles; and both are preserved.

5:39  et nemo bibens vetus statim vult       39.  No man also having drunk old wine
novum dicit enim vetus melius est            straightway desireth new: for he saith,
                                             The old is better.
