23:1 tunc Iesus locutus est ad turbas 1. Then spake Jesus to the multitude,
et discipulos suos and to his disciples,

23:2 dicens super cathedram Mosi 2. Saying The scribes and the

23:3 omnia ergo quaecumque dixerint 3. All therefore whatsoever they bid
vobis servate et facite secundum opera you observe, that observe and do; but
vero eorum nolite facere dicunt enim et do not ye after their works: for they
non faciunt say, and do not.

23:4 alligant autem onera gravia et 4. For they bind heavy burdens and

23:5 omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut 5. But all their works they do for to

phylacteria sua et magnificant fimbrias phylacteries, and enlarge the borders

23:6 amant autem primos recubitus in 6. And love the uppermost rooms at
cenis et primas cathedras in synagogis feasts, and the chief seats in the
                                             synagogues,

23:9 et patrem nolite vocare vobis 9. And call no man your father upon
super terram unus enim est Pater vester the earth: for one is your Father,
qui in caelis est which is in heaven.

23:10 nec vocemini magistri quia 10. Neither be ye called masters: for
magister vester unus est Christus one is your Master, even Christ.

23:11 qui maior est vestrum erit 11. But he that is greatest among you
minister vester shall be your servant.

23:12 qui autem se exaltaverit 12. And whosoever shall exalt himself

23:13 vae autem vobis scribae et 13. But woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisaei hypocritae quia clauditis Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up
regnum caelorum ante homines vos enim the kingdom of heaven against men: for
non intratis nec introeuntes sinitis ye neither go in yourselves, neither
intrare suffer ye them that are entering to go

23:14 [] 14. Woe unto you, scribes and
                                             Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour
widows' houses, and for a pretence make
long prayer: therefore ye shall receive
                                             the greater damnation.

23:15 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 15. Woe unto you, scribes and
hypocritae quia circuitis mare et Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass
aridam ut faciatis unum proselytum et sea and land to make one proselyte, and
cum fuerit factus facitis eum filium when he is made, ye make him twofold
gehennae duplo quam vos more the child of hell than yourselves.

23:27 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 27. Woe unto you, scribes and
hypocritae quia similes estis Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like
sepulchris dealbatis quae a foris unto whited sepulchres, which indeed
parent hominibus speciosa intus vero appear beautiful outward, but are
plena sunt ossibus mortuorum et omni within full of dead men's bones, and of
spurcitia all uncleanness.

23:28 sic et vos a foris quidem paretis 28. Even so ye also outwardly appear
hominibus iusti intus autem pleni estis righteous unto men, but within ye are
hypocrisi et iniquitate full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

23:29 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 29. Woe unto you, scribes and
hypocritae quia aedificatis sepulchra Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build
prophetarum et ornatis monumenta the tombs of the prophets, and garnish
iustorum the sepulchres of the righteous,

23:30 et dicitis si fuissemus in diebus 30. And say, If we had been in the
patrum nostrorum non essemus socii days of our fathers, we would not have
eorum in sanguine prophetarum been partakers with them in the blood
                                             of the prophets.

23:31 itaque testimonio estis vobismet 31. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto
ipsis quia filii estis eorum qui yourselves, that ye are the children of
prophetas occiderunt them which killed the prophets.

23:32 et vos implete mensuram patrum 32. Fill ye up then the measure of
vestrorum your fathers.

23:33 serpentes genimina viperarum 33. Ye serpents, ye generation of
quomodo fugietis a iudicio gehennae vipers, how can ye escape the damnation
                                             of hell?

23:34 ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos 34. Wherefore, behold, I send unto you
prophetas et sapientes et scribas ex prophets, and wise men, and scribes:
illis occidetis et crucifigetis et ex and some of them ye shall kill and
eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris crucify; and some of them shall ye
et persequemini de civitate in civitatem scourge in your synagogues, and
persecute them from city to city:

23:35 ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis 35. That upon you may come all the
iustus qui effusus est super terram a righteous blood shed upon the earth,
sanguine Abel iusti usque ad sanguinem from the blood of righteous Abel unto
Zacchariae filii Barachiae quem the blood of Zacharias son of
occidistis inter templum et altare Barachias, whom ye slew between the
                                             temple and the altar.

23:36 amen dico vobis venient haec 36. Verily I say unto you, All these
omnia super generationem istam things shall come upon this generation.

23:37 Hierusalem Hierusalem quae 37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that
occidis prophetas et lapidas eos qui ad killest the prophets, and stonest them
te missi sunt quotiens volui congregare which are sent unto thee, how often
filios tuos quemadmodum gallina would I have gathered thy children
congregat pullos suos sub alas et together, even as a hen gathereth her
noluisti chickens under her wings, and ye would
                                             not!

23:38 ecce relinquitur vobis domus 38. Behold, your house is left unto
vestra deserta you desolate.

23:39 dico enim vobis non me videbitis 39. For I say unto you, Ye shall not
amodo donec dicatis benedictus qui see me henceforth, till ye shall say,
venit in nomine Domini Blessed is he that cometh in the name
                                             of the Lord.
