19:1 factum est autem cum Apollo esset 1. And it came to pass, that, while
Corinthi ut Paulus peragratis Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having
superioribus partibus veniret Ephesum passed through the upper coasts came to
et inveniret quosdam discipulos Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
19:2 dixitque ad eos si Spiritum 2. He said unto them, Have ye received
Sanctum accepistis credentes at illi ad the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And
eum sed neque si Spiritus Sanctus est they said unto him, We have not so much
audivimus as heard whether there be any Holy
Ghost.
19:3 ille vero ait in quo ergo 3. And he said unto them, Unto what
baptizati estis qui dixerunt in then were ye baptized? And they said,
Iohannis baptismate Unto John's baptism.
19:4 dixit autem Paulus Iohannes 4. Then said Paul, John verily
baptizavit baptisma paenitentiae baptized with the baptism of
populum dicens in eum qui venturus repentance, saying unto the people,
esset post ipsum ut crederent hoc est that they should believe on him which
in Iesum should come after him, that is, on
Christ Jesus.
19:5 his auditis baptizati sunt in 5. When they heard this, they were
nomine Domini Iesu baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
19:6 et cum inposuisset illis manum 6. And when Paul had laid his hands
Paulus venit Spiritus Sanctus super eos upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them;
et loquebantur linguis et prophetabant and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
19:7 erant autem omnes viri fere 7. And all the men were about twelve.
duodecim
19:8 introgressus autem synagogam cum 8. And he went into the synagogue, and
fiducia loquebatur per tres menses spake boldly for the space of three
disputans et suadens de regno Dei months, disputing and persuading the
things concerning the kingdom of God.
19:9 cum autem quidam indurarentur et 9. But when divers were hardened, and
non crederent maledicentes viam coram believed not, but spake evil of that
multitudine discedens ab eis segregavit way before the multitude, he departed
discipulos cotidie disputans in scola from them, and separated the disciples,
Tyranni disputing daily in the school of one
Tyrannus.
19:10 hoc autem factum est per 10. And this continued by the space of
biennium ita ut omnes qui habitabant in two years; so that all they which dwelt
Asia audirent verbum Domini Iudaei in Asia heard the word of the Lord
atque gentiles Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
19:11 virtutesque non quaslibet Deus 11. And God wrought special miracles
faciebat per manus Pauli by the hands of Paul:
19:12 ita ut etiam super languidos 12. So that from his body were brought
deferrentur a corpore eius sudaria vel unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons,
semicintia et recedebant ab eis and the diseases departed from them,
languores et spiritus nequam and the evil spirits went out of them.
egrediebantur
19:13 temptaverunt autem quidam et de 13. Then certain of the vagabond Jews,
circumeuntibus iudaeis exorcistis exorcists, took upon them to call over
invocare super eos qui habebant them which had evil spirits the name of
spiritus malos nomen Domini Iesu the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you
dicentes adiuro vos per Iesum quem by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
Paulus praedicat
19:14 erant autem quidam Scevae Iudaei 14. And there were seven sons of one
principis sacerdotum septem filii qui Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests,
hoc faciebant which did so.
19:15 respondens autem spiritus nequam 15. And the evil spirit answered and
dixit eis Iesum novi et Paulum scio vos said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know;
autem qui estis but who are ye?
19:16 et insiliens homo in eos in quo 16. And the man in whom the evil
erat daemonium pessimum et dominatus spirit was leaped on them, and overcame
amborum invaluit contra eos ita ut nudi them, and prevailed against them, so
et vulnerati effugerent de domo illa that they fled out of that house naked
and wounded.
19:17 hoc autem notum factum est 17. And this was known to all the Jews
omnibus Iudaeis atque gentilibus qui and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus;
habitabant Ephesi et cecidit timor and fear fell on them all, and the name
super omnes illos et magnificabatur of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
nomen Domini Iesu
19:18 multique credentium veniebant 18. And many that believed came, and
confitentes et adnuntiantes actus suos confessed, and shewed their deeds.
19:19 multi autem ex his qui fuerant 19. Many of them also which used
curiosa sectati contulerunt libros et curious arts brought their books
conbuserunt coram omnibus et conputatis together, and burned them before all
pretiis illorum invenerunt pecuniam men: and they counted the price of
denariorum quinquaginta milium them, and found it fifty thousand
pieces of silver.
19:20 ita fortiter verbum Dei 20. So mightily grew the word of God
crescebat et confirmabatur and prevailed.
19:21 his autem expletis posuit Paulus 21. After these things were ended,
in Spiritu transita Macedonia et Achaia Paul purposed in the spirit, when he
ire Hierosolymam dicens quoniam had passed through Macedonia and
postquam fuero ibi oportet me et Romam Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying,
videre After I have been there, I must also
see Rome.
