12:1 multis autem turbis 1. In the mean time, when there were
circumstantibus ita ut se invicem gathered together an innumerable
conculcarent coepit dicere ad multitude of people, insomuch that they
discipulos suos adtendite a fermento trode one upon another, he began to say
Pharisaeorum quae est hypocrisis unto his disciples first of all, Beware
ye of the leaven of the Pharisees,
which is hypocrisy.
12:2 nihil autem opertum est quod non 2. For there is nothing covered, that
reveletur neque absconditum quod non shall not be revealed; neither hid,
sciatur that shall not be known.
12:3 quoniam quae in tenebris dixistis 3. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken
in lumine dicentur et quod in aurem in darkness shall be heard in the
locuti estis in cubiculis praedicabitur light; and that which ye have spoken in
in tectis the ear in closets shall be proclaimed
upon the housetops.
12:4 dico autem vobis amicis meis ne 4. And I say unto you my friends, Be
terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus not afraid of them that kill the body,
et post haec non habent amplius quod and after that have no more that they
faciant can do.
12:5 ostendam autem vobis quem 5. But I will forewarn you whom ye
timeatis timete eum qui postquam shall fear: Fear him, which after he
occiderit habet potestatem mittere in hath killed hath power to cast into
gehennam ita dico vobis hunc timete hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
12:6 nonne quinque passeres veneunt 6. Are not five sparrows sold for two
dipundio et unus ex illis non est in farthings, and not one of them is
oblivione coram Deo forgotten before God?
12:7 sed et capilli capitis vestri 7. But even the very hairs of your
omnes numerati sunt nolite ergo timere head are all numbered. Fear not
multis passeribus pluris estis therefore: ye are of more value than
many sparrows.
12:8 dico autem vobis omnis quicumque 8. Also I say unto you, Whosoever
confessus fuerit in me coram hominibus shall confess me before men, him shall
et Filius hominis confitebitur in illo the Son of man also confess before the
coram angelis Dei angels of God:
12:9 qui autem negaverit me coram 9. But he that denieth me before men
hominibus denegabitur coram angelis Dei shall be denied before the angels of
God.
12:10 et omnis qui dicit verbum in 10. And whosoever shall speak a word
Filium hominis remittetur illi ei autem against the Son of man, it shall be
qui in Spiritum Sanctum blasphemaverit forgiven him: but unto him that
non remittetur blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it
shall not be forgiven.
12:11 cum autem inducent vos in 11. And when they bring you unto the
synagogas et ad magistratus et synagogues, and unto magistrates, and
potestates nolite solliciti esse powers, take ye no thought how or what
qualiter aut quid respondeatis aut quid thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall
dicatis say:
12:12 Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit 12. For the Holy Ghost shall teach you
vos in ipsa hora quae oporteat dicere in the same hour what ye ought to say.
12:13 ait autem quidam ei de turba 13. And one of the company said unto
magister dic fratri meo ut dividat him, Master, speak to my brother, that
mecum hereditatem he divide the inheritance with me.
12:14 at ille dixit ei homo quis me 14. And he said unto him, Man, who
constituit iudicem aut divisorem super made me a judge or a divider over you?
vos
12:15 dixitque ad illos videte et 15. And he said unto them, Take heed,
cavete ab omni avaritia quia non in and beware of covetousness: for a man's
abundantia cuiusquam vita eius est ex life consisteth not in the abundance of
his quae possidet the things which he possesseth.
12:16 dixit autem similitudinem ad 16. And he spake a parable unto them,
illos dicens hominis cuiusdam divitis saying, The ground of a certain rich
uberes fructus ager adtulit man brought forth plentifully:
12:17 et cogitabat intra se dicens 17. And he thought within himself,
quid faciam quod non habeo quo saying, What shall I do, because I have
congregem fructus meos no room where to bestow my fruits?
12:18 et dixit hoc faciam destruam 18. And he said, This will I do: I
horrea mea et maiora faciam et illuc will pull down my barns, and build
congregabo omnia quae nata sunt mihi et greater; and there will I bestow all my
bona mea fruits and my goods.
12:19 et dicam animae meae anima habes 19. And I will say to my soul, Soul,
multa bona posita in annos plurimos thou hast much goods laid up for many
requiesce comede bibe epulare years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and
be merry.
