23:1 intendens autem concilium Paulus 1. And Paul, earnestly beholding the
ait viri fratres ego omni conscientia council, said, Men and brethren, I have
bona conversatus sum ante Deum usque in lived in all good conscience before God
hodiernum diem until this day.

23:2 princeps autem sacerdotum Ananias 2. And the high priest Ananias
praecepit adstantibus sibi percutere os commanded them that stood by him to
eius smite him on the mouth.

23:3 tunc Paulus ad eum dixit 3. Then said Paul unto him, God shall
percutiet te Deus paries dealbate et tu smite thee, thou whited wall: for
sedens iudicas me secundum legem et sittest thou to judge me after the law,
contra legem iubes me percuti and commandest me to be smitten
                                             contrary to the law?

23:4 et qui adstabant dixerunt summum 4. And they that stood by said,
sacerdotem Dei maledicis Revilest thou God's high priest?

23:5 dixit autem Paulus nesciebam 5. Then said Paul, I wist not,
fratres quia princeps est sacerdotum brethren, that he was the high priest:
scriptum est enim principem populi tui for it is written, Thou shalt not speak
non maledices evil of the ruler of thy people.

23:6 sciens autem Paulus quia una pars 6. But when Paul perceived that the
esset Sadducaeorum et altera one part were Sadducees, and the other
Pharisaeorum exclamavit in concilio Pharisees, he cried out in the council,
viri fratres ego Pharisaeus sum filius Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the
Pharisaeorum de spe et resurrectione son of a Pharisee: of the hope and
mortuorum ego iudicor resurrection of the dead I am called in
                                             question.

23:7 et cum haec dixisset facta est 7. And when he had so said, there
dissensio inter Pharisaeos et arose a dissension between the
Sadducaeos et soluta est multitudo Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the
                                             multitude was divided.

23:8 Sadducaei enim dicunt non esse 8. For the Sadducees say that there is
resurrectionem neque angelum neque no resurrection, neither angel, nor
spiritum Pharisaei autem utrumque spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

23:9 factus est autem clamor magnus et 9. And there arose a great cry: and
surgentes quidam Pharisaeorum pugnabant the scribes that were of the Pharisees'

isto quod si spiritus locutus est ei no evil in this man: but if a spirit or
aut angelus an angel hath spoken to him, let us not
                                             fight against God.

23:10 et cum magna dissensio facta 10. And when there arose a great
esset timens tribunus ne discerperetur dissension, the chief captain, fearing
Paulus ab ipsis iussit milites lest Paul should have been pulled in
descendere et rapere eum de medio eorum pieces of them, commanded the soldiers
ac deducere eum in castra to go down, and to take him by force
from among them, and to bring him into
                                             the castle.

23:11 sequenti autem nocte adsistens 11. And the night following the Lord
ei Dominus ait constans esto sicut enim stood by him, and said, Be of good
testificatus es de me Hierusalem sic te cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified
oportet et Romae testificari of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear
                                             witness also at Rome.

23:12 facta autem die collegerunt se 12. And when it was day, certain of
quidam ex Iudaeis et devoverunt se the Jews banded together, and bound
dicentes neque manducaturos neque themselves under a curse, saying that
bibituros donec occiderent Paulum they would neither eat nor drink till
                                             they had killed Paul.

23:13 erant autem plus quam 13. And they were more than forty
quadraginta qui hanc coniurationem which had made this conspiracy.
fecerant

23:14 qui accesserunt ad principes 14. And they came to the chief priests
sacerdotum et seniores et dixerunt and elders, and said, We have bound
devotione devovimus nos nihil ourselves under a great curse, that we
gustaturos donec occidamus Paulum will eat nothing until we have slain
                                             Paul.

23:15 nunc ergo vos notum facite 15. Now therefore ye with the council
tribuno cum concilio ut producat illum signify to the chief captain that he
ad vos tamquam aliquid certius bring him down unto you to morrow, as
cognituri de eo nos vero priusquam though ye would enquire something more
adpropiet parati sumus interficere illum perfectly concerning him: and we, or
ever he come near, are ready to kill
                                             him.

23:16 quod cum audisset filius sororis 16. And when Paul's sister's son heard
Pauli insidias venit et intravit in of their lying in wait, he went and
castra nuntiavitque Paulo entered into the castle, and told Paul.

