2:1 cum ergo natus esset Iesus in            1.  Now when Jesus was born in
Bethleem Iudaeae in diebus Herodis           Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of
regis ecce magi ab oriente venerunt          Herod the king, behold, there came wise
Hierosolymam                                 men from the east to Jerusalem,
                                             
2:2 dicentes ubi est qui natus est rex       2.  Saying, Where is he that is born
Iudaeorum vidimus enim stellam eius in       King of the Jews? for we have seen his
oriente et venimus adorare eum               star in the east, and are come to
                                             worship him.
                                             
2:3 audiens autem Herodes rex turbatus       3.  When Herod the king had heard these
est et omnis Hierosolyma cum illo            things, he was troubled, and all
                                             Jerusalem with him.
                                             
2:4 et congregans omnes principes            4.  And when he had gathered all the
sacerdotum et scribas populi                 chief priests and scribes of the people
sciscitabatur ab eis ubi Christus            together, he demanded of them where
nasceretur                                   Christ should be born.
                                             
2:5 at illi dixerunt ei in Bethleem          5.  And they said unto him, In
Iudaeae sic enim scriptum est per            Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is
prophetam                                    written by the prophet,
                                             
2:6 et tu Bethleem terra Iuda nequaquam      6.  And thou Bethlehem, in the land of
minima es in principibus Iuda ex te          Juda, art not the least among the
enim exiet dux qui reget populum meum        princes of Juda: for out of thee shall
Israhel                                      come a Governor, that shall rule my
                                             people Israel.
                                             
2:7 tunc Herodes clam vocatis magis          7.  Then Herod, when he had privily
diligenter didicit ab eis tempus             called the wise men, enquired of them
stellae quae apparuit eis                    diligently what time the star appeared.
                                             
2:8 et mittens illos in Bethleem dixit       8.  And he sent them to Bethlehem, and
ite et interrogate diligenter de puero       said, Go and search diligently for the
et cum inveneritis renuntiate mihi ut        young child; and when ye have found
et ego veniens adorem eum                    him, bring me word again, that I may
                                             come and worship him also.
                                             
2:9 qui cum audissent regem abierunt et      9.  When they had heard the king, they
ecce stella quam viderant in oriente         departed; and, lo, the star, which they
antecedebat eos usque dum veniens            saw in the east, went before them, till
staret supra ubi erat puer                   it came and stood over where the young
                                             child was.
                                             
2:10 videntes autem stellam gavisi sunt      10.  When they saw the star, they
gaudio magno valde                           rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
                                             
2:11 et intrantes domum invenerunt           11.  And when they were come into the
puerum cum Maria matre eius et               house, they saw the young child with
procidentes adoraverunt eum et apertis       Mary his mother, and fell down, and
thesauris suis obtulerunt ei munera          worshipped him: and when they had
aurum tus et murram                          opened their treasures, they presented
                                             unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense
                                             and myrrh.
                                             
2:12 et responso accepto in somnis ne        12.  And being warned of God in a dream
redirent ad Herodem per aliam viam           that they should not return to Herod,
reversi sunt in regionem suam                they departed into their own country
                                             another way.
                                             
2:13 qui cum recessissent ecce angelus       13.  And when they were departed,
Domini apparuit in somnis Ioseph dicens      behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth
surge et accipe puerum et matrem eius        to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise,
et fuge in Aegyptum et esto ibi usque        and take the young child and his
dum dicam tibi futurum est enim ut           mother, and flee into Egypt, and be
Herodes quaerat puerum ad perdendum eum      thou there until I bring thee word: for
                                             Herod will seek the young child to
                                             destroy him.
                                             
2:14 qui consurgens accepit puerum et        14.  When he arose, he took the young
matrem eius nocte et recessit in             child and his mother by night, and
Aegyptum                                     departed into Egypt:
                                             
2:15 et erat ibi usque ad obitum             15.  And was there until the death of
Herodis ut adimpleretur quod dictum est      Herod: that it might be fulfilled which
a Domino per prophetam dicentem ex           was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,
Aegypto vocavi filium meum                   saying, Out of Egypt have I called my
                                             son.
                                             
2:16 tunc Herodes videns quoniam             16.  Then Herod, when he saw that he
inlusus esset a magis iratus est valde       was mocked of the wise men, was
et mittens occidit omnes pueros qui          exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and
erant in Bethleem et in omnibus finibus      slew all the children that were in
eius a bimatu et infra secundum tempus       Bethlehem, and in all the coasts
quod exquisierat a magis                     thereof, from two years old and under,
                                             according to the time which he had
                                             diligently enquired of the wise men.
                                             
2:17 tunc adimpletum est quod dictum         17.  Then was fulfilled that which was
est per Hieremiam prophetam dicentem         spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
                                             
2:18 vox in Rama audita est ploratus et      18.  In Rama was there a voice heard,
ululatus multus Rachel plorans filios        lamentation, and weeping, and great
suos et noluit consolari quia non sunt       mourning, Rachel weeping for her
                                             children, and would not be comforted,
                                             because they are not.
                                             
2:19 defuncto autem Herode ecce              19.  But when Herod was dead, behold,
apparuit angelus Domini in somnis            an angel of the Lord appeareth in a
Ioseph in Aegypto                            dream to Joseph in Egypt,
                                             
2:20 dicens surge et accipe puerum et        20.  Saying, Arise, and take the young
matrem eius et vade in terram Israhel        child and his mother, and go into the
defuncti sunt enim qui quaerebant            land of Israel: for they are dead which
animam pueri                                 sought the young child's life.
                                             
2:21 qui surgens accepit puerum et           21.  And he arose, and took the young
matrem eius et venit in terram Israhel       child and his mother, and came into the
                                             land of Israel.
                                             
2:22 audiens autem quod Archelaus            22.  But when he heard that Archelaus
regnaret in Iudaea pro Herode patre suo      did reign in Judaea in the room of his
timuit illo ire et admonitus in somnis       father Herod, he was afraid to go
secessit in partes Galilaeae                 thither: notwithstanding, being warned
                                             of God in a dream, he turned aside into
                                             the parts of Galilee:
                                             
2:23 et veniens habitavit in civitate        23.  And he came and dwelt in a city
quae vocatur Nazareth ut adimpleretur        called Nazareth: that it might be
quod dictum est per prophetas quoniam        fulfilled which was spoken by the
Nazareus vocabitur                           prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