12:20 dixit autem illi Deus stulte hac 20. But God said unto him, Thou fool,
nocte animam tuam repetunt a te quae this night thy soul shall be required
autem parasti cuius erunt of thee: then whose shall those things
be, which thou hast provided?
12:21 sic est qui sibi thesaurizat et 21. So is he that layeth up treasure
non est in Deum dives for himself, and is not rich toward God.
12:22 dixitque ad discipulos suos ideo 22. And he said unto his disciples,
dico vobis nolite solliciti esse animae Therefore I say unto you, Take no
quid manducetis neque corpori quid thought for your life, what ye shall
vestiamini eat; neither for the body, what ye
shall put on.
12:23 anima plus est quam esca et 23. The life is more than meat, and
corpus quam vestimentum the body is more than raiment.
12:24 considerate corvos quia non 24. Consider the ravens: for they
seminant neque metunt quibus non est neither sow nor reap; which neither
cellarium neque horreum et Deus pascit have storehouse nor barn; and God
illos quanto magis vos pluris estis feedeth them: how much more are ye
illis better than the fowls?
12:25 quis autem vestrum cogitando 25. And which of you with taking
potest adicere ad staturam suam cubitum thought can add to his stature one
unum cubit?
12:26 si ergo neque quod minimum est 26. If ye then be not able to do that
potestis quid de ceteris solliciti estis thing which is least, why take ye
thought for the rest?
12:27 considerate lilia quomodo 27. Consider the lilies how they grow:
crescunt non laborant non nent dico they toil not, they spin not; and yet I
autem vobis nec Salomon in omni gloria say unto you, that Solomon in all his
sua vestiebatur sicut unum ex istis glory was not arrayed like one of these.
12:28 si autem faenum quod hodie in 28. If then God so clothe the grass,
agro est et cras in clibanum mittitur which is to day in the field, and to
Deus sic vestit quanto magis vos morrow is cast into the oven; how much
pusillae fidei more will he clothe you, O ye of little
faith?
12:29 et vos nolite quaerere quid 29. And seek not ye what ye shall eat,
manducetis aut quid bibatis et nolite or what ye shall drink, neither be ye
in sublime tolli of doubtful mind.
12:30 haec enim omnia gentes mundi 30. For all these things do the
quaerunt Pater autem vester scit nations of the world seek after: and
quoniam his indigetis your Father knoweth that ye have need
of these things.
12:31 verumtamen quaerite regnum Dei 31. But rather seek ye the kingdom of
et haec omnia adicientur vobis God; and all these things shall be
added unto you.
12:32 nolite timere pusillus grex quia 32. Fear not, little flock; for it is
conplacuit Patri vestro dare vobis your Father's good pleasure to give you
regnum the kingdom.
12:33 vendite quae possidetis et date 33. Sell that ye have, and give alms;
elemosynam facite vobis sacculos qui provide yourselves bags which wax not
non veterescunt thesaurum non old, a treasure in the heavens that
deficientem in caelis quo fur non faileth not, where no thief
adpropiat neque tinea corrumpit approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
12:34 ubi enim thesaurus vester est 34. For where your treasure is, there
ibi et cor vestrum erit will your heart be also.
12:35 sint lumbi vestri praecincti et 35. Let your loins be girded about,
lucernae ardentes and your lights burning;
12:36 et vos similes hominibus 36. And ye yourselves like unto men
expectantibus dominum suum quando that wait for their lord, when he will
revertatur a nuptiis ut cum venerit et return from the wedding; that when he
pulsaverit confestim aperiant ei cometh and knocketh, they may open unto
him immediately.
12:37 beati servi illi quos cum 37. Blessed are those servants, whom
venerit dominus invenerit vigilantes the lord when he cometh shall find
amen dico vobis quod praecinget se et watching: verily I say unto you, that
faciet illos discumbere et transiens he shall gird himself, and make them to
ministrabit illis sit down to meat, and will come forth
and serve them.
12:38 et si venerit in secunda vigilia 38. And if he shall come in the second
et si in tertia vigilia venerit et ita watch, or come in the third watch, and
invenerit beati sunt servi illi find them so, blessed are those
servants.
12:39 hoc autem scitote quia si sciret 39. And this know, that if the goodman
pater familias qua hora fur veniret of the house had known what hour the
vigilaret utique et non sineret thief would come, he would have
perfodiri domum suam watched, and not have suffered his
house to be broken through.
