Then spake Jesus to the multitude, et discipulos suos and to his disciples, 23:2 dicens super cathedram Mosi 2. Saying The scribes and the sederunt scribae et Pharisaei Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 23:3 omnia ergo quaecumque dixerint 3. All therefore whatsoever they bid vobis servate et facite secundum opera you observe, that observe and do; but vero eorum nolite facere dicunt enim et do not ye after their works: for they non faciunt say, and do not. 23:4 alligant autem onera gravia et 4. For they bind heavy burdens and inportabilia et inponunt in umeros grievous to be borne, and lay them on hominum digito autem suo nolunt ea men's shoulders; but they themselves movere will not move them with one of their fingers. 23:5 omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut 5. But all their works they do for to videantur ab hominibus dilatant enim be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteria sua et magnificant fimbrias phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 23:6 amant autem primos recubitus in 6. And love the uppermost rooms at cenis et primas cathedras in synagogis feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 23:7 et salutationes in foro et vocari 7. And greetings in the markets, and ab hominibus rabbi to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 23:8 vos autem nolite vocari rabbi unus 8. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one enim est magister vester omnes autem is your Master, even Christ; and all ye vos fratres estis are brethren. 23:9 et patrem nolite vocare vobis 9. And call no man your father upon super terram unus enim est Pater vester the earth: for one is your Father, qui in caelis est which is in heaven. 23:10 nec vocemini magistri quia 10. Neither be ye called masters: for magister vester unus est Christus one is your Master, even Christ. 23:11 qui maior est vestrum erit 11. But he that is greatest among you minister vester shall be your servant. 23:12 qui autem se exaltaverit 12. And whosoever shall exalt himself humiliabitur et qui se humiliaverit shall be abased; and he that shall exaltabitur humble himself shall be exalted. 23:13 vae autem vobis scribae et 13. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisaei hypocritae quia clauditis Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up regnum caelorum ante homines vos enim the kingdom of heaven against men: for non intratis nec introeuntes sinitis ye neither go in yourselves, neither intrare suffer ye them that are entering to go in. 23:14 [] 14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. 23:15 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 15. Woe unto you, scribes and hypocritae quia circuitis mare et Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass aridam ut faciatis unum proselytum et sea and land to make one proselyte, and cum fuerit factus facitis eum filium when he is made, ye make him twofold gehennae duplo quam vos more the child of hell than yourselves. 23:16 vae vobis duces caeci qui dicitis 16. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, quicumque iuraverit per templum nihil which say, Whosoever shall swear by the est qui autem iuraverit in aurum templi temple, it is nothing; but whosoever debet shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 23:17 stulti et caeci quid enim maius 17. Ye fools and blind: for whether is est aurum an templum quod sanctificat greater, the gold, or the temple that aurum sanctifieth the gold? 23:18 et quicumque iuraverit in altari 18. And, Whosoever shall swear by the nihil est quicumque autem iuraverit in altar, it is nothing; but whosoever dono quod est super illud debet sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 23:19 caeci quid enim maius est donum 19. Ye fools and blind: for whether is an altare quod sanctificat donum greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 23:20 qui ergo iurat in altare iurat in 20. Whoso therefore shall swear by the eo et in omnibus quae super illud sunt altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 23:21 et qui iuraverit in templo iurat 21. And whoso shall swear by the in illo et in eo qui inhabitat in ipso temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 23:22 et qui iurat in caelo iurat in 22. And he that shall swear by heaven, throno Dei et in eo qui sedet super eum sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23:23 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 23. Woe unto you, scribes and hypocritae quia decimatis mentam et Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe anethum et cyminum et reliquistis quae of mint and anise and cummin, and have graviora sunt legis iudicium et omitted the weightier matters of the misericordiam et fidem haec oportuit law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these facere et illa non omittere ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 23:24 duces caeci excolantes culicem 24. Ye blind guides, which strain at a camelum autem gluttientes gnat, and swallow a camel. 23:25 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 25. Woe unto you, scribes and hypocritae quia mundatis quod de foris Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make est calicis et parapsidis intus autem clean the outside of the cup and of the pleni sunt rapina et inmunditia platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 23:26 Pharisaee caece munda prius quod 26. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first intus est calicis et parapsidis ut fiat that which is within the cup and et id quod de foris est mundum platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 23:27 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 27. Woe unto you, scribes and hypocritae quia similes estis Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like sepulchris dealbatis quae a foris unto whited sepulchres, which indeed parent hominibus speciosa intus vero appear beautiful outward, but are plena sunt ossibus mortuorum et omni within full of dead men's bones, and of spurcitia all uncleanness. 23:28 sic et vos a foris quidem paretis 28. Even so ye also outwardly appear hominibus iusti intus autem pleni estis righteous unto men, but within ye are hypocrisi et iniquitate full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 23:29 vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei 29. Woe unto you, scribes and hypocritae quia aedificatis sepulchra Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build prophetarum et ornatis monumenta the tombs of the prophets, and garnish iustorum the sepulchres of the righteous, 23:30 et dicitis si fuissemus in diebus 30. And say, If we had been in the patrum nostrorum non essemus socii days of our fathers, we would not have eorum in sanguine prophetarum been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 23:31 itaque testimonio estis vobismet 31. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto ipsis quia filii estis eorum qui yourselves, that ye are the children of prophetas occiderunt them which killed the prophets. 23:32 et vos implete mensuram patrum 32. Fill ye up then the measure of vestrorum your fathers. 23:33 serpentes genimina viperarum 33. Ye serpents, ye generation of quomodo fugietis a iudicio gehennae vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? 23:34 ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos 34. Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophetas et sapientes et scribas ex prophets, and wise men, and scribes: illis occidetis et crucifigetis et ex and some of them ye shall kill and eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris crucify; and some of them shall ye et persequemini de civitate in civitatem scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: 23:35 ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis 35. That upon you may come all the iustus qui effusus est super terram a righteous blood shed upon the earth, sanguine Abel iusti usque ad sanguinem from the blood of righteous Abel unto Zacchariae filii Barachiae quem the blood of Zacharias son of occidistis inter templum et altare Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. 23:36 amen dico vobis venient haec 36. Verily I say unto you, All these omnia super generationem istam things shall come upon this generation. 23:37 Hierusalem Hierusalem quae 37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that occidis prophetas et lapidas eos qui ad killest the prophets, and stonest them te missi sunt quotiens volui congregare which are sent unto thee, how often filios tuos quemadmodum gallina would I have gathered thy children congregat pullos suos sub alas et together, even as a hen gathereth her noluisti chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 23:38 ecce relinquitur vobis domus 38. Behold, your house is left unto vestra deserta you desolate. 23:39 dico enim vobis non me videbitis 39. For I say unto you, Ye shall not amodo donec dicatis benedictus qui see me henceforth, till ye shall say, venit in nomine Domini Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. |
