1:1 primum quidem sermonem feci de 1. The former treatise have I made, O
omnibus o Theophile quae coepit Iesus Theophilus, of all that Jesus began
facere et docere both to do and teach,

1:2 usque in diem qua praecipiens 2. Until the day in which he was
apostolis per Spiritum Sanctum quos taken up, after that he through the
elegit adsumptus est Holy Ghost had given commandments unto
the apostles whom he had chosen:

1:3 quibus et praebuit se ipsum vivum 3. To whom also he shewed himself
post passionem suam in multis alive after his passion by many
argumentis per dies quadraginta infallible proofs, being seen of them
apparens eis et loquens de regno Dei forty days, and speaking of the things
pertaining to the kingdom of God:

1:4 et convescens praecepit eis ab 4. And, being assembled together with
Hierosolymis ne discederent sed them, commanded them that they should
expectarent promissionem Patris quam not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for
audistis per os meum the promise of the Father, which, saith
he, ye have heard of me.

1:5  quia Iohannes quidem baptizavit         5.  For John truly baptized with water;
aqua vos autem baptizabimini Spiritu but ye shall be baptized with the Holy
Sancto non post multos hos dies Ghost not many days hence.

1:6 igitur qui convenerant 6. When they therefore were come
interrogabant eum dicentes Domine si in together, they asked of him, saying,
tempore hoc restitues regnum Israhel Lord, wilt thou at this time restore
                                             again the kingdom to Israel?

1:7 dixit autem eis non est vestrum 7. And he said unto them, It is not
nosse tempora vel momenta quae Pater for you to know the times or the
posuit in sua potestate seasons, which the Father hath put in
                                             his own power.

1:8 sed accipietis virtutem 8. But ye shall receive power, after
supervenientis Spiritus Sancti in vos that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:
et eritis mihi testes in Hierusalem et and ye shall be witnesses unto me both
in omni Iudaea et Samaria et usque ad in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in
ultimum terrae Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of
                                             the earth.

1:9 et cum haec dixisset videntibus 9. And when he had spoken these
illis elevatus est et nubes suscepit things, while they beheld, he was taken
eum ab oculis eorum up; and a cloud received him out of
                                             their sight.

1:10 cumque intuerentur in caelum 10. And while they looked stedfastly
eunte illo ecce duo viri adstiterunt toward heaven as he went up, behold,
iuxta illos in vestibus albis                two men stood by them in white apparel;

1:11 qui et dixerunt viri galilaei 11. Which also said, Ye men of
quid statis aspicientes in caelum hic Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into
Iesus qui adsumptus est a vobis in heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken
caelum sic veniet quemadmodum vidistis up from you into heaven, shall so come
eum euntem in caelum in like manner as ye have seen him go
                                             into heaven.

1:12 tunc reversi sunt Hierosolymam a 12. Then returned they unto Jerusalem
monte qui vocatur Oliveti qui est iuxta from the mount called Olivet, which is
Hierusalem sabbati habens iter from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

1:13 et cum introissent in cenaculum 13. And when they were come in, they
ascenderunt ubi manebant Petrus et went up into an upper room, where abode
Iohannes Iacobus et Andreas Philippus both Peter, and James, and John, and
et Thomas Bartholomeus et Mattheus Andrew, Philip, and Thomas,
Iacobus Alphei et Simon Zelotes et Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son
Iudas Iacobi of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and
                                             Judas the brother of James.

1:14 hii omnes erant perseverantes 14. These all continued with one
unianimiter in oratione cum mulieribus accord in prayer and supplication, with
et Maria matre Iesu et fratribus eius the women, and Mary the mother of
                                             Jesus, and with his brethren.

1:15 et in diebus illis exsurgens 15. And in those days Peter stood up
Petrus in medio fratrum dixit erat in the midst of the disciples, and
autem turba nominum simul fere centum said, (the number of names together
viginti were about an hundred and twenty,)

1:16 viri fratres oportet impleri 16. Men and brethren, this scripture
scripturam quam praedixit Spiritus must needs have been fulfilled, which
Sanctus per os David de Iuda qui fuit the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David
dux eorum qui conprehenderunt Iesum spake before concerning Judas, which
was guide to them that took Jesus.

1:17 quia connumeratus erat in nobis 17. For he was numbered with us, and
et sortitus est sortem ministerii huius had obtained part of this ministry.

1:18 et hic quidem possedit agrum de 18. Now this man purchased a field
mercede iniquitatis et suspensus with the reward of iniquity; and
crepuit medius et diffusa sunt omnia falling headlong, he burst asunder in
viscera eius the midst, and all his bowels gushed
                                             out.

1:19 et notum factum est omnibus 19. And it was known unto all the
habitantibus Hierusalem ita ut dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that
appellaretur ager ille lingua eorum field is called in their proper tongue,
Acheldemach hoc est ager Sanguinis Aceldama, that is to say, The field of
                                             blood.

1:20 scriptum est enim in libro 20. For it is written in the book of
Psalmorum fiat commoratio eius deserta Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate,
et non sit qui inhabitet in ea et and let no man dwell therein: and his
episcopatum eius accipiat alius bishoprick let another take.

1:21 oportet ergo ex his viris qui 21. Wherefore of these men which have
nobiscum congregati sunt in omni companied with us all the time that the
tempore quo intravit et exivit inter Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
nos Dominus Iesus

1:22 incipiens a baptismate Iohannis 22. Beginning from the baptism of
usque in diem qua adsumptus est a nobis John, unto that same day that he was
testem resurrectionis eius nobiscum taken up from us, must one be ordained
fieri unum ex istis to be a witness with us of his
                                             resurrection.

1:23 et statuerunt duos Ioseph qui 23. And they appointed two, Joseph
vocabatur Barsabban qui cognominatus called Barsabas, who was surnamed
est Iustus et Matthiam Justus, and Matthias.

1:24 et orantes dixerunt tu Domine qui 24. And they prayed, and said, Thou,
corda nosti omnium ostende quem Lord, which knowest the hearts of all
elegeris ex his duobus unum men, shew whether of these two thou
                                             hast chosen,

1:25 accipere locum ministerii huius 25. That he may take part of this
et apostolatus de quo praevaricatus est ministry and apostleship, from which
Iudas ut abiret in locum suum Judas by transgression fell, that he
might go to his own place.

1:26  et dederunt sortes eis et cecidit      26.  And they gave forth their lots;
sors super Matthiam et adnumeratus est and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he
cum undecim apostolis was numbered with the eleven apostles.
