26:1 et factum est cum consummasset 1. And it came to pass, when Jesus had
Iesus sermones hos omnes dixit finished all these sayings, he said
discipulis suis unto his disciples,
26:2 scitis quia post biduum pascha 2. Ye know that after two days is the
fiet et Filius hominis tradetur ut feast of the passover, and the Son of
crucifigatur man is betrayed to be crucified.
26:3 tunc congregati sunt principes 3. Then assembled together the chief
sacerdotum et seniores populi in atrium priests, and the scribes, and the
principis sacerdotum qui dicebatur elders of the people, unto the palace
Caiaphas of the high priest, who was called
Caiaphas,
26:4 et consilium fecerunt ut Iesum 4. And consulted that they might take
dolo tenerent et occiderent Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
26:5 dicebant autem non in die festo ne 5. But they said, Not on the feast
forte tumultus fieret in populo day, lest there be an uproar among the
people.
26:6 cum autem esset Iesus in Bethania 6. Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in
in domo Simonis leprosi the house of Simon the leper,
26:7 accessit ad eum mulier habens 7. There came unto him a woman having
alabastrum unguenti pretiosi et effudit an alabaster box of very precious
super caput ipsius recumbentis ointment, and poured it on his head, as
he sat at meat.
26:8 videntes autem discipuli indignati 8. But when his disciples saw it, they
sunt dicentes ut quid perditio haec had indignation, saying, To what
purpose is this waste?
26:9 potuit enim istud venundari multo 9. For this ointment might have been
et dari pauperibus sold for much, and given to the poor.
26:10 sciens autem Iesus ait illis quid 10. When Jesus understood it, he said
molesti estis mulieri opus bonum unto them, Why trouble ye the woman?
operata est in me for she hath wrought a good work upon
me.
26:11 nam semper pauperes habetis 11. For ye have the poor always with
vobiscum me autem non semper habetis you; but me ye have not always.
26:12 mittens enim haec unguentum hoc 12. For in that she hath poured this
in corpus meum ad sepeliendum me fecit ointment on my body, she did it for my
burial.
26:13 amen dico vobis ubicumque 13. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever
praedicatum fuerit hoc evangelium in this gospel shall be preached in the
toto mundo dicetur et quod haec fecit whole world, there shall also this,
in memoriam eius that this woman hath done, be told for
a memorial of her.
26:14 tunc abiit unus de duodecim qui 14. Then one of the twelve, called
dicitur Iudas Scarioth ad principes Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief
sacerdotum priests,
26:15 et ait illis quid vultis mihi 15. And said unto them, What will ye
dare et ego vobis eum tradam at illi give me, and I will deliver him unto
constituerunt ei triginta argenteos you? And they covenanted with him for
thirty pieces of silver.
26:16 et exinde quaerebat oportunitatem 16. And from that time he sought
ut eum traderet opportunity to betray him.
26:17 prima autem azymorum accesserunt 17. Now the first day of the feast of
discipuli ad Iesum dicentes ubi vis unleavened bread the disciples came to
paremus tibi comedere pascha Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou
that we prepare for thee to eat the
passover?
26:18 at Iesus dixit ite in civitatem 18. And he said, Go into the city to
ad quendam et dicite ei magister dicit such a man, and say unto him, The
tempus meum prope est apud te facio Master saith, My time is at hand; I
pascha cum discipulis meis will keep the passover at thy house
with my disciples.
26:19 et fecerunt discipuli sicut 19. And the disciples did as Jesus had
constituit illis Iesus et paraverunt appointed them; and they made ready the
pascha passover.
26:20 vespere autem facto discumbebat 20. Now when the even was come, he sat
cum duodecim discipulis down with the twelve.
26:21 et edentibus illis dixit amen 21. And as they did eat, he said,
dico vobis quia unus vestrum me Verily I say unto you, that one of you
traditurus est shall betray me.
26:22 et contristati valde coeperunt 22. And they were exceeding sorrowful,
singuli dicere numquid ego sum Domine and began every one of them to say unto
him, Lord, is it I?
26:23 at ipse respondens ait qui 23. And he answered and said, He that
intinguit mecum manum in parapside hic dippeth his hand with me in the dish,
me tradet the same shall betray me.
26:24 Filius quidem hominis vadit sicut 24. The Son of man goeth as it is
scriptum est de illo vae autem homini written of him: but woe unto that man
illi per quem Filius hominis traditur by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it
bonum erat ei si natus non fuisset homo had been good for that man if he had
ille not been born.
26:25 respondens autem Iudas qui 25. Then Judas, which betrayed him,
tradidit eum dixit numquid ego sum answered and said, Master, is it I? He
rabbi ait illi tu dixisti said unto him, Thou hast said.
26:26 cenantibus autem eis accepit 26. And as they were eating, Jesus
Iesus panem et benedixit ac fregit took bread, and blessed it, and brake
deditque discipulis suis et ait it, and gave it to the disciples, and
accipite et comedite hoc est corpus meum said, Take, eat; this is my body.
