2:1 factum est autem in diebus illis 1. And it came to pass in those days,
exiit edictum a Caesare Augusto ut that there went out a decree from
describeretur universus orbis Caesar Augustus that all the world
                                             should be taxed.

2:2 haec descriptio prima facta est 2. (And this taxing was first made
praeside Syriae Cyrino when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

2:3 et ibant omnes ut profiterentur 3. And all went to be taxed, every one
singuli in suam civitatem into his own city.

2:4 ascendit autem et Ioseph a 4. And Joseph also went up from
Galilaea de civitate Nazareth in Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth,
Iudaeam civitatem David into Judaea, unto the city of David,
quae vocatur Bethleem which is called Bethlehem; (because he
eo quod esset de domo et familia David was of the house and lineage of David:)

2:5 ut profiteretur cum Maria 5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused
desponsata sibi uxore praegnate wife, being great with child.

2:6 factum est autem cum essent ibi 6. And so it was, that, while they
impleti sunt dies ut pareret were there, the days were accomplished
                                             that she should be delivered.

2:7 et peperit filium suum 7. And she brought forth her firstborn
primogenitum et pannis eum involvit son, and wrapped him in swaddling
et reclinavit eum in praesepio               clothes, and laid him in a manger;
quia non erat eis locus in diversorio because there was no room for them in
                                             the inn.

2:8 et pastores erant in regione eadem 8. And there were in the same country
vigilantes et custodientes vigilias shepherds abiding in the field, keeping
noctis supra gregem suum watch over their flock by night.

2:9 et ecce angelus Domini stetit 9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came
iuxta illos upon them, and the glory of the Lord
et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos shone round about them: and they were
et timuerunt timore magno sore afraid.

2:10 et dixit illis angelus 10. And the angel said unto them, Fear
nolite timere ecce enim evangelizo vobis not: for, behold, I bring you good
gaudium magnum quod erit omni populo tidings of great joy, which shall be to
                                             all people.

2:11 quia natus est vobis hodie 11. For unto you is born this day in
salvator qui est Christus Dominus in the city of David a Saviour, which is
civitate David Christ the Lord.

2:12  et hoc vobis signum invenietis         12.  And this shall be a sign unto you;
infantem pannis involutum et positum in Ye shall find the babe wrapped in
praesepio swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

2:13 et subito facta est cum angelo 13. And suddenly there was with the
multitudo militiae caelestis angel a multitude of the heavenly host
laudantium Deum et dicentium praising God, and saying,

2:14 gloria in altissimis Deo et in 14. Glory to God in the highest, and
terra pax in hominibus bonae voluntatis on earth peace, good will toward men.

2:15 et factum est ut discesserunt ab 15. And it came to pass, as the angels
eis angeli in caelum were gone away from them into heaven,
pastores loquebantur ad invicem the shepherds said one to another, Let
transeamus usque Bethleem et videamus us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see
hoc verbum quod factum est this thing which is come to pass, which
quod fecit Dominus et ostendit nobis the Lord hath made known unto us.

2:16 et venerunt festinantes 16. And they came with haste, and
et invenerunt Mariam et Ioseph found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe
et infantem positum in praesepio lying in a manger.

2:17 videntes autem cognoverunt de verbo 17. And when they had seen it, they
quod dictum erat illis de puero hoc made known abroad the saying which was
                                             told them concerning this child.

2:18 et omnes qui audierunt mirati 18. And all they that heard it
sunt et de his quae dicta erant a wondered at those things which were
pastoribus ad ipsos told them by the shepherds.

2:19 Maria autem conservabat omnia 19. But Mary kept all these things,
verba haec conferens in corde suo and pondered them in her heart.

2:20 et reversi sunt pastores 20. And the shepherds returned,
glorificantes et laudantes Deum in glorifying and praising God for all the
omnibus quae audierant et viderant things that they had heard and seen, as
sicut dictum est ad illos it was told unto them.

2:21 et postquam consummati sunt dies 21. And when eight days were
octo ut circumcideretur vocatum est accomplished for the circumcising of
nomen eius Iesus quod vocatum est ab the child, his name was called JESUS,

he was conceived in the womb.

2:22 et postquam impleti sunt dies 22. And when the days of her
purgationis eius secundum legem Mosi purification according to the law of

2:24 et ut darent hostiam secundum 24. And to offer a sacrifice according

2:25 et ecce homo erat in Hierusalem 25. And, behold, there was a man in
cui nomen Symeon et homo iste iustus et Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and
timoratus expectans consolationem the same man was just and devout,
Israhel et Spiritus Sanctus erat in eo waiting for the consolation of Israel:
and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

2:26 et responsum acceperat ab Spiritu 26. And it was revealed unto him by
Sancto non visurum se mortem nisi prius the Holy Ghost, that he should not see
videret Christum Domini death, before he had seen the Lord's
                                             Christ.

2:27 et venit in Spiritu in templum et 27. And he came by the Spirit into the
cum inducerent puerum Iesum parentes temple: and when the parents brought in
eius ut facerent secundum consuetudinem the child Jesus, to do for him after
legis pro eo the custom of the law,

2:28 et ipse accepit eum in ulnas suas 28. Then took he him up in his arms,
et benedixit Deum et dixit and blessed God, and said,

2:29 nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine 29. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant
secundum verbum tuum in pace depart in peace, according to thy word:

2:30 quia viderunt oculi mei salutare 30. For mine eyes have seen thy
tuum salvation,

2:31 quod parasti ante faciem omnium 31. Which thou hast prepared before
populorum                                    the face of all people;

2:32 lumen ad revelationem gentium et 32. A light to lighten the Gentiles,
gloriam plebis tuae Israhel and the glory of thy people Israel.

2:33 et erat pater eius et mater 33. And Joseph and his mother
mirantes super his quae dicebantur de marvelled at those things which were
illo spoken of him.

2:34 et benedixit illis Symeon et 34. And Simeon blessed them, and said
dixit ad Mariam matrem eius ecce unto Mary his mother, Behold, this
positus est hic in ruinam et child is set for the fall and rising
resurrectionem multorum in Israhel et again of many in Israel; and for a sign
in signum cui contradicetur                  which shall be spoken against;

2:35 et tuam ipsius animam pertransiet 35. (Yea, a sword shall pierce through

cordibus cogitationes of many hearts may be revealed.

2:36 et erat Anna prophetissa filia 36. And there was one Anna, a

2:37 et haec vidua usque ad annos 37. And she was a widow of about
octoginta quattuor quae non discedebat fourscore and four years, which

serviens nocte ac die served God with fastings and prayers
                                             night and day.

2:38 et haec ipsa hora superveniens 38. And she coming in that instant
