5:1 videns autem turbas ascendit in 1. And seeing the multitudes, he went
montem et cum sedisset accesserunt ad up into a mountain: and when he was
eum discipuli eius set, his disciples came unto him:
5:2 et aperiens os suum docebat eos 2. And he opened his mouth, and taught
dicens them, saying,
5:3 beati pauperes spiritu quoniam 3. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for
ipsorum est regnum caelorum theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5:4 beati mites quoniam ipsi 4. Blessed are they that mourn: for
possidebunt terram they shall be comforted.
5:5 beati qui lugent quoniam ipsi 5. Blessed are the meek: for they
consolabuntur shall inherit the earth.
5:6 beati qui esuriunt et sitiunt 6. Blessed are they which do hunger
iustitiam quoniam ipsi saturabuntur and thirst after righteousness: for
they shall be filled.
5:7 beati misericordes quia ipsi 7. Blessed are the merciful: for they
misericordiam consequentur shall obtain mercy.
5:8 beati mundo corde quoniam ipsi Deum 8. Blessed are the pure in heart: for
videbunt they shall see God.
5:9 beati pacifici quoniam filii Dei 9. Blessed are the peacemakers: for
vocabuntur they shall be called the children of
God.
5:10 beati qui persecutionem patiuntur 10. Blessed are they which are
propter iustitiam quoniam ipsorum est persecuted for righteousness' sake: for
regnum caelorum theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5:11 beati estis cum maledixerint vobis 11. Blessed are ye, when men shall
et persecuti vos fuerint et dixerint revile you, and persecute you, and
omne malum adversum vos mentientes shall say all manner of evil against
propter me you falsely, for my sake.
5:12 gaudete et exultate quoniam merces 12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad:
vestra copiosa est in caelis sic enim for great is your reward in heaven: for
persecuti sunt prophetas qui fuerunt so persecuted they the prophets which
ante vos were before you.
5:13 vos estis sal terrae quod si sal 13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but
evanuerit in quo sallietur ad nihilum if the salt have lost his savour,
valet ultra nisi ut mittatur foras et wherewith shall it be salted? it is
conculcetur ab hominibus thenceforth good for nothing, but to be
cast out, and to be trodden under foot
of men.
5:14 vos estis lux mundi non potest 14. Ye are the light of the world. A
civitas abscondi supra montem posita city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid.
5:15 neque accendunt lucernam et ponunt 15. Neither do men light a candle, and
eam sub modio sed super candelabrum ut put it under a bushel, but on a
luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt candlestick; and it giveth light unto
all that are in the house.
5:16 sic luceat lux vestra coram 16. Let your light so shine before
hominibus ut videant vestra bona opera men, that they may see your good works,
et glorificent Patrem vestrum qui in and glorify your Father which is in
caelis est heaven.
5:17 nolite putare quoniam veni solvere 17. Think not that I am come to
legem aut prophetas non veni solvere destroy the law, or the prophets: I am
sed adimplere not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
5:18 amen quippe dico vobis donec 18. For verily I say unto you, Till
transeat caelum et terra iota unum aut heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
unus apex non praeteribit a lege donec tittle shall in no wise pass from the
omnia fiant law, till all be fulfilled.
5:19 qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis 19. Whosoever therefore shall break
istis minimis et docuerit sic homines one of these least commandments, and
minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum qui shall teach men so, he shall be called
autem fecerit et docuerit hic magnus the least in the kingdom of heaven: but
vocabitur in regno caelorum whosoever shall do and teach them, the
same shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.
5:20 dico enim vobis quia nisi 20. For I say unto you, That except
abundaverit iustitia vestra plus quam your righteousness shall exceed the
scribarum et Pharisaeorum non righteousness of the scribes and
intrabitis in regnum caelorum Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter
into the kingdom of heaven.
5:21 audistis quia dictum est antiquis 21. Ye have heard that it was said of
non occides qui autem occiderit reus them of old time, Thou shalt not kill;
erit iudicio and whosoever shall kill shall be in
danger of the judgment:
5:22 ego autem dico vobis quia omnis 22. But I say unto you, That whosoever
qui irascitur fratri suo reus erit is angry with his brother without a
iudicio qui autem dixerit fratri suo cause shall be in danger of the
racha reus erit concilio qui autem judgment: and whosoever shall say to
dixerit fatue reus erit gehennae ignis his brother, Raca, shall be in danger