26:27 et accipiens calicem gratias egit 27. And he took the cup, and gave
et dedit illis dicens bibite ex hoc thanks, and gave it to them, saying,
omnes Drink ye all of it;
26:28 hic est enim sanguis meus novi 28. For this is my blood of the new
testamenti qui pro multis effunditur in testament, which is shed for many for
remissionem peccatorum the remission of sins.
26:29 dico autem vobis non bibam amodo 29. But I say unto you, I will not
de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem drink henceforth of this fruit of the
illum cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in vine, until that day when I drink it
regno Patris mei new with you in my Father's kingdom.
26:30 et hymno dicto exierunt in montem 30. And when they had sung an hymn,
Oliveti they went out into the mount of Olives.
26:31 tunc dicit illis Iesus omnes vos 31. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye
scandalum patiemini in me in ista nocte shall be offended because of me this
scriptum est enim percutiam pastorem et night: for it is written, I will smite
dispergentur oves gregis the shepherd, and the sheep of the
flock shall be scattered abroad.
26:32 postquam autem resurrexero 32. But after I am risen again, I will
praecedam vos in Galilaeam go before you into Galilee.
26:33 respondens autem Petrus ait illi 33. Peter answered and said unto him,
et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te Though all men shall be offended
ego numquam scandalizabor because of thee, yet will I never be
offended.
26:34 ait illi Iesus amen dico tibi 34. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say
quia in hac nocte antequam gallus unto thee, That this night, before the
cantet ter me negabis cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
26:35 ait illi Petrus etiam si 35. Peter said unto him, Though I
oportuerit me mori tecum non te negabo should die with thee, yet will I not
similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt deny thee. Likewise also said all the
disciples.
26:36 tunc venit Iesus cum illis in 36. Then cometh Jesus with them unto a
villam quae dicitur Gethsemani et dixit place called Gethsemane, and saith unto
discipulis suis sedete hic donec vadam the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go
illuc et orem and pray yonder.
26:37 et adsumpto Petro et duobus 37. And he took with him Peter and the
filiis Zebedaei coepit contristari et two sons of Zebedee, and began to be
maestus esse sorrowful and very heavy.
26:38 tunc ait illis tristis est anima 38. Then saith he unto them, My soul
mea usque ad mortem sustinete hic et is exceeding sorrowful, even unto
vigilate mecum death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
26:39 et progressus pusillum procidit 39. And he went a little farther, and
in faciem suam orans et dicens mi Pater fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O
si possibile est transeat a me calix my Father, if it be possible, let this
iste verumtamen non sicut ego volo sed cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I
sicut tu will, but as thou wilt.
26:40 et venit ad discipulos et invenit 40. And he cometh unto the disciples,
eos dormientes et dicit Petro sic non and findeth them asleep, and saith unto
potuistis una hora vigilare mecum Peter, What, could ye not watch with me
one hour?
26:41 vigilate et orate ut non intretis 41. Watch and pray, that ye enter not
in temptationem spiritus quidem into temptation: the spirit indeed is
promptus est caro autem infirma willing, but the flesh is weak.
26:42 iterum secundo abiit et oravit 42. He went away again the second
dicens Pater mi si non potest hic calix time, and prayed, saying, O my Father,
transire nisi bibam illum fiat voluntas if this cup may not pass away from me,
tua except I drink it, thy will be done.
26:43 et venit iterum et invenit eos 43. And he came and found them asleep
dormientes erant enim oculi eorum again: for their eyes were heavy.
gravati
26:44 et relictis illis iterum abiit et 44. And he left them, and went away
oravit tertio eundem sermonem dicens again, and prayed the third time,
saying the same words.
26:45 tunc venit ad discipulos suos et 45. Then cometh he to his disciples,
dicit illis dormite iam et requiescite and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and
ecce adpropinquavit hora et Filius take your rest: behold, the hour is at
hominis traditur in manus peccatorum hand, and the Son of man is betrayed
into the hands of sinners.
26:46 surgite eamus ecce adpropinquavit 46. Rise, let us be going: behold, he
qui me tradit is at hand that doth betray me.
26:47 adhuc ipso loquente ecce Iudas 47. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas,
unus de duodecim venit et cum eo turba one of the twelve, came, and with him a
multa cum gladiis et fustibus a great multitude with swords and staves,
principibus sacerdotum et senioribus from the chief priests and elders of
populi the people.
26:48 qui autem tradidit eum dedit 48. Now he that betrayed him gave them
illis signum dicens quemcumque a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall
osculatus fuero ipse est tenete eum kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
26:49 et confestim accedens ad Iesum 49. And forthwith he came to Jesus,
dixit have rabbi et osculatus est eum and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
26:50 dixitque illi Iesus amice ad quod 50. And Jesus said unto him, Friend,
venisti tunc accesserunt et manus wherefore art thou come? Then came
iniecerunt in Iesum et tenuerunt eum they, and laid hands on Jesus and took
him.
26:51 et ecce unus ex his qui erant cum 51. And, behold, one of them which
Iesu extendens manum exemit gladium were with Jesus stretched out his hand,
suum et percutiens servum principis and drew his sword, and struck a
sacerdotum amputavit auriculam eius servant of the high priest's, and smote
off his ear.
