In those days came John the Iohannes Baptista praedicans in deserto Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Iudaeae Judaea, 3:2 et dicens paenitentiam agite 2. And saying, Repent ye: for the adpropinquavit enim regnum caelorum kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3:3 hic est enim qui dictus est per 3. For this is he that was spoken of Esaiam prophetam dicentem vox clamantis by the prophet Esaias, saying, The in deserto parate viam Domini rectas voice of one crying in the wilderness, facite semitas eius Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 3:4 ipse autem Iohannes habebat 4. And the same John had his raiment vestimentum de pilis camelorum et zonam of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle pelliciam circa lumbos suos esca autem about his loins; and his meat was eius erat lucustae et mel silvestre locusts and wild honey. 3:5 tunc exiebat ad eum Hierosolyma et 5. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and omnis Iudaea et omnis regio circa all Judaea, and all the region round Iordanen about Jordan, 3:6 et baptizabantur in Iordane ab eo 6. And were baptized of him in Jordan, confitentes peccata sua confessing their sins. 3:7 videns autem multos Pharisaeorum et 7. But when he saw many of the Sadducaeorum venientes ad baptismum Pharisees and Sadducees come to his suum dixit eis progenies viperarum quis baptism, he said unto them, O demonstravit vobis fugere a futura ira generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 3:8 facite ergo fructum dignum 8. Bring forth therefore fruits meet paenitentiae for repentance: 3:9 et ne velitis dicere intra vos 9. And think not to say within patrem habemus Abraham dico enim vobis yourselves, We have Abraham to our quoniam potest Deus de lapidibus istis father: for I say unto you, that God is suscitare filios Abrahae able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 3:10 iam enim securis ad radicem 10. And now also the axe is laid unto arborum posita est omnis ergo arbor the root of the trees: therefore every quae non facit fructum bonum exciditur tree which bringeth not forth good et in ignem mittitur fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 3:11 ego quidem vos baptizo in aqua in 11. I indeed baptize you with water paenitentiam qui autem post me venturus unto repentance. but he that cometh est fortior me est cuius non sum dignus after me is mightier than I, whose calciamenta portare ipse vos baptizabit shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall in Spiritu Sancto et igni baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 3:12 cuius ventilabrum in manu sua et 12. Whose fan is in his hand, and he permundabit aream suam et congregabit will throughly purge his floor, and triticum suum in horreum paleas autem gather his wheat into the garner; but conburet igni inextinguibili he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 3:13 tunc venit Iesus a Galilaea in 13. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Iordanen ad Iohannem ut baptizaretur ab Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. eo 3:14 Iohannes autem prohibebat eum 14. But John forbad him, saying, I dicens ego a te debeo baptizari et tu have need to be baptized of thee, and venis ad me comest thou to me? 3:15 respondens autem Iesus dixit ei 15. And Jesus answering said unto him, sine modo sic enim decet nos implere Suffer it to be so now: for thus it omnem iustitiam tunc dimisit eum becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 3:16 baptizatus autem confestim 16. And Jesus, when he was baptized, ascendit de aqua et ecce aperti sunt ei went up straightway out of the water: caeli et vidit Spiritum Dei and, lo, the heavens were opened unto descendentem sicut columbam venientem him, and he saw the Spirit of God super se descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 3:17 et ecce vox de caelis dicens hic 17. And lo a voice from heaven, est Filius meus dilectus in quo mihi saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom conplacui I am well pleased. |
