27:7 consilio autem inito emerunt ex 7. And they took counsel, and bought
illis agrum figuli in sepulturam with them the potter's field, to bury
peregrinorum strangers in.

27:8 propter hoc vocatus est ager ille 8. Wherefore that field was called,
Acheldemach ager sanguinis usque in The field of blood, unto this day.
hodiernum diem

27:9 tunc impletum est quod dictum est 9. Then was fulfilled that which was
per Hieremiam prophetam dicentem et spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
acceperunt triginta argenteos pretium And they took the thirty pieces of
adpretiati quem adpretiaverunt a filiis silver, the price of him that was
Israhel valued, whom they of the children of
                                             Israel did value;

27:10 et dederunt eos in agrum figuli 10. And gave them for the potter's
sicut constituit mihi Dominus field, as the Lord appointed me.

27:11 Iesus autem stetit ante praesidem 11. And Jesus stood before the
et interrogavit eum praeses dicens tu governor: and the governor asked him,
es rex Iudaeorum dicit ei Iesus tu dicis saying, Art thou the King of the Jews?
And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

27:12 et cum accusaretur a principibus 12. And when he was accused of the
sacerdotum et senioribus nihil respondit chief priests and elders, he answered
                                             nothing.

27:13 tunc dicit illi Pilatus non audis 13. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest
quanta adversum te dicant testimonia thou not how many things they witness
                                             against thee?

27:14 et non respondit ei ad ullum 14. And he answered him to never a
verbum ita ut miraretur praeses word; insomuch that the governor
vehementer marvelled greatly.

27:15 per diem autem sollemnem 15. Now at that feast the governor was
consueverat praeses dimittere populo wont to release unto the people a
unum vinctum quem voluissent prisoner, whom they would.

27:16 habebat autem tunc vinctum 16. And they had then a notable
insignem qui dicebatur Barabbas prisoner, called Barabbas.

27:17 congregatis ergo illis dixit 17. Therefore when they were gathered
Pilatus quem vultis dimittam vobis together, Pilate said unto them, Whom
Barabban an Iesum qui dicitur Christus will ye that I release unto you?
Barabbas, or Jesus which is called
                                             Christ?

27:18 sciebat enim quod per invidiam 18. For he knew that for envy they had
tradidissent eum delivered him.

27:19 sedente autem illo pro tribunali 19. When he was set down on the

tibi et iusto illi multa enim passa sum saying, Have thou nothing to do with
hodie per visum propter eum that just man: for I have suffered many
things this day in a dream because of
                                             him.

27:20 princeps autem sacerdotum et 20. But the chief priests and elders
seniores persuaserunt populis ut persuaded the multitude that they
peterent Barabban Iesum vero perderent should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

27:21 respondens autem praeses ait 21. The governor answered and said
illis quem vultis vobis de duobus unto them, Whether of the twain will ye
dimitti at illi dixerunt Barabban that I release unto you? They said,
                                             Barabbas.

27:22 dicit illis Pilatus quid igitur 22. Pilate saith unto them, What shall
faciam de Iesu qui dicitur Christus I do then with Jesus which is called
Christ? They all say unto him, Let him
                                             be crucified.

27:23 dicunt omnes crucifigatur ait 23. And the governor said, Why, what
illis praeses quid enim mali fecit at evil hath he done? But they cried out
illi magis clamabant dicentes the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
crucifigatur

27:24 videns autem Pilatus quia nihil 24. When Pilate saw that he could
proficeret sed magis tumultus fieret prevail nothing, but that rather a
accepta aqua lavit manus coram populo tumult was made, he took water, and
dicens innocens ego sum a sanguine washed his hands before the multitude,
iusti huius vos videritis saying, I am innocent of the blood of
this just person: see ye to it.

27:25 et respondens universus populus 25. Then answered all the people, and
dixit sanguis eius super nos et super said, His blood be on us, and on our
filios nostros children.

27:26 tunc dimisit illis Barabban Iesum 26. Then released he Barabbas unto
autem flagellatum tradidit eis ut them: and when he had scourged Jesus,
crucifigeretur he delivered him to be crucified.

27:27 tunc milites praesidis 27. Then the soldiers of the governor
suscipientes Iesum in praetorio took Jesus into the common hall, and
congregaverunt ad eum universam cohortem gathered unto him the whole band of
                                             soldiers.

27:28 et exuentes eum clamydem 28. And they stripped him, and put on
coccineam circumdederunt ei him a scarlet robe.

27:29 et plectentes coronam de spinis 29. And when they had platted a crown
posuerunt super caput eius et of thorns, they put it upon his head,
harundinem in dextera eius et genu and a reed in his right hand: and they
flexo ante eum inludebant dicentes have bowed the knee before him, and mocked
rex Iudaeorum him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

27:30 et expuentes in eum acceperunt 30. And they spit upon him, and took
harundinem et percutiebant caput eius the reed, and smote him on the head.

27:31 et postquam inluserunt ei 31. And after that they had mocked
exuerunt eum clamydem et induerunt eum him, they took the robe off from him,
vestimentis eius et duxerunt eum ut and put his own raiment on him, and led
crucifigerent him away to crucify him.

