26:1  Agrippa vero ad Paulum ait             1.  Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou
permittitur tibi loqui pro temet ipso        art permitted to speak for thyself.
tunc Paulus extenta manu coepit              Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and
rationem reddere                             answered for himself:

26:2  de omnibus quibus accusor a            2.  I think myself happy, king Agrippa,
Iudaeis rex Agrippa aestimo me beatum        because I shall answer for myself this
apud te cum sim defensurus me hodie          day before thee touching all the things
                                             whereof I am accused of the Jews:

26:3  maxime te sciente omnia quae apud      3.  Especially because I know thee to
Iudaeos sunt consuetudines et                be expert in all customs and questions
quaestiones propter quod obsecro             which are among the Jews: wherefore I
patienter me audias                          beseech thee to hear me patiently.

26:4  et quidem vitam meam a iuventute       4.  My manner of life from my youth,
quae ab initio fuit in gente mea in          which was at the first among mine own
Hierosolymis noverunt omnes Iudaei           nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

26:5  praescientes me ab initio si           5.  Which knew me from the beginning,
velint testimonium perhibere quoniam         if they would testify, that after the
secundum certissimam sectam nostrae          most straitest sect of our religion I
religionis vixi Pharisaeus                   lived a Pharisee.

26:6  et nunc in spe quae ad patres          6.  And now I stand and am judged for
nostros repromissionis facta est a Deo       the hope of the promise made of God,
sto iudicio subiectus                        unto our fathers:

26:7  in quam duodecim tribus nostrae        7.  Unto which promise our twelve
nocte ac die deservientes sperant            tribes, instantly serving God day and
devenire de qua spe accusor a Iudaeis        night, hope to come. For which hope's
rex                                          sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the
                                             Jews.

26:8  quid incredibile iudicatur apud        8.  Why should it be thought a thing
vos si Deus mortuos suscitat                 incredible with you, that God should
                                             raise the dead?

26:9  et ego quidem existimaveram me         9.  I verily thought with myself, that
adversus nomen Iesu Nazareni debere          I ought to do many things contrary to
multa contraria agere                        the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

26:10  quod et feci Hierosolymis et          10.  Which thing I also did in
multos sanctorum ego in carceribus           Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I
inclusi a principibus sacerdotum             shut up in prison, having received
potestate accepta et cum occiderentur        authority from the chief priests; and
detuli sententiam                            when they were put to death, I gave my
                                             voice against them.

26:11  et per omnes synagogas                11.  And I punished them oft in every
frequenter puniens eos conpellebam           synagogue, and compelled them to
blasphemare et amplius insaniens in eos      blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad
persequebar usque in exteras civitates       against them, I persecuted them even
                                             unto strange cities.

26:12  in quibus dum irem Damascum cum       12.  Whereupon as I went to Damascus
potestate et permissu principum              with authority and commission from the
sacerdotum                                   chief priests,

26:13  die media in via vidi rex de          13.  At midday, O king, I saw in the
caelo supra splendorem solis                 way a light from heaven, above the
circumfulsisse me lumen et eos qui           brightness of the sun, shining round
mecum simul erant                            about me and them which journeyed with
                                             me.

26:14  omnesque nos cum decidissemus in      14.  And when we were all fallen to the
terram audivi vocem loquentem mihi           earth, I heard a voice speaking unto
hebraica lingua Saule Saule quid me          me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue,
persequeris durum est tibi contra            Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it
stimulum calcitrare                          is hard for thee to kick against the
                                             pricks.

26:15  ego autem dixi quis es Domine         15.  And I said, Who art thou, Lord?
Dominus autem dixit ego sum Iesus quem       And he said, I am Jesus whom thou
tu persequeris                               persecutest.

