10:1 vir autem quidam erat in Caesarea 1. There was a certain man in Caesarea
nomine Cornelius centurio cohortis quae called Cornelius, a centurion of the

10:2 religiosus et timens Deum cum 2. A devout man, and one that feared
omni domo sua faciens elemosynas multas God with all his house, which gave much
plebi et deprecans Deum semper alms to the people, and prayed to God
                                             alway.

10:3 vidit in visu manifeste quasi 3. He saw in a vision evidently about
hora nona diei angelum Dei introeuntem the ninth hour of the day an angel of
ad se et dicentem sibi Corneli God coming in to him, and saying unto
                                             him, Cornelius.

10:4 at ille intuens eum timore 4. And when he looked on him, he was
correptus dixit quid est domine dixit afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And
autem illi orationes tuae et elemosynae he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine
tuae ascenderunt in memoriam in alms are come up for a memorial before
conspectu Dei God.

10:5 et nunc mitte viros in Ioppen et 5. And now send men to Joppa, and call
accersi Simonem quendam qui for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
cognominatur Petrus

10:6 hic hospitatur apud Simonem 6. He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner,
quendam coriarium cuius est domus iuxta whose house is by the sea side: he
mare shall tell thee what thou oughtest to
                                             do.

10:7 et cum discessisset angelus qui 7. And when the angel which spake unto
loquebatur illi vocavit duos domesticos Cornelius was departed, he called two
suos et militem metuentem Dominum ex of his household servants, and a devout
his qui illi parebant soldier of them that waited on him
                                             continually;

10:8 quibus cum narrasset omnia misit 8. And when he had declared all these
illos in Ioppen things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

10:9 postera autem die iter illis 9. On the morrow, as they went on
facientibus et adpropinquantibus their journey, and drew nigh unto the
civitati ascendit Petrus in superiora city, Peter went up upon the housetop
ut oraret circa horam sextam to pray about the sixth hour:

10:10 et cum esuriret voluit gustare 10. And he became very hungry, and
parantibus autem eis cecidit super eum would have eaten: but while they made
mentis excessus ready, he fell into a trance,

10:11 et videt caelum apertum et 11. And saw heaven opened, and a
descendens vas quoddam velut linteum certain vessel descending upon him, as
magnum quattuor initiis submitti de it had been a great sheet knit at the
caelo in terram four corners, and let down to the earth:

10:12 in quo erant omnia quadrupedia 12. Wherein were all manner of
et serpentia terrae et volatilia caeli fourfooted beasts of the earth, and
wild beasts, and creeping things, and
                                             fowls of the air.

10:13 et facta est vox ad eum surge 13. And there came a voice to him,
Petre et occide et manduca Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

10:14 ait autem Petrus absit Domine 14. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for
quia numquam manducavi omne commune et I have never eaten any thing that is
inmundum common or unclean.

10:15 et vox iterum secundo ad eum 15. And the voice spake unto him again
quae Deus purificavit ne tu commune the second time, What God hath
dixeris cleansed, that call not thou common.

10:16 hoc autem factum est per ter et 16. This was done thrice: and the
statim receptum est vas in caelum vessel was received up again into
                                             heaven.

10:17 et dum intra se haesitaret 17. Now while Peter doubted in himself
Petrus quidnam esset visio quam what this vision which he had seen
vidisset ecce viri qui missi erant a should mean, behold, the men which were
Cornelio inquirentes domum Simonis sent from Cornelius had made enquiry
adstiterunt ad ianuam for Simon's house, and stood before the
                                             gate,

10:18 et cum vocassent interrogabant 18. And called, and asked whether
si Simon qui cognominatur Petrus illic Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were
haberet hospitium lodged there.

10:19 Petro autem cogitante de visione 19. While Peter thought on the vision,
dixit Spiritus ei ecce viri tres the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three
quaerunt te men seek thee.

10:20 surge itaque et descende et vade 20. Arise therefore, and get thee
cum eis nihil dubitans quia ego misi down, and go with them, doubting
illos nothing: for I have sent them.

10:21 descendens autem Petrus ad viros 21. Then Peter went down to the men
dixit ecce ego sum quem quaeritis quae which were sent unto him from
causa est propter quam venistis Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he
whom ye seek: what is the cause
                                             wherefore ye are come?

10:22 qui dixerunt Cornelius centurio 22. And they said, Cornelius the
vir iustus et timens Deum et centurion, a just man, and one that
testimonium habens ab universa gente feareth God, and of good report among
Iudaeorum responsum accepit ab angelo all the nation of the Jews, was warned
sancto accersire te in domum suam et from God by an holy angel to send for
audire verba abs te thee into his house, and to hear words
                                             of thee.

10:23 introducens igitur eos recepit 23. Then called he them in, and lodged
hospitio sequenti autem die surgens them. And on the morrow Peter went away
profectus est cum eis et quidam ex with them, and certain brethren from
fratribus ab Ioppe comitati sunt eum Joppa accompanied him.

10:24 altera autem die introivit 24. And the morrow after they entered
Caesaream Cornelius vero expectabat into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for
illos convocatis cognatis suis et them, and he had called together his
necessariis amicis kinsmen and near friends.

10:25 et factum est cum introisset 25. And as Peter was coming in,
Petrus obvius ei Cornelius et procidens Cornelius met him, and fell down at his
ad pedes adoravit feet, and worshipped him.

