16:1 pervenit autem in Derben et 1. Then came he to Derbe and Lystra:
Lystram et ecce discipulus quidam erat and, behold, a certain disciple was
ibi nomine Timotheus filius mulieris there, named Timotheus, the son of a
iudaeae fidelis patre gentili certain woman, which was a Jewess, and
believed; but his father was a Greek:

16:3 hunc voluit Paulus secum 3. Him would Paul have to go forth
proficisci et adsumens circumcidit eum with him; and took and circumcised him
propter Iudaeos qui erant in illis because of the Jews which were in those
locis sciebant enim omnes quod pater quarters: for they knew all that his

16:4 cum autem pertransirent civitates 4. And as they went through the

16:5 et ecclesiae quidem 5. And so were the churches
confirmabantur fide et abundabant established in the faith, and increased

16:6 transeuntes autem Frygiam et 6. Now when they had gone throughout
Galatiae regionem vetati sunt a Sancto Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and
Spiritu loqui verbum in Asia were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to
                                             preach the word in Asia,

16:7 cum venissent autem in Mysiam 7. After they were come to Mysia, they
temptabant ire Bithyniam et non assayed to go into Bithynia: but the
permisit eos Spiritus Iesu Spirit suffered them not.

16:8 cum autem pertransissent Mysiam 8. And they passing by Mysia came down
descenderunt Troadem to Troas.

16:9 et visio per noctem Paulo ostensa 9. And a vision appeared to Paul in

16:10 ut autem visum vidit statim 10. And after he had seen the vision,
quaesivimus proficisci in Macedoniam immediately we endeavoured to go into

16:11 navigantes autem a Troade recto 11. Therefore loosing from Troas, we
cursu venimus Samothraciam et sequenti came with a straight course to

16:13 die autem sabbatorum egressi 13. And on the sabbath we went out of
sumus foras portam iuxta flumen ubi the city by a river side, where prayer
videbatur oratio esse et sedentes was wont to be made; and we sat down,
loquebamur mulieribus quae convenerant and spake unto the women which resorted
                                             thither.

16:14 et quaedam mulier nomine Lydia 14. And a certain woman named Lydia, a

16:15 cum autem baptizata esset et 15. And when she was baptized, and her
domus eius deprecata est dicens si household, she besought us, saying, If
iudicastis me fidelem Domino esse ye have judged me to be faithful to the

16:16 factum est autem euntibus nobis 16. And it came to pass, as we went to
ad orationem puellam quandam habentem prayer, a certain damsel possessed with
spiritum pythonem obviare nobis quae a spirit of divination met us, which
quaestum magnum praestabat dominis suis brought her masters much gain by
divinando soothsaying:

16:17 haec subsecuta Paulum et nos 17. The same followed Paul and us, and
clamabat dicens isti homines servi Dei cried, saying, These men are the
excelsi sunt qui adnuntiant vobis viam servants of the most high God, which
salutis shew unto us the way of salvation.

16:18 hoc autem faciebat multis diebus 18. And this did she many days. But
dolens autem Paulus et conversus Paul, being grieved, turned and said to
spiritui dixit praecipio tibi in nomine the spirit, I command thee in the name
Iesu Christi exire ab ea et exiit eadem of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And

adprehendentes Paulum et Silam caught Paul and Silas, and drew them
perduxerunt in forum ad principes into the marketplace unto the rulers,

16:20 et offerentes eos magistratibus 20. And brought them to the
dixerunt hii homines conturbant magistrates, saying, These men, being
civitatem nostram cum sint Iudaei Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

simus Romani observe, being Romans.

16:22 et concurrit plebs adversus eos 22. And the multitude rose up together
et magistratus scissis tunicis eorum against them: and the magistrates rent
iusserunt virgis caedi off their clothes, and commanded to
                                             beat them.

16:23 et cum multas plagas eis 23. And when they had laid many

praecipientes custodi ut diligenter prison, charging the jailor to keep

carcerem et pedes eorum strinxit in prison, and made their feet fast in the
ligno stocks.

16:25 media autem nocte Paulus et 25. And at midnight Paul and Silas
Silas adorantes laudabant Deum et prayed, and sang praises unto God: and
audiebant eos qui in custodia erant the prisoners heard them.

16:26 subito vero terraemotus factus 26. And suddenly there was a great

carceris et aperta sunt statim ostia the prison were shaken: and immediately
omnia et universorum vincula soluta sunt all the doors were opened, and every

16:27 expergefactus autem custos 27. And the keeper of the prison
carceris et videns apertas ianuas awaking out of his sleep, and seeing
carceris evaginato gladio volebat se the prison doors open, he drew out his

supposing that the prisoners had been
                                             fled.

16:28 clamavit autem Paulus magna voce 28. But Paul cried with a loud voice,
dicens nihil feceris tibi mali universi saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are
enim hic sumus all here.

16:29 petitoque lumine introgressus 29. Then he called for a light, and
est et tremefactus procidit Paulo et sprang in, and came trembling, and fell
Silae down before Paul and Silas,

16:30 et producens eos foras ait 30. And brought them out, and said,
domini quid me oportet facere ut salvus Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

16:31 at illi dixerunt crede in Domino 31. And they said, Believe on the Lord
Iesu et salvus eris tu et domus tua Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,
                                             and thy house.

16:32 et locuti sunt ei verbum Domini 32. And they spake unto him the word
cum omnibus qui erant in domo eius of the Lord, and to all that were in
                                             his house.

16:33 et tollens eos in illa hora 33. And he took them the same hour of
noctis lavit plagas eorum et baptizatus      the night, and washed their stripes;
est ipse et omnes eius continuo and was baptized, he and all his,
                                             straightway.

16:34 cumque perduxisset eos in domum 34. And when he had brought them into
suam adposuit eis mensam et laetatus his house, he set meat before them, and
est cum omni domo sua credens Deo rejoiced, believing in God with all his
                                             house.

16:35 et cum dies factus esset 35. And when it was day, the
miserunt magistratus lictores dicentes magistrates sent the serjeants, saying,
dimitte homines illos Let those men go.

16:36 nuntiavit autem custos carceris 36. And the keeper of the prison told
verba haec Paulo quia miserunt this saying to Paul, The magistrates
magistratus ut dimittamini nunc igitur have sent to let you go: now therefore
exeuntes ite in pace depart, and go in peace.

16:37 Paulus autem dixit eis caesos 37. But Paul said unto them, They have
nos publice indemnatos homines romanos beaten us openly uncondemned, being
miserunt in carcerem et nunc occulte         Romans, and have cast us into prison;
nos eiciunt non ita sed veniant and now do they thrust us out privily?
nay verily; but let them come
                                             themselves and fetch us out.

16:38 et ipsi nos eiciant nuntiaverunt 38. And the serjeants told these words
autem magistratibus lictores verba haec unto the magistrates: and they feared,
timueruntque audito quod Romani essent when they heard that they were Romans.

16:39 et venientes deprecati sunt eos 39. And they came and besought them,
et educentes rogabant ut egrederentur and brought them out, and desired them
urbem to depart out of the city.

16:40 exeuntes autem de carcere 40. And they went out of the prison,
introierunt ad Lydiam et visis and entered into the house of Lydia:
fratribus consolati sunt eos et and when they had seen the brethren,
profecti sunt they comforted them, and departed.