26:16  sed exsurge et sta super pedes        16.  But rise, and stand upon thy feet:
tuos ad hoc enim apparui tibi ut             for I have appeared unto thee for this
constituam te ministrum et testem eorum      purpose, to make thee a minister and a
quae vidisti et eorum quibus apparebo        witness both of these things which thou
tibi                                         hast seen, and of those things in the
                                             which I will appear unto thee;

26:17  eripiens te de populo et              17.  Delivering thee from the people,
gentibus in quas nunc ego mitto te           and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I
                                             send thee,

26:18  aperire oculos eorum ut               18.  To open their eyes, and to turn
convertantur a tenebris ad lucem et de       them from darkness to light, and from
potestate Satanae ad Deum ut accipiant       the power of Satan unto God, that they
remissionem peccatorum et sortem inter       may receive forgiveness of sins, and
sanctos per fidem quae est in me             inheritance among them which are
                                             sanctified by faith that is in me.

26:19  unde rex Agrippa non fui              19.  Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was
incredulus caelestis visionis                not disobedient unto the heavenly
                                             vision:

26:20  sed his qui sunt Damasci primum       20.  But shewed first unto them of
et Hierosolymis et in omnem regionem         Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and
Iudaeae et gentibus adnuntiabam ut           throughout all the coasts of Judaea,
paenitentiam agerent et converterentur       and then to the Gentiles, that they
ad Deum digna paenitentiae opera             should repent and turn to God, and do
facientes                                    works meet for repentance.

26:21  hac ex causa me Iudaei cum essem      21.  For these causes the Jews caught
in templo conprehensum temptabant            me in the temple, and went about to
interficere                                  kill me.

26:22  auxilio autem adiutus Dei usque       22.  Having therefore obtained help of
in hodiernum diem sto testificans            God, I continue unto this day,
minori atque maiori nihil extra dicens       witnessing both to small and great,
quam ea quae prophetae sunt locuti           saying none other things than those
futura esse et Moses                         which the prophets and Moses did say
                                             should come:

26:23  si passibilis Christus si primus      23.  That Christ should suffer, and
ex resurrectione mortuorum lumen             that he should be the first that should
adnuntiaturus est populo et gentibus         rise from the dead, and should shew
                                             light unto the people, and to the
                                             Gentiles.

26:24  haec loquente eo et rationem          24.  And as he thus spake for himself,
reddente Festus magna voce dixit             Festus said with a loud voice, Paul,
insanis Paule multae te litterae ad          thou art beside thyself; much learning
insaniam convertunt                          doth make thee mad.

26:25  at Paulus non insanio inquit          25.  But he said, I am not mad, most
optime Feste sed veritatis et                noble Festus; but speak forth the words
sobrietatis verba eloquor                    of truth and soberness.

26:26  scit enim de his rex ad quem et       26.  For the king knoweth of these
constanter loquor latere enim eum nihil      things, before whom also I speak
horum arbitror neque enim in angulo          freely: for I am persuaded that none of
quicquam horum gestum est                    these things are hidden from him; for
                                             this thing was not done in a corner.

26:27  credis rex Agrippa prophetis          27.  King Agrippa, believest thou the
scio quia credis                             prophets? I know that thou believest.

26:28  Agrippa autem ad Paulum in            28.  Then Agrippa said unto Paul,
modico suades me Christianum fieri           Almost thou persuadest me to be a
                                             Christian.

26:29  et Paulus opto apud Deum et in        29.  And Paul said, I would to God,
modico et in magno non tantum te sed et      that not only thou, but also all that
omnes hos qui audiunt hodie fieri tales      hear me this day, were both almost, and
qualis et ego sum exceptis vinculis his      altogether such as I am, except these
                                             bonds.

26:30  et exsurrexit rex et praeses et       30.  And when he had thus spoken, the
Bernice et qui adsidebant eis                king rose up, and the governor, and
                                             Bernice, and they that sat with them:

26:31  et cum secessissent loquebantur       31.  And when they were gone aside,
ad invicem dicentes quia nihil morte         they talked between themselves, saying,
aut vinculorum dignum quid facit homo        This man doeth nothing worthy of death
iste                                         or of bonds.

26:32  Agrippa autem Festo dixit             32.  Then said Agrippa unto Festus,
dimitti poterat homo hic si non              This man might have been set at
appellasset Caesarem                         liberty, if he had not appealed unto
                                             Caesar.
