16:1 dicebat autem et ad discipulos 1. And he said also unto his
suos homo quidam erat dives qui habebat disciples, There was a certain rich
vilicum et hic diffamatus est apud man, which had a steward; and the same
illum quasi dissipasset bona ipsius was accused unto him that he had wasted
                                             his goods.

16:2 et vocavit illum et ait illi quid 2. And he called him, and said unto
hoc audio de te redde rationem him, How is it that I hear this of
vilicationis tuae iam enim non poteris thee? give an account of thy
vilicare stewardship; for thou mayest be no
                                             longer steward.

16:3 ait autem vilicus intra se quid 3. Then the steward said within
faciam quia dominus meus aufert a me himself, What shall I do? for my lord
vilicationem fodere non valeo mendicare taketh away from me the stewardship: I
erubesco cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.

16:4 scio quid faciam ut cum amotus 4. I am resolved what to do, that,
fuero a vilicatione recipiant me in when I am put out of the stewardship,
domos suas they may receive me into their houses.

16:5 convocatis itaque singulis 5. So he called every one of his
debitoribus domini sui dicebat primo lord's debtors unto him, and said unto
quantum debes domino meo the first, How much owest thou unto my
                                             lord?

16:6 at ille dixit centum cados olei 6. And he said, An hundred measures of
dixitque illi accipe cautionem tuam et oil. And he said unto him, Take thy
sede cito scribe quinquaginta bill, and sit down quickly, and write
                                             fifty.

16:7 deinde alio dixit tu vero quantum 7. Then said he to another, And how
debes qui ait centum choros tritici ait much owest thou? And he said, An
illi accipe litteras tuas et scribe hundred measures of wheat. And he said
octoginta unto him, Take thy bill, and write
                                             fourscore.

16:8 et laudavit dominus vilicum 8. And the lord commended the unjust
iniquitatis quia prudenter fecisset steward, because he had done wisely:
quia filii huius saeculi prudentiores for the children of this world are in
filiis lucis in generatione sua sunt their generation wiser than the
                                             children of light.

16:9 et ego vobis dico facite vobis 9. And I say unto you, Make to
amicos de mamona iniquitatis ut cum yourselves friends of the mammon of
defeceritis recipiant vos in aeterna unrighteousness; that, when ye fail,
tabernacula they may receive you into everlasting
                                             habitations.

16:10 qui fidelis est in minimo et in 10. He that is faithful in that which
maiori fidelis est et qui in modico is least is faithful also in much: and
iniquus est et in maiori iniquus est he that is unjust in the least is
                                             unjust also in much.

16:11 si ergo in iniquo mamona fideles 11. If therefore ye have not been
non fuistis quod verum est quis credet faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who
vobis will commit to your trust the true
                                             riches?

16:12 et si in alieno fideles non 12. And if ye have not been faithful
fuistis quod vestrum est quis dabit in that which is another man's, who
vobis shall give you that which is your own?

16:13 nemo servus potest duobus 13. No servant can serve two masters:
dominis servire aut enim unum odiet et for either he will hate the one, and
alterum diliget aut uni adherebit et love the other; or else he will hold to
alterum contemnet non potestis Deo the one, and despise the other. Ye
servire et mamonae cannot serve God and mammon.

16:14 audiebant autem omnia haec 14. And the Pharisees also, who were
Pharisaei qui erant avari et deridebant covetous, heard all these things: and
illum they derided him.

16:15 et ait illis vos estis qui 15. And he said unto them, Ye are they
iustificatis vos coram hominibus Deus        which justify yourselves before men;
autem novit corda vestra quia quod but God knoweth your hearts: for that
hominibus altum est abominatio est ante which is highly esteemed among men is
Deum abomination in the sight of God.

16:16 lex et prophetae usque ad 16. The law and the prophets were
Iohannem ex eo regnum Dei evangelizatur until John: since that time the kingdom
et omnis in illud vim facit of God is preached, and every man
                                             presseth into it.

16:17 facilius est autem caelum et 17. And it is easier for heaven and
terram praeterire quam de lege unum earth to pass, than one tittle of the
apicem cadere law to fail.

16:18 omnis qui dimittit uxorem suam 18. Whosoever putteth away his wife,
et ducit alteram moechatur et qui and marrieth another, committeth
dimissam a viro ducit moechatur adultery: and whosoever marrieth her
that is put away from her husband
                                             committeth adultery.

16:19 homo quidam erat dives et 19. There was a certain rich man,
induebatur purpura et bysso et which was clothed in purple and fine
epulabatur cotidie splendide linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

16:20 et erat quidam mendicus nomine 20. And there was a certain beggar
Lazarus qui iacebat ad ianuam eius named Lazarus, which was laid at his
ulceribus plenus gate, full of sores,

16:21 cupiens saturari de micis quae 21. And desiring to be fed with the
cadebant de mensa divitis sed et canes crumbs which fell from the rich man's
veniebant et lingebant ulcera eius table: moreover the dogs came and
                                             licked his sores.

16:22 factum est autem ut moreretur 22. And it came to pass, that the
mendicus et portaretur ab angelis in beggar died, and was carried by the
sinum Abrahae mortuus est autem et angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich
dives et sepultus est in inferno             man also died, and was buried;

16:23 elevans oculos suos cum esset in 23. And in hell he lift up his eyes,
tormentis videbat Abraham a longe et being in torments, and seeth Abraham
Lazarum in sinu eius afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

16:24 et ipse clamans dixit pater 24. And he cried and said, Father
Abraham miserere mei et mitte Lazarum Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
ut intinguat extremum digiti sui in Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his
aqua ut refrigeret linguam meam quia         finger in water, and cool my tongue;
crucior in hac flamma for I am tormented in this flame.

16:25 et dixit illi Abraham fili 25. But Abraham said, Son, remember
recordare quia recepisti bona in vita that thou in thy lifetime receivedst
tua et Lazarus similiter mala nunc thy good things, and likewise Lazarus
autem hic consolatur tu vero cruciaris evil things: but now he is comforted,
                                             and thou art tormented.

16:26 et in his omnibus inter nos et 26. And beside all this, between us
vos chasma magnum firmatum est ut hii and you there is a great gulf fixed: so
qui volunt hinc transire ad vos non that they which would pass from hence
possint neque inde huc transmeare to you cannot; neither can they pass to
us, that would come from thence.

16:27 et ait rogo ergo te pater ut 27. Then he said, I pray thee
mittas eum in domum patris mei therefore, father, that thou wouldest
send him to my father's house:

16:28 habeo enim quinque fratres ut 28. For I have five brethren; that he
testetur illis ne et ipsi veniant in may testify unto them, lest they also
locum hunc tormentorum come into this place of torment.

16:29 et ait illi Abraham habent Mosen 29. Abraham saith unto him, They have
et prophetas audiant illos Moses and the prophets; let them hear
                                             them.

16:30 at ille dixit non pater Abraham 30. And he said, Nay, father Abraham:
sed si quis ex mortuis ierit ad eos but if one went unto them from the
paenitentiam agent dead, they will repent.

16:31 ait autem illi si Mosen et 31. And he said unto him, If they hear
prophetas non audiunt neque si quis ex not Moses and the prophets, neither
mortuis resurrexerit credent will they be persuaded, though one rose
                                             from the dead.