23:17 vocans autem Paulus ad se unum 17. Then Paul called one of the
ex centurionibus ait adulescentem hunc centurions unto him, and said, Bring
perduc ad tribunum habet enim aliquid this young man unto the chief captain:
indicare illi for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

23:18 et ille quidem adsumens eum 18. So he took him, and brought him to
duxit ad tribunum et ait vinctus Paulus the chief captain, and said, Paul the
vocans rogavit me hunc adulescentem prisoner called me unto him, and prayed
perducere ad te habentem aliquid loqui me to bring this young man unto thee,
tibi who hath something to say unto thee.

23:19 adprehendens autem tribunus 19. Then the chief captain took him by
manum illius secessit cum eo seorsum et the hand, and went with him aside
interrogavit illum quid est quod habes privately, and asked him, What is that
indicare mihi thou hast to tell me?

23:20 ille autem dixit Iudaeis 20. And he said, The Jews have agreed
convenit rogare te ut crastina die to desire thee that thou wouldest bring
Paulum producas in concilium quasi down Paul to morrow into the council,
aliquid certius inquisituri sint de illo as though they would enquire somewhat
                                             of him more perfectly.

23:21 tu vero ne credideris illis 21. But do not thou yield unto them:
insidiantur enim ei ex eis viri amplius for there lie in wait for him of them
quadraginta qui se devoverunt non more than forty men, which have bound
manducare neque bibere donec themselves with an oath, that they will
interficiant eum et nunc parati sunt neither eat nor drink till they have
expectantes promissum tuum killed him: and now are they ready,
looking for a promise from thee.

23:22 tribunus igitur dimisit 22. So the chief captain then let the
adulescentem praecipiens ne cui young man depart, and charged him, See
loqueretur quoniam haec nota sibi thou tell no man that thou hast shewed
fecisset these things to me.

23:23 et vocatis duobus centurionibus 23. And he called unto him two
dixit illis parate milites ducentos ut centurions, saying, Make ready two
eant usque Caesaream et equites hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and
septuaginta et lancearios ducentos a horsemen threescore and ten, and
tertia hora noctis spearmen two hundred, at the third hour
                                             of the night;

23:24 et iumenta praeparate ut 24. And provide them beasts, that they
inponentes Paulum salvum perducerent ad may set Paul on, and bring him safe
Felicem praesidem unto Felix the governor.

23:25 scribens Epistolam continentem 25. And he wrote a letter after this
haec: manner:

23:26 Claudius Lysias optimo 26. Claudius Lysias unto the most
praesidiFelici salutem excellent governor Felix sendeth
                                             greeting.

23:27 virum hunc conprehensum a 27. This man was taken of the Jews,
Iudaeis et incipientem interfici ab eis and should have been killed of them:
superveniens cum exercitu eripui then came I with an army, and rescued
cognito quia Romanus est him, having understood that he was a
                                             Roman.

23:28 volensque scire causam quam 28. And when I would have known the
obiciebant illi deduxi eum in concilium cause wherefore they accused him, I
eorum brought him forth into their council:

23:29 quem inveni accusari de 29. Whom I perceived to be accused of
quaestionibus legis ipsorum nihil vero questions of their law, but to have
dignum morte aut vinculis habentem nothing laid to his charge worthy of
crimen death or of bonds.

23:30 et cum mihi perlatum esset de 30. And when it was told me how that
insidiis quas paraverunt ei misi ad te the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent
denuntians et accusatoribus ut dicant straightway to thee, and gave
apud te commandment to his accusers also to say
before thee what they had against him.
                                             Farewell.

23:31 milites ergo secundum praeceptum 31. Then the soldiers, as it was

noctem in Antipatridem him by night to Antipatris.

23:32 et postera die dimissis 32. On the morrow they left the
equitibus ut irent cum eo reversi sunt horsemen to go with him, and returned
ad castra to the castle:

23:33 qui cum venissent Caesaream et 33. Who, when they came to Caesarea
tradidissent Epistolam praesidi and delivered the epistle to the

                                             him.

23:34 cum legisset autem et 34. And when the governor had read the

                                             of Cilicia;

23:35 audiam te inquit cum et 35. I will hear thee, said he, when
accusatores tui venerint iussitque in thine accusers are also come. And he
praetorio Herodis custodiri eum commanded him to be kept in Herod's
                                             judgment hall.
