5:1 vir autem quidam nomine Ananias 1. But a certain man named Ananias,
cum Saffira uxore sua vendidit agrum with Sapphira his wife, sold a
possession,
5:2 et fraudavit de pretio agri 2. And kept back part of the price,
conscia uxore sua et adferens partem his wife also being privy to it, and
quandam ad pedes apostolorum posuit brought a certain part, and laid it at
the apostles' feet.
5:3 dixit autem Petrus Anania cur 3. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath
temptavit Satanas cor tuum mentiri te Satan filled thine heart to lie to the
Spiritui Sancto et fraudare de pretio Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of
agri the price of the land?
5:4 nonne manens tibi manebat et 4. Whiles it remained, was it not
venundatum in tua erat potestate quare thine own? and after it was sold, was
posuisti in corde tuo hanc rem non es it not in thine own power? why hast
mentitus hominibus sed Deo thou conceived this thing in thine
heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but
unto God.
5:5 audiens autem Ananias haec verba 5. And Ananias hearing these words
cecidit et exspiravit et factus est fell down, and gave up the ghost: and
timor magnus in omnes qui audierant great fear came on all them that heard
these things.
5:6 surgentes autem iuvenes amoverunt 6. And the young men arose, wound him
eum et efferentes sepelierunt up, and carried him out, and buried him.
5:7 factum est autem quasi horarum 7. And it was about the space of three
trium spatium et uxor ipsius nesciens hours after, when his wife, not knowing
quod factum fuerat introiit what was done, came in.
5:8 respondit autem ei Petrus dic mihi 8. And Peter answered unto her, Tell
si tanti agrum vendidistis at illa me whether ye sold the land for so
dixit etiam tanti much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
5:9 Petrus autem ad eam quid utique 9. Then Peter said unto her, How is it
convenit vobis temptare Spiritum Domini that ye have agreed together to tempt
ecce pedes eorum qui sepelierunt virum the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the
tuum ad ostium et efferent te feet of them which have buried thy
husband are at the door, and shall
carry thee out.
5:10 confestim cecidit ante pedes eius 10. Then fell she down straightway at
et exspiravit intrantes autem iuvenes his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and
invenerunt illam mortuam et extulerunt the young men came in, and found her
et sepelierunt ad virum suum dead, and, carrying her forth, buried
her by her husband.
5:11 et factus est timor magnus in 11. And great fear came upon all the
universa ecclesia et in omnes qui church, and upon as many as heard these
audierunt haec things.
5:12 per manus autem apostolorum 12. And by the hands of the apostles
fiebant signa et prodigia multa in were many signs and wonders wrought
plebe et erant unianimiter omnes in among the people; (and they were all
porticu Salomonis with one accord in Solomon's porch.
5:13 ceterorum autem nemo audebat 13. And of the rest durst no man join
coniungere se illis sed magnificabat himself to them: but the people
eos populus magnified them.
5:14 magis autem augebatur credentium 14. And believers were the more added
in Domino multitudo virorum ac mulierum to the Lord, multitudes both of men and
women.)
5:15 ita ut in plateas eicerent 15. Insomuch that they brought forth
infirmos et ponerent in lectulis et the sick into the streets, and laid
grabattis ut veniente Petro saltim them on beds and couches, that at the
umbra illius obumbraret quemquam eorum least the shadow of Peter passing by
might overshadow some of them.
5:16 concurrebat autem et multitudo 16. There came also a multitude out of
vicinarum civitatum Hierusalem the cities round about unto Jerusalem,
adferentes aegros et vexatos ab bringing sick folks, and them which
spiritibus inmundis qui curabantur omnes were vexed with unclean spirits: and
they were healed every one.
5:17 exsurgens autem princeps 17. Then the high priest rose up, and
sacerdotum et omnes qui cum illo erant all they that were with him, (which is
quae est heresis Sadducaeorum repleti the sect of the Sadducees,) and were
sunt zelo filled with indignation,
5:18 et iniecerunt manus in apostolos 18. And laid their hands on the
et posuerunt illos in custodia publica apostles, and put them in the common
prison.
5:19 angelus autem Domini per noctem 19. But the angel of the Lord by night
aperiens ianuas carceris et educens eos opened the prison doors, and brought
dixit them forth, and said,
5:20 ite et stantes loquimini in 20. Go, stand and speak in the temple
templo plebi omnia verba vitae huius to the people all the words of this
life.
5:21 qui cum audissent intraverunt 21. And when they heard that, they
diluculo in templum et docebant entered into the temple early in the
adveniens autem princeps sacerdotum et morning, and taught. But the high
qui cum eo erant convocaverunt priest came, and they that were with
concilium et omnes seniores filiorum him, and called the council together,
Israhel et miserunt in carcerem ut and all the senate of the children of
adducerentur Israel, and sent to the prison to have
them brought.