12:40 et vos estote parati quia qua 40. Be ye therefore ready also: for
hora non putatis Filius hominis venit the Son of man cometh at an hour when
ye think not.
12:41 ait autem ei Petrus Domine ad 41. Then Peter said unto him, Lord,
nos dicis hanc parabolam an et ad omnes speakest thou this parable unto us, or
even to all?
12:42 dixit autem Dominus quis putas 42. And the Lord said, Who then is
est fidelis dispensator et prudens quem that faithful and wise steward, whom
constituet dominus super familiam suam his lord shall make ruler over his
ut det illis in tempore tritici mensuram household, to give them their portion
of meat in due season?
12:43 beatus ille servus quem cum 43. Blessed is that servant, whom his
venerit dominus invenerit ita facientem lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
12:44 vere dico vobis quia supra omnia 44. Of a truth I say unto you, that he
quae possidet constituet illum will make him ruler over all that he
hath.
12:45 quod si dixerit servus ille in 45. But and if that servant say in his
corde suo moram facit dominus meus heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and
venire et coeperit percutere pueros et shall begin to beat the menservants and
ancillas et edere et bibere et inebriari maidens, and to eat and drink, and to
be drunken;
12:46 veniet dominus servi illius in 46. The lord of that servant will come
die qua non sperat et hora qua nescit in a day when he looketh not for him,
et dividet eum partemque eius cum and at an hour when he is not aware,
infidelibus ponet and will cut him in sunder, and will
appoint him his portion with the
unbelievers.
12:47 ille autem servus qui cognovit 47. And that servant, which knew his
voluntatem domini sui et non lord's will, and prepared not himself,
praeparavit et non fecit secundum neither did according to his will,
voluntatem eius vapulabit multas shall be beaten with many stripes.
12:48 qui autem non cognovit et fecit 48. But he that knew not, and did
digna plagis vapulabit paucis omni commit things worthy of stripes, shall
autem cui multum datum est multum be beaten with few stripes. For unto
quaeretur ab eo et cui commendaverunt whomsoever much is given, of him shall
multum plus petent ab eo be much required: and to whom men have
committed much, of him they will ask
the more.
12:49 ignem veni mittere in terram et 49. I am come to send fire on the
quid volo si accendatur earth; and what will I, if it be
already kindled?
12:50 baptisma autem habeo baptizari 50. But I have a baptism to be
et quomodo coartor usque dum perficiatur baptized with; and how am I straitened
till it be accomplished!
12:51 putatis quia pacem veni dare in 51. Suppose ye that I am come to give
terram non dico vobis sed separationem peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but
rather division:
12:52 erunt enim ex hoc quinque in 52. For from henceforth there shall be
domo una divisi tres in duo et duo in five in one house divided, three
tres against two, and two against three.
12:53 dividentur pater in filium et 53. The father shall be divided
filius in patrem suum mater in filiam against the son, and the son against
et filia in matrem socrus in nurum suam the father; the mother against the
et nurus in socrum suam daughter, and the daughter against the
mother; the mother in law against her
daughter in law, and the daughter in
law against her mother in law.
12:54 dicebat autem et ad turbas cum 54. And he said also to the people,
videritis nubem orientem ab occasu When ye see a cloud rise out of the
statim dicitis nimbus venit et ita fit west, straightway ye say, There cometh
a shower; and so it is.
12:55 et cum austrum flantem dicitis 55. And when ye see the south wind
quia aestus erit et fit blow, ye say, There will be heat; and
it cometh to pass.
12:56 hypocritae faciem terrae et 56. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the
caeli nostis probare hoc autem tempus face of the sky and of the earth; but
quomodo non probatis how is it that ye do not discern this
time?
12:57 quid autem et a vobis ipsis non 57. Yea, and why even of yourselves
iudicatis quod iustum est judge ye not what is right?
12:58 cum autem vadis cum adversario 58. When thou goest with thine
tuo ad principem in via da operam adversary to the magistrate, as thou
liberari ab illo ne forte trahat te art in the way, give diligence that
apud iudicem et iudex tradat te thou mayest be delivered from him; lest
exactori et exactor mittat te in he hale thee to the judge, and the
carcerem judge deliver thee to the officer, and
the officer cast thee into prison.
12:59 dico tibi non exies inde donec 59. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart
etiam novissimum minutum reddas thence, till thou hast paid the very
last mite.
