11:1 et factum est cum esset in loco 1. And it came to pass, that, as he
quodam orans ut cessavit dixit unus ex was praying in a certain place, when he
discipulis eius ad eum Domine doce nos ceased, one of his disciples said unto
orare sicut et Iohannes docuit him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John
discipulos suos also taught his disciples.
11:2 et ait illis cum oratis dicite 2. And he said unto them, When ye
Pater sanctificetur nomen tuum adveniat pray, say, Our Father which art in
regnum tuum heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in
heaven, so in earth.
11:3 panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis 3. Give us day by day our daily bread.
cotidie
11:4 et dimitte nobis peccata nostra 4. And forgive us our sins; for we
siquidem et ipsi dimittimus omni also forgive every one that is indebted
debenti nobis et ne nos inducas in to us. And lead us not into temptation;
temptationem but deliver us from evil.
11:5 et ait ad illos quis vestrum 5. And he said unto them, Which of you
habebit amicum et ibit ad illum media shall have a friend, and shall go unto
nocte et dicit illi amice commoda mihi him at midnight, and say unto him,
tres panes Friend, lend me three loaves;
11:6 quoniam amicus meus venit de via 6. For a friend of mine in his journey
ad me et non habeo quod ponam ante illum is come to me, and I have nothing to
set before him?
11:7 et ille de intus respondens dicat 7. And he from within shall answer and
noli mihi molestus esse iam ostium say, Trouble me not: the door is now
clausum est et pueri mei mecum sunt in shut, and my children are with me in
cubili non possum surgere et dare tibi bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
11:8 dico vobis et si non dabit illi 8. I say unto you, Though he will not
surgens eo quod amicus eius sit propter rise and give him, because he is his
inprobitatem tamen eius surget et dabit friend, yet because of his importunity
illi quotquot habet necessarios he will rise and give him as many as he
needeth.
11:9 et ego vobis dico petite et 9. And I say unto you, Ask, and it
dabitur vobis quaerite et invenietis shall be given you; seek, and ye shall
pulsate et aperietur vobis find; knock, and it shall be opened
unto you.
11:10 omnis enim qui petit accipit et 10. For every one that asketh
qui quaerit invenit et pulsanti receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth;
aperietur and to him that knocketh it shall be
opened.
11:11 quis autem ex vobis patrem petet 11. If a son shall ask bread of any of
panem numquid lapidem dabit illi aut you that is a father, will he give him
piscem numquid pro pisce serpentem a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he
dabit illi for a fish give him a serpent?
11:12 aut si petierit ovum numquid 12. Or if he shall ask an egg, will he
porriget illi scorpionem offer him a scorpion?
11:13 si ergo vos cum sitis mali 13. If ye then, being evil, know how
nostis bona data dare filiis vestris to give good gifts unto your children:
quanto magis Pater vester de caelo how much more shall your heavenly
dabit spiritum bonum petentibus se Father give the Holy Spirit to them
that ask him?
11:14 et erat eiciens daemonium et 14. And he was casting out a devil,
illud erat mutum et cum eiecisset and it was dumb. And it came to pass,
daemonium locutus est mutus et when the devil was gone out, the dumb
admiratae sunt turbae spake; and the people wondered.
11:15 quidam autem ex eis dixerunt in 15. But some of them said, He casteth
Beelzebub principe daemoniorum eicit out devils through Beelzebub the chief
daemonia of the devils.
11:16 et alii temptantes signum de 16. And others, tempting him, sought
caelo quaerebant ab eo of him a sign from heaven.
11:17 ipse autem ut vidit cogitationes 17. But he, knowing their thoughts,
eorum dixit eis omne regnum in se ipsum said unto them, Every kingdom divided
divisum desolatur et domus supra domum against itself is brought to
cadet desolation; and a house divided against
a house falleth.
11:18 si autem et Satanas in se ipsum 18. If Satan also be divided against
divisus est quomodo stabit regnum himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
ipsius quia dicitis in Beelzebub eicere because ye say that I cast out devils
me daemonia through Beelzebub.
