12:1 in illo tempore abiit Iesus 1. At that time Jesus went on the
sabbato per sata discipuli autem eius sabbath day through the corn; and his
esurientes coeperunt vellere spicas et disciples were an hungred, and began to
manducare pluck the ears of corn and to eat.
12:2 Pharisaei autem videntes dixerunt 2. But when the Pharisees saw it, they
ei ecce discipuli tui faciunt quod non said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do
licet eis facere sabbatis that which is not lawful to do upon the
sabbath day.
12:3 at ille dixit eis non legistis 3. But he said unto them, Have ye not
quid fecerit David quando esuriit et read what David did, when he was an
qui cum eo erant hungred, and they that were with him;
12:4 quomodo intravit in domum Dei et 4. How he entered into the house of
panes propositionis comedit quos non God, and did eat the shewbread, which
licebat ei edere neque his qui cum eo was not lawful for him to eat, neither
erant nisi solis sacerdotibus for them which were with him, but only
for the priests?
12:5 aut non legistis in lege quia 5. Or have ye not read in the law, how
sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum that on the sabbath days the priests in
violant et sine crimine sunt the temple profane the sabbath, and are
blameless?
12:6 dico autem vobis quia templo maior 6. But I say unto you, That in this
est hic place is one greater than the temple.
12:7 si autem sciretis quid est 7. But if ye had known what this
misericordiam volo et non sacrificium meaneth, I will have mercy, and not
numquam condemnassetis innocentes sacrifice, ye would not have condemned
the guiltless.
12:8 dominus est enim Filius hominis 8. For the Son of man is Lord even of
etiam sabbati the sabbath day.
12:9 et cum inde transisset venit in 9. And when he was departed thence, he
synagogam eorum went into their synagogue:
12:10 et ecce homo manum habens aridam 10. And, behold, there was a man which
et interrogabant eum dicentes si licet had his hand withered. And they asked
sabbatis curare ut accusarent eum him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on
the sabbath days? that they might
accuse him.
12:11 ipse autem dixit illis quis erit 11. And he said unto them, What man
ex vobis homo qui habeat ovem unam et shall there be among you, that shall
si ceciderit haec sabbatis in foveam have one sheep, and if it fall into a
nonne tenebit et levabit eam pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay
hold on it, and lift it out?
12:12 quanto magis melior est homo ove 12. How much then is a man better than
itaque licet sabbatis benefacere a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do
well on the sabbath days.
12:13 tunc ait homini extende manum 13. Then saith he to the man, Stretch
tuam et extendit et restituta est forth thine hand. And he stretched it
sanitati sicut altera forth; and it was restored whole, like
as the other.
12:14 exeuntes autem Pharisaei 14. Then the Pharisees went out, and
consilium faciebant adversus eum held a council against him, how they
quomodo eum perderent might destroy him.
12:15 Iesus autem sciens recessit inde 15. But when Jesus knew it, he
et secuti sunt eum multi et curavit eos withdrew himself from thence: and great
omnes multitudes followed him, and he healed
them all;
12:16 et praecepit eis ne manifestum 16. And charged them that they should
eum facerent not make him known:
12:17 ut adimpleretur quod dictum est 17. That it might be fulfilled which
per Esaiam prophetam dicentem was spoken by Esaias the prophet,
saying,
12:18 ecce puer meus quem elegi 18. Behold my servant, whom I have
dilectus meus in quo bene placuit chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is
animae meae ponam spiritum meum super well pleased: I will put my spirit upon
eum et iudicium gentibus nuntiabit him, and he shall shew judgment to the
Gentiles.
12:19 non contendet neque clamabit 19. He shall not strive, nor cry;
neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem neither shall any man hear his voice in
eius the streets.
12:20 harundinem quassatam non 20. A bruised reed shall he not break,
confringet et linum fumigans non and smoking flax shall he not quench,
extinguet donec eiciat ad victoriam till he send forth judgment unto
iudicium victory.
12:21 et in nomine eius gentes sperabunt 21. And in his name shall the Gentiles
trust.
12:22 tunc oblatus est ei daemonium 22. Then was brought unto him one
habens caecus et mutus et curavit eum possessed with a devil, blind, and
ita ut loqueretur et videret dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that
the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
12:23 et stupebant omnes turbae et 23. And all the people were amazed,
dicebant numquid hic est Filius David and said, Is not this the son of David?
12:24 Pharisaei autem audientes 24. But when the Pharisees heard it,
dixerunt hic non eicit daemones nisi in they said, This fellow doth not cast
Beelzebub principe daemoniorum out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince
of the devils.
12:25 Iesus autem sciens cogitationes 25. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and
eorum dixit eis omne regnum divisum said unto them, Every kingdom divided
contra se desolatur et omnis civitas against itself is brought to
vel domus divisa contra se non stabit desolation; and every city or house
divided against itself shall not stand:
12:26 et si Satanas Satanan eicit 26. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is
adversus se divisus est quomodo ergo divided against himself; how shall then
stabit regnum eius his kingdom stand?
12:27 et si ego in Beelzebub eicio 27. And if I by Beelzebub cast out
daemones filii vestri in quo eiciunt devils, by whom do your children cast
ideo ipsi iudices erunt vestri them out? therefore they shall be your
judges.
12:28 si autem ego in Spiritu Dei eicio 28. But if I cast out devils by the
daemones igitur pervenit in vos regnum Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God
Dei is come unto you.