10:26 Petrus vero levavit eum dicens 26. But Peter took him up, saying,
surge et ego ipse homo sum Stand up; I myself also am a man.

10:27 et loquens cum illo intravit et 27. And as he talked with him, he went
invenit multos qui convenerant in, and found many that were come
                                             together.

10:28 dixitque ad illos vos scitis 28. And he said unto them, Ye know how
quomodo abominatum sit viro iudaeo that it is an unlawful thing for a man
coniungi aut accedere ad alienigenam et that is a Jew to keep company, or come
mihi ostendit Deus neminem communem aut unto one of another nation; but God
inmundum dicere hominem hath shewed me that I should not call
                                             any man common or unclean.

10:29 propter quod sine dubitatione 29. Therefore came I unto you without
veni accersitus interrogo ergo quam ob gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for:
causam accersistis me I ask therefore for what intent ye have
                                             sent for me?

10:30 et Cornelius ait a nudius 30. And Cornelius said, Four days ago
quartana die usque in hanc horam orans I was fasting until this hour; and at
eram hora nona in domo mea et ecce vir the ninth hour I prayed in my house,
stetit ante me in veste candida et ait and, behold, a man stood before me in
                                             bright clothing,

10:31 Corneli exaudita est oratio tua 31. And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is
et elemosynae tuae commemoratae sunt in heard, and thine alms are had in
conspectu Dei remembrance in the sight of God.

10:32 mitte ergo in Ioppen et accersi 32. Send therefore to Joppa, and call
Simonem qui cognominatur Petrus hic          hither Simon, whose surname is Peter;
hospitatur in domo Simonis coriarii he is lodged in the house of one Simon
iuxta mare a tanner by the sea side: who, when he
                                             cometh, shall speak unto thee.

10:33 confestim igitur misi ad te et 33. Immediately therefore I sent to
tu bene fecisti veniendo nunc ergo thee; and thou hast well done that thou
omnes nos in conspectu tuo adsumus art come. Now therefore are we all here
audire omnia quaecumque tibi praecepta present before God, to hear all things
sunt a Domino that are commanded thee of God.

10:34 aperiens autem Petrus os dixit 34. Then Peter opened his mouth, and
in veritate conperi quoniam non est said, Of a truth I perceive that God is
personarum acceptor Deus no respecter of persons:

10:35 sed in omni gente qui timet eum 35. But in every nation he that
et operatur iustitiam acceptus est illi feareth him, and worketh righteousness,
                                             is accepted with him.

10:36 verbum misit filiis Israhel 36. The word which God sent unto the
adnuntians pacem per Iesum Christum hic children of Israel, preaching peace by
est omnium Dominus Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

10:37 vos scitis quod factum est 37. That word, I say, ye know, which
verbum per universam Iudaeam incipiens was published throughout all Judaea,
enim a Galilaea post baptismum quod and began from Galilee, after the
praedicavit Iohannes                         baptism which John preached;

10:38 Iesum a Nazareth quomodo unxit 38. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
eum Deus Spiritu Sancto et virtute qui with the Holy Ghost and with power: who
pertransivit benefaciendo et sanando went about doing good, and healing all
omnes oppressos a diabolo quoniam Deus that were oppressed of the devil; for
erat cum illo God was with him.

10:39 et nos testes sumus omnium quae 39. And we are witnesses of all things
fecit in regione Iudaeorum et which he did both in the land of the
Hierusalem quem et occiderunt Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew
suspendentes in ligno and hanged on a tree:

10:40 hunc Deus suscitavit tertia die 40. Him God raised up the third day,
et dedit eum manifestum fieri                and shewed him openly;

10:41 non omni populo sed testibus 41. Not to all the people, but unto
praeordinatis a Deo nobis qui witnesses chosen before God, even to
manducavimus et bibimus cum illo us, who did eat and drink with him
postquam resurrexit a mortuis after he rose from the dead.

10:42 et praecepit nobis praedicare 42. And he commanded us to preach unto
populo et testificari quia ipse est qui the people, and to testify that it is
constitutus est a Deo iudex vivorum et he which was ordained of God to be the
mortuorum Judge of quick and dead.

10:43 huic omnes prophetae testimonium 43. To him give all the prophets
perhibent remissionem peccatorum witness, that through his name
accipere per nomen eius omnes qui whosoever believeth in him shall
credunt in eum receive remission of sins.

10:44 adhuc loquente Petro verba haec 44. While Peter yet spake these words,
cecidit Spiritus Sanctus super omnes the Holy Ghost fell on all them which
qui audiebant verbum heard the word.

10:45 et obstipuerunt ex circumcisione 45. And they of the circumcision which
fideles qui venerant cum Petro quia et believed were astonished, as many as
in nationes gratia Spiritus Sancti came with Peter, because that on the
effusa est Gentiles also was poured out the gift
                                             of the Holy Ghost.

10:46 audiebant enim illos loquentes 46. For they heard them speak with
linguis et magnificantes Deum tongues, and magnify God. Then answered
                                             Peter,

10:47 tunc respondit Petrus numquid 47. Can any man forbid water, that
aquam quis prohibere potest ut non these should not be baptized, which
baptizentur hii qui Spiritum Sanctum have received the Holy Ghost as well as
acceperunt sicut et nos we?

10:48 et iussit eos in nomine Iesu 48. And he commanded them to be
Christi baptizari tunc rogaverunt eum baptized in the name of the Lord. Then
ut maneret aliquot diebus prayed they him to tarry certain days.
