16:1 et accesserunt ad eum Pharisaei et 1. The Pharisees also with the
Sadducaei temptantes et rogaverunt eum Sadducees came, and tempting desired
ut signum de caelo ostenderet eis him that he would shew them a sign from
                                             heaven.

16:2 at ille respondens ait eis facto 2. He answered and said unto them,
vespere dicitis serenum erit rubicundum When it is evening, ye say, It will be
est enim caelum fair weather: for the sky is red.

16:3 et mane hodie tempestas rutilat 3. And in the morning, It will be foul
enim triste caelum weather to day: for the sky is red and
lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can
discern the face of the sky; but can ye
not discern the signs of the times?

16:4 faciem ergo caeli diiudicare 4. A wicked and adulterous generation

potestis generatio mala et adultera no sign be given unto it, but the sign
signum quaerit et signum non dabitur ei of the prophet Jonas. And he left them,
nisi signum Ionae et relictis illis and departed.
abiit

16:5 et cum venissent discipuli eius 5. And when his disciples were come to
trans fretum obliti sunt panes accipere the other side, they had forgotten to
                                             take bread.

16:6 qui dixit illis intuemini et 6. Then Jesus said unto them, Take
cavete a fermento Pharisaeorum et heed and beware of the leaven of the
Sadducaeorum Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

16:7 at illi cogitabant inter se 7. And they reasoned among themselves,
dicentes quia panes non accepimus saying, It is because we have taken no
                                             bread.

16:8 sciens autem Iesus dixit quid 8. Which when Jesus perceived, he said
cogitatis inter vos modicae fidei quia unto them, O ye of little faith, why
panes non habetis reason ye among yourselves, because ye
                                             have brought no bread?

16:9 nondum intellegitis neque 9. Do ye not yet understand, neither
recordamini quinque panum quinque remember the five loaves of the five
milium hominum et quot cofinos thousand, and how many baskets ye took
sumpsistis up?

16:10 neque septem panum quattuor 10. Neither the seven loaves of the
milium hominum et quot sportas four thousand, and how many baskets ye
sumpsistis took up?

16:11 quare non intellegitis quia non 11. How is it that ye do not
de pane dixi vobis cavete a fermento understand that I spake it not to you
Pharisaeorum et Sadducaeorum concerning bread, that ye should beware
of the leaven of the Pharisees and of
                                             the Sadducees?

16:12 tunc intellexerunt quia non 12. Then understood they how that he
dixerit cavendum a fermento panum sed a bade them not beware of the leaven of
doctrina Pharisaeorum et Sadducaeorum bread, but of the doctrine of the
                                             Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

16:13 venit autem Iesus in partes 13. When Jesus came into the coasts of
Caesareae Philippi et interrogabat Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
discipulos suos dicens quem dicunt disciples, saying, Whom do men say that
homines esse Filium hominis I the Son of man am?

16:14 at illi dixerunt alii Iohannem 14. And they said, Some say that thou
Baptistam alii autem Heliam alii vero art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and
Hieremiam aut unum ex prophetis others, Jeremias, or one of the
                                             prophets.

16:15 dicit illis vos autem quem me 15. He saith unto them, But whom say
esse dicitis ye that I am?

16:16 respondens Simon Petrus dixit tu 16. And Simon Peter answered and said,
es Christus Filius Dei vivi Thou art the Christ, the Son of the
                                             living God.

16:17 respondens autem Iesus dixit ei 17. And Jesus answered and said unto
beatus es Simon Bar Iona quia caro et him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
sanguis non revelavit tibi sed Pater for flesh and blood hath not revealed
meus qui in caelis est it unto thee, but my Father which is in
                                             heaven.

16:18 et ego dico tibi quia tu es 18. And I say also unto thee, That
Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo thou art Peter, and upon this rock I
ecclesiam meam et portae inferi non will build my church; and the gates of

16:19 et tibi dabo claves regni 19. And I will give unto thee the keys
caelorum et quodcumque ligaveris super of the kingdom of heaven: and
terram erit ligatum in caelis et whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth
quodcumque solveris super terram erit shall be bound in heaven: and
solutum in caelis whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth
                                             shall be loosed in heaven.

16:20 tunc praecepit discipulis suis ut 20. Then charged he his disciples that
nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Iesus they should tell no man that he was
Christus Jesus the Christ.

16:21 exinde coepit Iesus ostendere 21. From that time forth began Jesus
discipulis suis quia oporteret eum ire to shew unto his disciples, how that he
Hierosolymam et multa pati a senioribus must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many
et scribis et principibus sacerdotum et things of the elders and chief priests
occidi et tertia die resurgere and scribes, and be killed, and be
                                             raised again the third day.

16:22 et adsumens eum Petrus coepit 22. Then Peter took him, and began to
increpare illum dicens absit a te rebuke him, saying, Be it far from
Domine non erit tibi hoc thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

16:23 qui conversus dixit Petro vade 23. But he turned, and said unto
post me Satana scandalum es mihi quia Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou
non sapis ea quae Dei sunt sed ea quae art an offence unto me: for thou
hominum savourest not the things that be of
God, but those that be of men.

16:24 tunc Iesus dixit discipulis suis 24. Then said Jesus unto his
si quis vult post me venire abneget disciples, If any man will come after
semet ipsum et tollat crucem suam et me, let him deny himself, and take up
sequatur me his cross, and follow me.

16:25 qui enim voluerit animam suam 25. For whosoever will save his life
salvam facere perdet eam qui autem shall lose it: and whosoever will lose
perdiderit animam suam propter me his life for my sake shall find it.
inveniet eam

16:26 quid enim prodest homini si 26. For what is a man profited, if he
mundum universum lucretur animae vero shall gain the whole world, and lose

dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua in exchange for his soul?

16:27 Filius enim hominis venturus est 27. For the Son of man shall come in
in gloria Patris sui cum angelis suis the glory of his Father with his
et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opus angels; and then he shall reward every

16:28 amen dico vobis sunt quidam de 28. Verily I say unto you, There be
hic stantibus qui non gustabunt mortem some standing here, which shall not

in regno suo of man coming in his kingdom.