26:52 tunc ait illi Iesus converte 52. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up
gladium tuum in locum suum omnes enim again thy sword into his place: for all
qui acceperint gladium gladio peribunt they that take the sword shall perish
with the sword.
26:53 an putas quia non possum rogare 53. Thinkest thou that I cannot now
Patrem meum et exhibebit mihi modo plus pray to my Father, and he shall
quam duodecim legiones angelorum presently give me more than twelve
legions of angels?
26:54 quomodo ergo implebuntur 54. But how then shall the scriptures
scripturae quia sic oportet fieri be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
26:55 in illa hora dixit Iesus turbis 55. In that same hour said Jesus to
tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis the multitudes, Are ye come out as
et fustibus conprehendere me cotidie against a thief with swords and staves
apud vos sedebam docens in templo et for to take me? I sat daily with you
non me tenuistis teaching in the temple, and ye laid no
hold on me.
26:56 hoc autem totum factum est ut 56. But all this was done, that the
implerentur scripturae prophetarum tunc scriptures of the prophets might be
discipuli omnes relicto eo fugerunt fulfilled. Then all the disciples
forsook him, and fled.
26:57 at illi tenentes Iesum duxerunt 57. And they that had laid hold on
ad Caiaphan principem sacerdotum ubi Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high
scribae et seniores convenerant priest, where the scribes and the
elders were assembled.
26:58 Petrus autem sequebatur eum a 58. But Peter followed him afar off
longe usque in atrium principis unto the high priest's palace, and went
sacerdotum et ingressus intro sedebat in, and sat with the servants, to see
cum ministris ut videret finem the end.
26:59 principes autem sacerdotum et 59. Now the chief priests, and elders,
omne concilium quaerebant falsum and all the council, sought false
testimonium contra Iesum ut eum morti witness against Jesus, to put him to
traderent death;
26:60 et non invenerunt cum multi falsi 60. But found none: yea, though many
testes accessissent novissime autem false witnesses came, yet found they
venerunt duo falsi testes none. At the last came two false
witnesses,
26:61 et dixerunt hic dixit possum 61. And said, This fellow said, I am
destruere templum Dei et post triduum able to destroy the temple of God, and
aedificare illud to build it in three days.
26:62 et surgens princeps sacerdotum 62. And the high priest arose, and
ait illi nihil respondes ad ea quae said unto him, Answerest thou nothing?
isti adversum te testificantur what is it which these witness against
thee?
26:63 Iesus autem tacebat et princeps 63. But Jesus held his peace, And the
sacerdotum ait illi adiuro te per Deum high priest answered and said unto him,
vivum ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus I adjure thee by the living God, that
Filius Dei thou tell us whether thou be the
Christ, the Son of God.
26:64 dicit illi Iesus tu dixisti 64. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast
verumtamen dico vobis amodo videbitis said: nevertheless I say unto you,
Filium hominis sedentem a dextris Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man
virtutis et venientem in nubibus caeli sitting on the right hand of power, and
coming in the clouds of heaven.
26:65 tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit 65. Then the high priest rent his
vestimenta sua dicens blasphemavit quid clothes, saying, He hath spoken
adhuc egemus testibus ecce nunc blasphemy; what further need have we of
audistis blasphemiam witnesses? behold, now ye have heard
his blasphemy.
26:66 quid vobis videtur at illi 66. What think ye? They answered and
respondentes dixerunt reus est mortis said, He is guilty of death.
26:67 tunc expuerunt in faciem eius et 67. Then did they spit in his face,
colaphis eum ceciderunt alii autem and buffeted him; and others smote him
palmas in faciem ei dederunt with the palms of their hands,
26:68 dicentes prophetiza nobis Christe 68. Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou
quis est qui te percussit Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
26:69 Petrus vero sedebat foris in 69. Now Peter sat without in the
atrio et accessit ad eum una ancilla palace: and a damsel came unto him,
dicens et tu cum Iesu Galilaeo eras saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of
Galilee.
26:70 at ille negavit coram omnibus 70. But he denied before them all,
dicens nescio quid dicis saying, I know not what thou sayest.
26:71 exeunte autem illo ianuam vidit 71. And when he was gone out into the
eum alia et ait his qui erant ibi et porch, another maid saw him, and said
hic erat cum Iesu Nazareno unto them that were there, This fellow
was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
26:72 et iterum negavit cum iuramento 72. And again he denied with an oath,
quia non novi hominem I do not know the man.
26:73 et post pusillum accesserunt qui 73. And after a while came unto him
stabant et dixerunt Petro vere et tu ex they that stood by, and said to Peter,
illis es nam et loquella tua manifestum Surely thou also art one of them; for
te facit thy speech bewrayeth thee.
26:74 tunc coepit detestari et iurare 74. Then began he to curse and to
quia non novisset hominem et continuo swear, saying, I know not the man. And
gallus cantavit immediately the cock crew.
26:75 et recordatus est Petrus verbi 75. And Peter remembered the word of
Iesu quod dixerat priusquam gallus Jesus, which said unto him, Before the
cantet ter me negabis et egressus foras cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
ploravit amare And he went out, and wept bitterly.