12:29 aut quomodo potest quisquam 29. Or else how can one enter into a
intrare in domum fortis et vasa eius strong man's house, and spoil his
diripere nisi prius alligaverit fortem goods, except he first bind the strong
et tunc domum illius diripiat man? and then he will spoil his house.
12:30 qui non est mecum contra me est 30. He that is not with me is against
et qui non congregat mecum spargit me; and he that gathereth not with me
scattereth abroad.
12:31 ideo dico vobis omne peccatum et 31. Wherefore I say unto you, All
blasphemia remittetur hominibus manner of sin and blasphemy shall be
Spiritus autem blasphemia non remittetur forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy
against the Holy Ghost shall not be
forgiven unto men.
12:32 et quicumque dixerit verbum 32. And whosoever speaketh a word
contra Filium hominis remittetur ei qui against the Son of man, it shall be
autem dixerit contra Spiritum Sanctum forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh
non remittetur ei neque in hoc saeculo against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be
neque in futuro forgiven him, neither in this world,
neither in the world to come.
12:33 aut facite arborem bonam et 33. Either make the tree good, and his
fructum eius bonum aut facite arborem fruit good; or else make the tree
malam et fructum eius malum siquidem ex corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the
fructu arbor agnoscitur tree is known by his fruit.
12:34 progenies viperarum quomodo 34. O generation of vipers, how can
potestis bona loqui cum sitis mali ex ye, being evil, speak good things? for
abundantia enim cordis os loquitur out of the abundance of the heart the
mouth speaketh.
12:35 bonus homo de bono thesauro 35. A good man out of the good
profert bona et malus homo de malo treasure of the heart bringeth forth
thesauro profert mala good things: and an evil man out of the
evil treasure bringeth forth evil
things.
12:36 dico autem vobis quoniam omne 36. But I say unto you, That every
verbum otiosum quod locuti fuerint idle word that men shall speak, they
homines reddent rationem de eo in die shall give account thereof in the day
iudicii of judgment.
12:37 ex verbis enim tuis 37. For by thy words thou shalt be
iustificaberis et ex verbis tuis justified, and by thy words thou shalt
condemnaberis be condemned.
12:38 tunc responderunt ei quidam de 38. Then certain of the scribes and of
scribis et Pharisaeis dicentes magister the Pharisees answered, saying, Master,
volumus a te signum videre we would see a sign from thee.
12:39 qui respondens ait illis 39. But he answered and said unto
generatio mala et adultera signum them, An evil and adulterous generation
quaerit et signum non dabitur ei nisi seeketh after a sign; and there shall
signum Ionae prophetae no sign be given to it, but the sign of
the prophet Jonas:
12:40 sicut enim fuit Ionas in ventre 40. For as Jonas was three days and
ceti tribus diebus et tribus noctibus three nights in the whale's belly; so
sic erit Filius hominis in corde terrae shall the Son of man be three days and
tribus diebus et tribus noctibus three nights in the heart of the earth.
12:41 viri ninevitae surgent in iudicio 41. The men of Nineveh shall rise in
cum generatione ista et condemnabunt judgment with this generation, and
eam quia paenitentiam egerunt in shall condemn it: because they repented
praedicatione Ionae et ecce plus quam at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold,
Iona hic a greater than Jonas is here.
12:42 regina austri surget in iudicio 42. The queen of the south shall rise
cum generatione ista et condemnabit eam up in the judgment with this
quia venit a finibus terrae audire generation, and shall condemn it: for
sapientiam Salomonis et ecce plus quam she came from the uttermost parts of
Salomon hic the earth to hear the wisdom of
Solomon; and, behold, a greater than
Solomon is here.
12:43 cum autem inmundus spiritus 43. When the unclean spirit is gone
exierit ab homine ambulat per loca out of a man, he walketh through dry
arida quaerens requiem et non invenit places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
12:44 tunc dicit revertar in domum meam 44. Then he saith, I will return into
unde exivi et veniens invenit vacantem my house from whence I came out; and
scopis mundatam et ornatam when he is come, he findeth it empty,
swept, and garnished.
12:45 tunc vadit et adsumit septem 45. Then goeth he, and taketh with
alios spiritus secum nequiores se et himself seven other spirits more wicked
intrantes habitant ibi et fiunt than himself, and they enter in and
novissima hominis illius peiora dwell there: and the last state of that
prioribus sic erit et generationi huic man is worse than the first. Even so
pessimae shall it be also unto this wicked
generation.
12:46 adhuc eo loquente ad turbas ecce 46. While he yet talked to the people,
mater eius et fratres stabant foris behold, his mother and his brethren
quaerentes loqui ei stood without, desiring to speak with
him.
12:47 dixit autem ei quidam ecce mater 47. Then one said unto him, Behold,
tua et fratres tui foris stant thy mother and thy brethren stand
quaerentes te without, desiring to speak with thee.
12:48 at ipse respondens dicenti sibi 48. But he answered and said unto him
ait quae est mater mea et qui sunt that told him, Who is my mother? and
fratres mei who are my brethren?
12:49 et extendens manum in discipulos 49. And he stretched forth his hand
suos dixit ecce mater mea et fratres mei toward his disciples, and said, Behold
my mother and my brethren!
12:50 quicumque enim fecerit voluntatem 50. For whosoever shall do the will of
Patris mei qui in caelis est ipse meus my Father which is in heaven, the same
et frater et soror et mater est is my brother, and sister, and mother.
