28:1  et cum evasissemus tunc                1.  And when they were escaped, then
cognovimus quia Militene insula vocatur      they knew that the island was called
barbari vero praestabant non modicam         Melita.
humanitatem nobis

28:2  accensa enim pyra reficiebant nos      2.  And the barbarous people shewed us
omnes propter imbrem qui inminebat et        no little kindness: for they kindled a
frigus                                       fire, and received us every one,
                                             because of the present rain, and
                                             because of the cold.

28:3  cum congregasset autem Paulus          3.  And when Paul had gathered a bundle
sarmentorum aliquantam multitudinem et       of sticks, and laid them on the fire,
inposuisset super ignem vipera a calore      there came a viper out of the heat, and
cum processisset invasit manum eius          fastened on his hand.

28:4  ut vero viderunt barbari               4.  And when the barbarians saw the
pendentem bestiam de manu eius ad            venomous beast hang on his hand, they
invicem dicebant utique homicida est         said among themselves, No doubt this
homo hic qui cum evaserit de mari Ultio      man is a murderer, whom, though he hath
non sinit vivere                             escaped the sea, yet vengeance
                                             suffereth not to live.

28:5  et ille quidem excutiens bestiam       5.  And he shook off the beast into the
in ignem nihil mali passus est               fire, and felt no harm.

28:6  at illi existimabant eum in            6.  Howbeit they looked when he should

28:7  in locis autem illis erant             7.  In the same quarters were
praedia principis insulae nomine Publii      possessions of the chief man of the

28:10  qui etiam multis honoribus nos        10.  Who also honoured us with many
honoraverunt et navigantibus                 honours; and when we departed, they
inposuerunt quae necessaria erant            laded us with such things as were
                                             necessary.

28:11  post menses autem tres                11.  And after three months we departed
navigavimus in nave alexandrina quae in      in a ship of Alexandria, which had
insula hiemaverat cui erat insigne           wintered in the isle, whose sign was
Castorum                                     Castor and Pollux.

28:12  et cum venissemus Syracusam           12.  And landing at Syracuse, we
mansimus ibi triduo                          tarried there three days.

28:13  inde circumlegentes devenimus         13.  And from thence we fetched a
Regium et post unum diem flante austro       compass, and came to Rhegium: and after
secunda die venimus Puteolos                 one day the south wind blew, and we
                                             came the next day to Puteoli:

28:14  ubi inventis fratribus rogati         14.  Where we found brethren, and were
sumus manere apud eos dies septem et         desired to tarry with them seven days:
sic venimus Romam                            and so we went toward Rome.

28:15  et inde cum audissent fratres         15.  And from thence, when the brethren
occurrerunt nobis usque ad Appii Forum       heard of us, they came to meet us as
et Tribus Tabernis quos cum vidisset         far as Appii forum, and The three
Paulus gratias agens Deo accepit             taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked
fiduciam                                     God, and took courage.

28:16  cum venissemus autem Romam            16.  And when we came to Rome, the

aut morem paternum vinctus ab                brethren, though I have committed

                                             prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands
                                             of the Romans.

28:18  qui cum interrogationem de me         18.  Who, when they had examined me,
habuissent voluerunt me dimittere eo         would have let me go, because there was
quod nulla causa esset mortis in me          no cause of death in me.

28:19  contradicentibus autem Iudaeis        19.  But when the Jews spake against

28:20  propter hanc igitur causam            20.  For this cause therefore have I

28:21  at illi dixerunt ad eum nos           21.  And they said unto him, We neither
neque litteras accepimus de te a Iudaea      received letters out of Judaea
neque adveniens aliquis fratrum              concerning thee, neither any of the
nuntiavit aut locutus est quid de te         brethren that came shewed or spake any
malum                                        harm of thee.

28:22  rogamus autem a te audire quae        22.  But we desire to hear of thee what
sentis nam de secta hac notum est nobis      thou thinkest: for as concerning this
quia ubique ei contradicitur                 sect, we know that every where it is
                                             spoken against.

28:23  cum constituissent autem illi         23.  And when they had appointed him a
diem venerunt ad eum in hospitium            day, there came many to him into his
plures quibus exponebat testificans          lodging; to whom he expounded and
regnum Dei suadensque eos de Iesu ex         testified the kingdom of God,
lege Mosi et prophetis a mane usque ad       persuading them concerning Jesus, both
vesperam                                     out of the law of Moses, and out of the
                                             prophets, from morning till evening.

28:24  et quidam credebant his quae          24.  And some believed the things which
dicebantur quidam vero non credebant         were spoken, and some believed not.

28:25  cumque invicem non essent             25.  And when they agreed not among
consentientes discedebant dicente Paulo      themselves, they departed, after that
unum verbum quia bene Spiritus Sanctus       Paul had spoken one word, Well spake
locutus est per Esaiam prophetam ad          the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet
patres nostros                               unto our fathers,

28:26  dicens vade ad populum istum et       26.  Saying, Go unto this people, and
dic aure audietis et non intellegetis        say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall
et videntes videbitis et non                 not understand; and seeing ye shall
perspicietis                                 see, and not perceive:

28:27  incrassatum est enim cor populi       27.  For the heart of this people is
huius et auribus graviter audierunt et       waxed gross, and their ears are dull of
oculos suos conpresserunt ne forte           hearing, and their eyes have they
videant oculis et auribus audiant et         closed; lest they should see with their
corde intellegant et convertantur et         eyes, and hear with their ears, and
sanem illos                                  understand with their heart, and should
                                             be converted, and I should heal them.

28:28  notum ergo sit vobis quoniam          28.  Be it known therefore unto you,
gentibus missum est hoc salutare Dei         that the salvation of God is sent unto
ipsi et audient                              the Gentiles, and that they will hear
                                             it.

28:29  []                                    29.  And when he had said these words,
                                             the Jews departed, and had great
                                             reasoning among themselves.

28:30  mansit autem biennio toto in suo      30.  And Paul dwelt two whole years in
conducto et suscipiebat omnes qui            his own hired house, and received all
ingrediebantur ad eum                        that came in unto him,

28:31  praedicans regnum Dei et docens       31.  Preaching the kingdom of God, and
quae sunt de Domino Iesu Christo cum         teaching those things which concern the
omni fiducia sine prohibitione               Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence,
                                             no man forbidding him.