19:22 mittens autem in Macedoniam duos 22. So he sent into Macedonia two of
ex ministrantibus sibi Timotheum et them that ministered unto him,
Erastum ipse remansit ad tempus in Asia Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself
stayed in Asia for a season.
19:23 facta est autem in illo tempore 23. And the same time there arose no
turbatio non minima de via small stir about that way.
19:24 Demetrius enim quidam nomine 24. For a certain man named Demetrius,
argentarius faciens aedes argenteas a silversmith, which made silver
Dianae praestabat artificibus non shrines for Diana, brought no small
modicum quaestum gain unto the craftsmen;
19:25 quos convocans et eos qui 25. Whom he called together with the
eiusmodi erant opifices dixit viri workmen of like occupation, and said,
scitis quia de hoc artificio adquisitio Sirs, ye know that by this craft we
est nobis have our wealth.
19:26 et videtis et auditis quia non 26. Moreover ye see and hear, that not
solum Ephesi sed paene totius Asiae alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout
Paulus hic suadens avertit multam all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and
turbam dicens quoniam non sunt dii qui turned away much people, saying that
manibus fiunt they be no gods, which are made with
hands:
19:27 non solum autem haec 27. So that not only this our craft is
periclitabitur nobis pars in in danger to be set at nought; but also
redargutionem venire sed et magnae deae that the temple of the great goddess
Dianae templum in nihilum reputabitur Diana should be despised, and her
sed et destrui incipiet maiestas eius magnificence should be destroyed, whom
quam tota Asia et orbis colit all Asia and the world worshippeth.
19:28 his auditis repleti sunt ira et 28. And when they heard these sayings,
exclamaverunt dicentes magna Diana they were full of wrath, and cried out,
Ephesiorum saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
19:29 et impleta est civitas 29. And the whole city was filled with
confusione et impetum fecerunt uno confusion: and having caught Gaius and
animo in theatrum rapto Gaio et Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's
Aristarcho Macedonibus comitibus Pauli companions in travel, they rushed with
one accord into the theatre.
19:30 Paulo autem volente intrare in 30. And when Paul would have entered
populum non permiserunt discipuli in unto the people, the disciples
suffered him not.
19:31 quidam autem et de Asiae 31. And certain of the chief of Asia,
principibus qui erant amici eius which were his friends, sent unto him,
miserunt ad eum rogantes ne se daret in desiring him that he would not
theatrum adventure himself into the theatre.
19:32 alii autem aliud clamabant erat 32. Some therefore cried one thing,
enim ecclesia confusa et plures and some another: for the assembly was
nesciebant qua ex causa convenissent confused: and the more part knew not
wherefore they were come together.
19:33 de turba autem detraxerunt 33. And they drew Alexander out of the
Alexandrum propellentibus eum Iudaeis multitude, the Jews putting him
Alexander ergo manu silentio postulato forward. And Alexander beckoned with
volebat rationem reddere populo the hand, and would have made his
defence unto the people.
19:34 quem ut cognoverunt Iudaeum esse 34. But when they knew that he was a
vox facta est una omnium quasi per Jew, all with one voice about the space
horas duas clamantium magna Diana of two hours cried out, Great is Diana
Ephesiorum of the Ephesians.
19:35 et cum sedasset scriba turbas 35. And when the townclerk had
dixit viri ephesii quis enim est appeased the people, he said, Ye men of
hominum qui nesciat Ephesiorum Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth
civitatem cultricem esse magnae Dianae not how that the city of the Ephesians
Iovisque prolis is a worshipper of the great goddess
Diana, and of the image which fell down
from Jupiter?
19:36 cum ergo his contradici non 36. Seeing then that these things
possit oportet vos sedatos esse et cannot be spoken against, ye ought to
nihil temere agere be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
19:37 adduxistis enim homines istos 37. For ye have brought hither these
neque sacrilegos neque blasphemantes men, which are neither robbers of
deam vestram churches, nor yet blasphemers of your
goddess.
19:38 quod si Demetrius et qui cum eo 38. Wherefore if Demetrius, and the
sunt artifices habent adversus aliquem craftsmen which are with him, have a
causam conventus forenses aguntur et matter against any man, the law is
pro consulibus sunt accusent invicem open, and there are deputies: let them
implead one another.
19:39 si quid autem alterius rei 39. But if ye enquire any thing
quaeritis in legitima ecclesia poterit concerning other matters, it shall be
absolvi determined in a lawful assembly.
19:40 nam et periclitamur argui 40. For we are in danger to be called
seditionis hodiernae cum nullus in question for this day's uproar,
obnoxius sit de quo non possimus there being no cause whereby we may
reddere rationem concursus istius give an account of this concourse.
19:40 (continues) et cum haec 41. And when he had thus spoken, he
dixisset dimisit ecclesiam. dismissed the assembly.