11:19 si autem ego in Beelzebub eicio 19. And if I by Beelzebub cast out
daemonia filii vestri in quo eiciunt devils, by whom do your sons cast them
ideo ipsi iudices vestri erunt out? therefore shall they be your
judges.
11:20 porro si in digito Dei eicio 20. But if I with the finger of God
daemonia profecto praevenit in vos cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom
regnum Dei of God is come upon you.
11:21 cum fortis armatus custodit 21. When a strong man armed keepeth
atrium suum in pace sunt ea quae his palace, his goods are in peace:
possidet
11:22 si autem fortior illo 22. But when a stronger than he shall
superveniens vicerit eum universa arma come upon him, and overcome him, he
eius aufert in quibus confidebat et taketh from him all his armour wherein
spolia eius distribuit he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
11:23 qui non est mecum adversum me 23. He that is not with me is against
est et qui non colligit mecum dispergit me: and he that gathereth not with me
scattereth.
11:24 cum inmundus spiritus exierit de 24. When the unclean spirit is gone
homine perambulat per loca inaquosa out of a man, he walketh through dry
quaerens requiem et non inveniens dicit places, seeking rest; and finding none,
revertar in domum meam unde exivi he saith, I will return unto my house
whence I came out.
11:25 et cum venerit invenit scopis 25. And when he cometh, he findeth it
mundatam swept and garnished.
11:26 et tunc vadit et adsumit septem 26. Then goeth he, and taketh to him
alios spiritus nequiores se et ingressi seven other spirits more wicked than
habitant ibi et sunt novissima hominis himself; and they enter in, and dwell
illius peiora prioribus there: and the last state of that man
is worse than the first.
11:27 factum est autem cum haec 27. And it came to pass, as he spake
diceret extollens vocem quaedam mulier these things, a certain woman of the
de turba dixit illi beatus venter qui company lifted up her voice, and said
te portavit et ubera quae suxisti unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare
thee, and the paps which thou hast
sucked.
11:28 at ille dixit quippini beati qui 28. But he said, Yea rather, blessed
audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt are they that hear the word of God, and
keep it.
11:29 turbis autem concurrentibus 29. And when the people were gathered
coepit dicere generatio haec generatio thick together, he began to say, This
nequam est signum quaerit et signum non is an evil generation: they seek a
dabitur illi nisi signum Ionae sign; and there shall no sign be given
it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
11:30 nam sicut Ionas fuit signum 30. For as Jonas was a sign unto the
Ninevitis ita erit et Filius hominis Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man
generationi isti be to this generation.
11:31 regina austri surget in iudicio 31. The queen of the south shall rise
cum viris generationis huius et up in the judgment with the men of this
condemnabit illos quia venit a finibus generation, and condemn them: for she
terrae audire sapientiam Salomonis et came from the utmost parts of the earth
ecce plus Salomone hic to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and,
behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
11:32 viri ninevitae surgent in 32. The men of Nineve shall rise up in
iudicio cum generatione hac et the judgment with this generation, and
condemnabunt illam quia paenitentiam shall condemn it: for they repented at
egerunt ad praedicationem Ionae et ecce the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a
plus Iona hic greater than Jonas is here.
11:33 nemo lucernam accendit et in 33. No man, when he hath lighted a
abscondito ponit neque sub modio sed candle, putteth it in a secret place,
supra candelabrum ut qui ingrediuntur neither under a bushel, but on a
lumen videant candlestick, that they which come in
may see the light.
11:34 lucerna corporis tui est oculus 34. The light of the body is the eye:
tuus si oculus tuus fuerit simplex therefore when thine eye is single, thy
totum corpus tuum lucidum erit si autem whole body also is full of light; but
nequam fuerit etiam corpus tuum when thine eye is evil, thy body also
tenebrosum erit is full of darkness.
11:35 vide ergo ne lumen quod in te 35. Take heed therefore that the light
est tenebrae sint which is in thee be not darkness.
11:36 si ergo corpus tuum totum 36. If thy whole body therefore be
lucidum fuerit non habens aliquam full of light, having no part dark, the
partem tenebrarum erit lucidum totum et whole shall be full of light, as when
sicut lucerna fulgoris inluminabit te the bright shining of a candle doth
give thee light.