27:32 exeuntes autem invenerunt hominem 32. And as they came out, they found a
cyreneum nomine Simonem hunc man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they
angariaverunt ut tolleret crucem eius compelled to bear his cross.

27:33 et venerunt in locum qui dicitur 33. And when they were come unto a
Golgotha quod est Calvariae locus place called Golgotha, that is to say,
                                             a place of a skull,

27:34 et dederunt ei vinum bibere cum 34. They gave him vinegar to drink
felle mixtum et cum gustasset noluit mingled with gall: and when he had
bibere tasted thereof, he would not drink.

27:35 postquam autem crucifixerunt eum 35. And they crucified him, and parted
diviserunt vestimenta eius sortem his garments, casting lots: that it

the prophet, They parted my garments
among them, and upon my vesture did

27:36 et sedentes servabant eum 36. And sitting down they watched him
                                             there;

audientes dicebant Heliam vocat iste when they heard that, said, This man
                                             calleth for Elias.

27:48 et continuo currens unus ex eis 48. And straightway one of them ran,
acceptam spongiam implevit aceto et and took a spunge, and filled it with
inposuit harundini et dabat ei bibere vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave
                                             him to drink.

27:49 ceteri vero dicebant sine 49. The rest said, Let be, let us see
videamus an veniat Helias liberans eum whether Elias will come to save him.

27:50 Iesus autem iterum clamans voce 50. Jesus, when he had cried again
magna emisit spiritum with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

27:51 et ecce velum templi scissum est 51. And, behold, the veil of the
in duas partes a summo usque deorsum et temple was rent in twain from the top
terra mota est et petrae scissae sunt to the bottom; and the earth did quake,
                                             and the rocks rent;

27:52 et monumenta aperta sunt et multa 52. And the graves were opened; and
corpora sanctorum qui dormierant many bodies of the saints which slept
surrexerunt arose,

27:53 et exeuntes de monumentis post 53. And came out of the graves after
resurrectionem eius venerunt in sanctam his resurrection, and went into the
civitatem et apparuerunt multis holy city, and appeared unto many.

27:54 centurio autem et qui cum eo 54. Now when the centurion, and they
erant custodientes Iesum viso that were with him, watching Jesus, saw
terraemotu et his quae fiebant the earthquake, and those things that
timuerunt valde dicentes vere Dei were done, they feared greatly, saying,
Filius erat iste Truly this was the Son of God.

27:55 erant autem ibi mulieres multae a 55. And many women were there
longe quae secutae erant Iesum a beholding afar off, which followed
Galilaea ministrantes ei Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto
                                             him:

27:56 inter quas erat Maria Magdalene 56. Among which was Mary Magdalene,
et Maria Iacobi et Ioseph mater et and Mary the mother of James and Joses,
mater filiorum Zebedaei and the mother of Zebedees children.

27:57 cum sero autem factum esset venit 57. When the even was come, there came
quidam homo dives ab Arimathia nomine a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph,
Ioseph qui et ipse discipulus erat Iesu who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

27:58 hic accessit ad Pilatum et petiit 58. He went to Pilate, and begged the
corpus Iesu tunc Pilatus iussit reddi body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded
corpus the body to be delivered.

27:59 et accepto corpore Ioseph 59. And when Joseph had taken the
involvit illud sindone munda body, he wrapped it in a clean linen
                                             cloth,

27:60 et posuit illud in monumento suo 60. And laid it in his own new tomb,
novo quod exciderat in petra et which he had hewn out in the rock: and
advolvit saxum magnum ad ostium he rolled a great stone to the door of
monumenti et abiit the sepulchre, and departed.

27:61 erat autem ibi Maria Magdalene et 61. And there was Mary Magdalene, and
altera Maria sedentes contra sepulchrum the other Mary, sitting over against
                                             the sepulchre.

27:62 altera autem die quae est post 62. Now the next day, that followed
parasceven convenerunt principes the day of the preparation, the chief
sacerdotum et Pharisaei ad Pilatum priests and Pharisees came together
                                             unto Pilate,

27:63 dicentes domine recordati sumus 63. Saying, Sir, we remember that that
quia seductor ille dixit adhuc vivens deceiver said, while he was yet alive,
post tres dies resurgam After three days I will rise again.

27:64 iube ergo custodiri sepulchrum 64. Command therefore that the
usque in diem tertium ne forte veniant sepulchre be made sure until the third
discipuli eius et furentur eum et day, lest his disciples come by night,
dicant plebi surrexit a mortuis et erit and steal him away, and say unto the
novissimus error peior priore people, He is risen from the dead: so
the last error shall be worse than the
                                             first.

27:65 ait illis Pilatus habetis 65. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a
custodiam ite custodite sicut scitis watch: go your way, make it as sure as
                                             ye can.

27:66 illi autem abeuntes munierunt 66. So they went, and made the
sepulchrum signantes lapidem cum sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and
custodibus setting a watch.
