12:1 eodem autem tempore misit Herodes 1. Now about that time Herod the king
rex manus ut adfligeret quosdam de stretched forth his hands to vex
ecclesia certain of the church.

12:2 occidit autem Iacobum fratrem 2. And he killed James the brother of
Iohannis gladio John with the sword.

12:3 videns autem quia placeret 3. And because he saw it pleased the

erant autem dies azymorum Peter also. (Then were the days of
                                             unleavened bread.)

12:4 quem cum adprehendisset misit in 4. And when he had apprehended him, he
carcerem tradens quattuor put him in prison, and delivered him to
quaternionibus militum custodire eum four quaternions of soldiers to keep
volens post pascha producere eum populo him; intending after Easter to bring
                                             him forth to the people.

12:5 et Petrus quidem servabatur in 5. Peter therefore was kept in prison:
carcere oratio autem fiebat sine but prayer was made without ceasing of
intermissione ab ecclesia ad Deum pro eo the church unto God for him.

12:6 cum autem producturus eum esset 6. And when Herod would have brought
Herodes in ipsa nocte erat Petrus him forth, the same night Peter was
dormiens inter duos milites vinctus sleeping between two soldiers, bound
catenis duabus et custodes ante ostium with two chains: and the keepers before
custodiebant carcerem the door kept the prison.

12:7 et ecce angelus Domini adstitit 7. And, behold, the angel of the Lord
et lumen refulsit in habitaculo came upon him, and a light shined in
percussoque latere Petri suscitavit eum the prison: and he smote Peter on the
dicens surge velociter et ceciderunt side, and raised him up, saying, Arise
catenae de manibus eius up quickly. And his chains fell off
                                             from his hands.

12:8 dixit autem angelus ad eum 8. And the angel said unto him, Gird
praecingere et calcia te gallicas tuas thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And
et fecit sic et dixit illi circumda so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast
tibi vestimentum tuum et sequere me thy garment about thee, and follow me.

12:9  et exiens sequebatur et nesciebat      9.  And he went out, and followed him;
quia verum est quod fiebat per angelum and wist not that it was true which was

12:10 transeuntes autem primam et 10. When they were past the first and
secundam custodiam venerunt ad portam the second ward, they came unto the
ferream quae ducit ad civitatem quae         iron gate that leadeth unto the city;
ultro aperta est eis et exeuntes which opened to them of his own accord:
processerunt vicum unum et continuo and they went out, and passed on
discessit angelus ab eo through one street; and forthwith the
                                             angel departed from him.

12:11 et Petrus ad se reversus dixit 11. And when Peter was come to

Iudaeorum hand of Herod, and from all the
expectation of the people of the Jews.

12:12 consideransque venit ad domum 12. And when he had considered the
Mariae matris Iohannis qui cognominatus thing, he came to the house of Mary the

et orantes where many were gathered together
                                             praying.

12:13 pulsante autem eo ostium ianuae 13. And as Peter knocked at the door
processit puella ad audiendum nomine of the gate, a damsel came to hearken,
Rhode named Rhoda.

12:14 et ut cognovit vocem Petri prae 14. And when she knew Peter's voice,
gaudio non aperuit ianuam sed intro she opened not the gate for gladness,
currens nuntiavit stare Petrum ante but ran in, and told how Peter stood
ianuam before the gate.

12:15 at illi dixerunt ad eam insanis 15. And they said unto her, Thou art

illi autem dicebant angelus eius est it was even so. Then said they, It is
                                             his angel.

12:16 Petrus autem perseverabat 16. But Peter continued knocking: and
pulsans cum autem aperuissent viderunt when they had opened the door, and saw
eum et obstipuerunt him, they were astonished.

12:17 annuens autem eis manu ut 17. But he, beckoning unto them with
tacerent enarravit quomodo Dominus the hand to hold their peace, declared
eduxisset eum de carcere dixitque unto them how the Lord had brought him
nuntiate Iacobo et fratribus haec et out of the prison. And he said, Go shew
egressus abiit in alium locum these things unto James, and to the
brethren. And he departed, and went
                                             into another place.

12:18 facta autem die erat non parva 18. Now as soon as it was day, there
turbatio inter milites quidnam de Petro was no small stir among the soldiers,
factum esset what was become of Peter.

12:19 Herodes autem cum requisisset 19. And when Herod had sought for him,

12:20 erat autem iratus Tyriis et 20. And Herod was highly displeased
Sidoniis at illi unianimes venerunt ad with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they
eum et persuaso Blasto qui erat super came with one accord to him, and,
cubiculum regis postulabant pacem eo having made Blastus the king's
quod alerentur regiones eorum ab illo chamberlain their friend, desired
                                             peace; because their country was
                                             nourished by the king's country.

12:21 statuto autem die Herodes 21. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed
vestitus veste regia sedit pro in royal apparel, sat upon his throne,
tribunali et contionabatur ad eos and made an oration unto them.

12:22 populus autem adclamabat dei 22. And the people gave a shout,
voces et non hominis saying, It is the voice of a god, and
                                             not of a man.

12:23 confestim autem percussit eum 23. And immediately the angel of the
angelus Domini eo quod non dedisset Lord smote him, because he gave not God
honorem Deo et consumptus a vermibus the glory: and he was eaten of worms,
exspiravit and gave up the ghost.

12:24 verbum autem Domini crescebat et 24. But the word of God grew and
multiplicabatur multiplied.

12:25 Barnabas autem et Saulus reversi 25. And Barnabas and Saul returned
sunt ab Hierosolymis expleto ministerio from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled
adsumpto Iohanne qui cognominatus est their ministry, and took with them
Marcus John, whose surname was Mark.