11:37 et cum loqueretur rogavit illum 37. And as he spake, a certain
quidam Pharisaeus ut pranderet apud se Pharisee besought him to dine with him:
et ingressus recubuit and he went in, and sat down to meat.
11:38 Pharisaeus autem coepit intra se 38. And when the Pharisee saw it, he
reputans dicere quare non baptizatus marvelled that he had not first washed
esset ante prandium before dinner.
11:39 et ait Dominus ad illum nunc vos 39. And the Lord said unto him, Now do
Pharisaei quod de foris est calicis et ye Pharisees make clean the outside of
catini mundatis quod autem intus est the cup and the platter; but your
vestrum plenum est rapina et iniquitate inward part is full of ravening and
wickedness.
11:40 stulti nonne qui fecit quod de 40. Ye fools, did not he that made
foris est etiam id quod de intus est that which is without make that which
fecit is within also?
11:41 verumtamen quod superest date 41. But rather give alms of such
elemosynam et ecce omnia munda sunt things as ye have; and, behold, all
vobis things are clean unto you.
11:42 sed vae vobis Pharisaeis quia 42. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for
decimatis mentam et rutam et omne holus ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of
et praeteritis iudicium et caritatem herbs, and pass over judgment and the
Dei haec autem oportuit facere et illa love of God: these ought ye to have
non omittere done, and not to leave the other undone.
11:43 vae vobis Pharisaeis quia 43. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye
diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis love the uppermost seats in the
et salutationes in foro synagogues, and greetings in the
markets.
11:44 vae vobis quia estis ut 44. Woe unto you, scribes and
monumenta quae non parent et homines Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as
ambulantes supra nesciunt graves which appear not, and the men
that walk over them are not aware of
them.
11:45 respondens autem quidam ex legis 45. Then answered one of the lawyers,
peritis ait illi magister haec dicens and said unto him, Master, thus saying
etiam nobis contumeliam facis thou reproachest us also.
11:46 at ille ait et vobis legis 46. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye
peritis vae quia oneratis homines lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens
oneribus quae portari non possunt et grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves
ipsi uno digito vestro non tangitis touch not the burdens with one of your
sarcinas fingers.
11:47 vae vobis quia aedificatis 47. Woe unto you! for ye build the
monumenta prophetarum patres autem sepulchres of the prophets, and your
vestri occiderunt illos fathers killed them.
11:48 profecto testificamini quod 48. Truly ye bear witness that ye
consentitis operibus patrum vestrorum allow the deeds of your fathers: for
quoniam quidem ipsi eos occiderunt vos they indeed killed them, and ye build
autem aedificatis eorum sepulchra their sepulchres.
11:49 propterea et sapientia Dei dixit 49. Therefore also said the wisdom of
mittam ad illos prophetas et apostolos God, I will send them prophets and
et ex illis occident et persequentur apostles, and some of them they shall
slay and persecute:
11:50 ut inquiratur sanguis omnium 50. That the blood of all the
prophetarum qui effusus est a prophets, which was shed from the
constitutione mundi a generatione ista foundation of the world, may be
required of this generation;
11:51 a sanguine Abel usque ad 51. From the blood of Abel unto the
sanguinem Zacchariae qui periit inter blood of Zacharias which perished
altare et aedem ita dico vobis between the altar and the temple:
requiretur ab hac generatione verily I say unto you, It shall be
required of this generation.
11:52 vae vobis legis peritis quia 52. Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have
tulistis clavem scientiae ipsi non taken away the key of knowledge: ye
introistis et eos qui introibant entered not in yourselves, and them
prohibuistis that were entering in ye hindered.
11:53 cum haec ad illos diceret 53. And as he said these things unto
coeperunt Pharisaei et legis periti them, the scribes and the Pharisees
graviter insistere et os eius opprimere began to urge him vehemently, and to
de multis provoke him to speak of many things:
11:54 insidiantes et quaerentes capere 54. Laying wait for him, and seeking
aliquid ex ore eius ut accusarent eum to catch something out of his mouth,
that they might accuse him.