hell fire.
5:23 si ergo offeres munus tuum ad 23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift
altare et ibi recordatus fueris quia to the altar, and there rememberest
frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te that thy brother hath ought against
thee;
5:24 relinque ibi munus tuum ante 24. Leave there thy gift before the
altare et vade prius reconciliare altar, and go thy way; first be
fratri tuo et tunc veniens offers munus reconciled to thy brother, and then
tuum come and offer thy gift.
5:25 esto consentiens adversario tuo 25. Agree with thine adversary
cito dum es in via cum eo ne forte quickly, whiles thou art in the way
tradat te adversarius iudici et iudex with him; lest at any time the
tradat te ministro et in carcerem adversary deliver thee to the judge,
mittaris and the judge deliver thee to the
officer, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26 amen dico tibi non exies inde 26. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt
donec reddas novissimum quadrantem by no means come out thence, till thou
hast paid the uttermost farthing.
5:27 audistis quia dictum est antiquis 27. Ye have heard that it was said by
non moechaberis them of old time, Thou shalt not commit
adultery:
5:28 ego autem dico vobis quoniam omnis 28. But I say unto you, That whosoever
qui viderit mulierem ad concupiscendum looketh on a woman to lust after her

5:29 quod si oculus tuus dexter 29. And if thy right eye offend thee,

membrorum tuorum quam totum corpus tuum of thy members should perish, and not
mittatur in gehennam that thy whole body should be cast into
hell.
5:30 et si dextera manus tua 30. And if thy right hand offend thee,
scandalizat te abscide eam et proice cut it off, and cast it from thee: for
abs te expedit tibi ut pereat unum it is profitable for thee that one of
membrorum tuorum quam totum corpus tuum thy members should perish, and not that
eat in gehennam thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31 dictum est autem quicumque 31. It hath been said, Whosoever shall
dimiserit uxorem suam det illi libellum put away his wife, let him give her a
repudii writing of divorcement:
5:32 ego autem dico vobis quia omnis 32. But I say unto you, That whosoever
qui dimiserit uxorem suam excepta shall put away his wife, saving for the

5:34 ego autem dico vobis non iurare 34. But I say unto you, Swear not at

5:38 audistis quia dictum est oculum 38. Ye have heard that it hath been
pro oculo et dentem pro dente said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth
for a tooth:
5:39 ego autem dico vobis non resistere 39. But I say unto you, That ye resist
malo sed si quis te percusserit in not evil: but whosoever shall smite
dextera maxilla tua praebe illi et thee on thy right cheek, turn to him
alteram the other also.
5:40 et ei qui vult tecum iudicio 40. And if any man will sue thee at
contendere et tunicam tuam tollere the law, and take away thy coat, let
remitte ei et pallium him have thy cloak also.
5:41 et quicumque te angariaverit mille 41. And whosoever shall compel thee to
passus vade cum illo alia duo go a mile, go with him twain.
5:42 qui petit a te da ei et volenti 42. Give to him that asketh thee, and
mutuari a te ne avertaris from him that would borrow of thee turn
not thou away.
5:43 audistis quia dictum est diliges 43. Ye have heard that it hath been
proximum tuum et odio habebis inimicum said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour,
tuum and hate thine enemy.
5:44 ego autem dico vobis diligite 44. But I say unto you, Love your
inimicos vestros benefacite his qui enemies, bless them that curse you, do
oderunt vos et orate pro persequentibus good to them that hate you, and pray
et calumniantibus vos for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;
5:45 ut sitis filii Patris vestri qui 45. That ye may be the children of
in caelis est qui solem suum oriri your Father which is in heaven: for he
facit super bonos et malos et pluit maketh his sun to rise on the evil and
super iustos et iniustos on the good, and sendeth rain on the
just and on the unjust.
5:46 si enim diligatis eos qui vos 46. For if ye love them which love
diligunt quam mercedem habebitis nonne you, what reward have ye? do not even
et publicani hoc faciunt the publicans the same?
5:47 et si salutaveritis fratres 47. And if ye salute your brethren
vestros tantum quid amplius facitis only, what do ye more than others? do
nonne et ethnici hoc faciunt not even the publicans so?
5:48 estote ergo vos perfecti sicut et 48. Be ye therefore perfect, even as
Pater vester caelestis perfectus est your Father which is in heaven is
perfect.