5:22 cum venissent autem ministri et 22. But when the officers came, and
aperto carcere non invenissent illos found them not in the prison, they
reversi nuntiaverunt returned and told,
5:23 dicentes carcerem quidem 23. Saying, The prison truly found we
invenimus clausum cum omni diligentia shut with all safety, and the keepers
et custodes stantes ad ianuas standing without before the doors: but
aperientes autem neminem intus invenimus when we had opened, we found no man
within.
5:24 ut audierunt autem hos sermones 24. Now when the high priest and the
magistratus templi et principes captain of the temple and the chief
sacerdotum ambigebant de illis quidnam priests heard these things, they
fieret doubted of them whereunto this would
grow.
5:25 adveniens autem quidam nuntiavit 25. Then came one and told them,
eis quia ecce viri quos posuistis in saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in
carcere sunt in templo stantes et prison are standing in the temple, and
docentes populum teaching the people.
5:26 tunc abiit magistratus cum 26. Then went the captain with the
ministris et adduxit illos sine vi officers, and brought them without
timebant enim populum ne lapidarentur violence: for they feared the people,
lest they should have been stoned.
5:27 et cum adduxissent illos 27. And when they had brought them,
statuerunt in concilio et interrogavit they set them before the council: and
eos princeps sacerdotum the high priest asked them,
5:28 dicens praecipiendo praecepimus 28. Saying, Did not we straitly
vobis ne doceretis in nomine isto et command you that ye should not teach in
ecce replestis Hierusalem doctrina this name? and, behold, ye have filled
vestra et vultis inducere super nos Jerusalem with your doctrine, and
sanguinem hominis istius intend to bring this man's blood upon
us.
5:29 respondens autem Petrus et 29. Then Peter and the other apostles
apostoli dixerunt oboedire oportet Deo answered and said, We ought to obey God
magis quam hominibus rather than men.
5:30 Deus patrum nostrorum suscitavit 30. The God of our fathers raised up
Iesum quem vos interemistis Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a
suspendentes in ligno tree.
5:31 hunc Deus principem et salvatorem 31. Him hath God exalted with his
exaltavit dextera sua ad dandam right hand to be a Prince and a
paenitentiam Israhel et remissionem Saviour, for to give repentance to
peccatorum Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
5:32 et nos sumus testes horum 32. And we are his witnesses of these
verborum et Spiritus Sanctus quem dedit things; and so is also the Holy Ghost,
Deus omnibus oboedientibus sibi whom God hath given to them that obey
him.
5:33 haec cum audissent dissecabantur 33. When they heard that, they were
et cogitabant interficere illos cut to the heart, and took counsel to
slay them.
5:34 surgens autem quidam in concilio 34. Then stood there up one in the
Pharisaeus nomine Gamalihel legis council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a
doctor honorabilis universae plebi doctor of the law, had in reputation
iussit foras ad breve homines fieri among all the people, and commanded to
put the apostles forth a little space;
5:35 dixitque ad illos viri 35. And said unto them, Ye men of
israhelitae adtendite vobis super Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye
hominibus istis quid acturi sitis intend to do as touching these men.
5:36 ante hos enim dies extitit 36. For before these days rose up
Theodas dicens esse se aliquem cui Theudas, boasting himself to be
consensit virorum numerus circiter somebody; to whom a number of men,
quadringentorum qui occisus est et about four hundred, joined themselves:
omnes quicumque credebant ei dissipati who was slain; and all, as many as
sunt et redactus est ad nihilum obeyed him, were scattered, and brought
to nought.
5:37 post hunc extitit Iudas Galilaeus 37. After this man rose up Judas of
in diebus professionis et avertit Galilee in the days of the taxing, and
populum post se et ipse periit et omnes drew away much people after him: he
quotquot consenserunt ei dispersi sunt also perished; and all, even as many as
obeyed him, were dispersed.
5:38 et nunc itaque dico vobis 38. And now I say unto you, Refrain
discedite ab hominibus istis et sinite from these men, and let them alone: for
illos quoniam si est ex hominibus if this counsel or this work be of men,
consilium hoc aut opus dissolvetur it will come to nought:
5:39 si vero ex Deo est non poteritis 39. But if it be of God, ye cannot
dissolvere eos ne forte et Deo overthrow it; lest haply ye be found
repugnare inveniamini consenserunt even to fight against God.
autem illi
5:40 et convocantes apostolos caesis 40. And to him they agreed: and when
denuntiaverunt ne loquerentur in nomine they had called the apostles, and
Iesu et dimiserunt eos beaten them, they commanded that they
should not speak in the name of Jesus,
and let them go.
5:41 et illi quidem ibant gaudentes a 41. And they departed from the
conspectu concilii quoniam digni habiti presence of the council, rejoicing that
sunt pro nomine Iesu contumeliam pati they were counted worthy to suffer
shame for his name.
5:42 omni autem die in templo et circa 42. And daily in the temple, and in
domos non cessabant docentes et every house, they ceased not to teach
evangelizantes Christum Iesum and preach Jesus Christ.
