24:1  post quinque autem dies descendit      1.  And after five days Ananias the
princeps sacerdotum Ananias cum              high priest descended with the elders,
senioribus quibusdam et Tertullo quodam      and with a certain orator named
oratore qui adierunt praesidem adversus      Tertullus, who informed the governor
Paulum                                       against Paul.

24:2  et citato Paulo coepit accusare        2.  And when he was called forth,
Tertullus dicens cum in multa pace           Tertullus began to accuse him, saying,
agamus per te et multa corrigantur per       Seeing that by thee we enjoy great
tuam providentiam                            quietness, and that very worthy deeds
                                             are done unto this nation by thy
                                             providence,

24:3  semper et ubique suscipimus            3.  We accept it always, and in all
optime Felix cum omni gratiarum actione      places, most noble Felix, with all
                                             thankfulness.

24:4  ne diutius autem te protraham oro      4.  Notwithstanding, that I be not
breviter audias nos pro tua clementia        further tedious unto thee, I pray thee
                                             that thou wouldest hear us of thy
                                             clemency a few words.

24:5  invenimus hunc hominem pestiferum      5.  For we have found this man a
et concitantem seditiones omnibus            pestilent fellow, and a mover of
Iudaeis in universo orbe et auctorem         sedition among all the Jews throughout
seditionis sectae Nazarenorum                the world, and a ringleader of the sect
                                             of the Nazarenes:

24:6  qui etiam templum violare conatus      6.  Who also hath gone about to profane
est quem et adprehendimus                    the temple: whom we took, and would
                                             have judged according to our law.

24:7  []                                     7.  But the chief captain Lysias came
                                             upon us, and with great violence took
                                             him away out of our hands,

24:8  a quo poteris ipse iudicans de         8.  Commanding his accusers to come
omnibus istis cognoscere de quibus nos       unto thee: by examining of whom thyself
accusamus eum                                mayest take knowledge of all these
                                             things, whereof we accuse him.

24:9  adiecerunt autem et Iudaei             9.  And the Jews also assented, saying
dicentes haec ita se habere                  that these things were so.

24:10  respondit autem Paulus annuente       10.  Then Paul, after that the governor
sibi praeside dicere ex multis annis         had beckoned unto him to speak,
esse te iudicem genti huic sciens bono       answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou
animo pro me satisfaciam                     hast been of many years a judge unto
                                             this nation, I do the more cheerfully
                                             answer for myself:

24:11  potes enim cognoscere quia non        11.  Because that thou mayest
plus sunt dies mihi quam duodecim ex         understand, that there are yet but
quo ascendi adorare in Hierusalem            twelve days since I went up to
                                             Jerusalem for to worship.

24:12  et neque in templo invenerunt me      12.  And they neither found me in the
cum aliquo disputantem aut concursum         temple disputing with any man, neither
facientem turbae neque in synagogis          raising up the people, neither in the
neque in civitate                            synagogues, nor in the city:

24:13  neque probare possunt tibi de         13.  Neither can they prove the things
quibus nunc accusant me                      whereof they now accuse me.

24:14  confiteor autem hoc tibi quod         14.  But this I confess unto thee, that
secundum sectam quam dicunt heresim sic      after the way which they call heresy,
deservio patrio Deo meo credens omnibus      so worship I the God of my fathers,
quae in lege et prophetis scripta sunt       believing all things which are written
                                             in the law and in the prophets:

24:15  spem habens in Deum quam et hii       15.  And have hope toward God, which
ipsi expectant resurrectionem futuram        they themselves also allow, that there
iustorum et iniquorum                        shall be a resurrection of the dead,
                                             both of the just and unjust.

24:16  in hoc et ipse studeo sine            16.  And herein do I exercise myself,
offendiculo conscientiam habere ad Deum      to have always a conscience void to
et ad homines semper                         offence toward God, and toward men.

24:17  post annos autem plures               17.  Now after many years I came to
elemosynas facturus in gentem meam veni      bring alms to my nation, and offerings.
et oblationes et vota

24:18  in quibus invenerunt me               18.  Whereupon certain Jews from Asia
purificatum in templo non cum turba          found me purified in the temple,
neque cum tumultu                            neither with multitude, nor with tumult.

24:19  quidam autem ex Asia Iudaei quos      19.  Who ought to have been here before
oportebat apud te praesto esse et            thee, and object, if they had ought
accusare si quid haberent adversum me        against me.

24:20  aut hii ipsi dicant si quid           20.  Or else let these same here say,
invenerunt in me iniquitatis cum stem        if they have found any evil doing in
in concilio                                  me, while I stood before the council,

24:21  nisi de una hac solummodo voce        21.  Except it be for this one voice,
qua clamavi inter eos stans quoniam de       that I cried standing among them,
resurrectione mortuorum ego iudicor          Touching the resurrection of the dead I
hodie a vobis                                am called in question by you this day.

24:22  distulit autem illos Felix            22.  And when Felix heard these things,
certissime sciens de via dicens cum          having more perfect knowledge of that

                                             Lysias the chief captain shall come
                                             down, I will know the uttermost of your
                                             matter.

24:23  iussitque centurioni custodiri        23.  And he commanded a centurion to
eum et habere requiem nec quemquam           keep Paul, and to let him have liberty,
prohibere de suis ministrare ei              and that he should forbid none of his
                                             acquaintance to minister or come unto
                                             him.

24:24  post aliquot autem dies veniens       24.  And after certain days, when Felix
Felix cum Drusilla uxore sua quae erat       came with his wife Drusilla, which was
Iudaea vocavit Paulum et audivit ab eo       a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard
fidem quae est in Iesum Christum             him concerning the faith in Christ.

24:25  disputante autem illo de              25.  And as he reasoned of
iustitia et castitate et de iudicio          righteousness, temperance, and judgment
futuro timefactus Felix respondit quod       to come, Felix trembled, and answered,
nunc adtinet vade tempore autem              Go thy way for this time; when I have a
oportuno accersiam te                        convenient season, I will call for thee.

24:26  simul et sperans quia pecunia         26.  He hoped also that money should
daretur a Paulo propter quod et              have been given him of Paul, that he
frequenter accersiens eum loquebatur         might loose him: wherefore he sent for
cum eo                                       him the oftener, and communed with him.

24:27  biennio autem expleto accepit         27.  But after two years Porcius Festus
successorem Felix Porcium Festum volens      came into Felix' room: and Felix,
autem gratiam praestare Iudaeis Felix        willing to shew the Jews a pleasure,
reliquit Paulum vinctum                      left Paul bound.
