4:1 loquentibus autem illis ad populum 1. And as they spake unto the people,
supervenerunt sacerdotes et magistratus the priests, and the captain of the
templi et Sadducaei temple, and the Sadducees, came upon
                                             them,

4:2 dolentes quod docerent populum et 2. Being grieved that they taught the
adnuntiarent in Iesu resurrectionem ex people, and preached through Jesus the
mortuis resurrection from the dead.

4:3 et iniecerunt in eis manus et 3. And they laid hands on them, and
posuerunt eos in custodiam in crastinum put them in hold unto the next day: for
erat enim iam vespera it was now eventide.

4:4 multi autem eorum qui audierant 4. Howbeit many of them which heard
verbum crediderunt et factus est the word believed; and the number of
numerus virorum quinque milia the men was about five thousand.

4:5 factum est autem in crastinum ut 5. And it came to pass on the morrow,
congregarentur principes eorum et that their rulers, and elders, and
seniores et scribae in Hierusalem scribes,

4:6 et Annas princeps sacerdotum et 6. And Annas the high priest, and
Caiphas et Iohannes et Alexander et Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and
quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali as many as were of the kindred of the
high priest, were gathered together at
                                             Jerusalem.

4:7 et statuentes eos in medio 7. And when they had set them in the
interrogabant in qua virtute aut in quo midst, they asked, By what power, or by
nomine fecistis hoc vos what name, have ye done this?

4:8 tunc Petrus repletus Spiritu 8. Then Peter, filled with the Holy
Sancto dixit ad eos principes populi et Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the
seniores people, and elders of Israel,

4:9 si nos hodie diiudicamur in 9. If we this day be examined of the
benefacto hominis infirmi in quo iste good deed done to the impotent man, by
salvus factus est                            what means he is made whole;

4:10 notum sit omnibus vobis et omni 10. Be it known unto you all, and to
plebi Israhel quia in nomine Iesu all the people of Israel, that by the
Christi Nazareni quem vos crucifixistis name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom
quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis in hoc ye crucified, whom God raised from the
iste adstat coram vobis sanus dead, even by him doth this man stand
                                             here before you whole.

4:11 hic est lapis qui reprobatus est 11. This is the stone which was set at
a vobis aedificantibus qui factus est nought of you builders, which is become
in caput anguli the head of the corner.

4:12 et non est in alio aliquo salus 12. Neither is there salvation in any
nec enim nomen aliud est sub caelo other: for there is none other name
datum hominibus in quo oportet nos under heaven given among men, whereby
salvos fieri we must be saved.

4:13 videntes autem Petri constantiam 13. Now when they saw the boldness of
et Iohannis conperto quod homines Peter and John, and perceived that they
essent sine litteris et idiotae were unlearned and ignorant men, they
admirabantur et cognoscebant eos marvelled; and they took knowledge of
quoniam cum Iesu fuerant them, that they had been with Jesus.

4:14 hominem quoque videntes stantem 14. And beholding the man which was
cum eis qui curatus fuerat nihil healed standing with them, they could
poterant contradicere say nothing against it.

4:15 iusserunt autem eos foras extra 15. But when they had commanded them
concilium secedere et conferebant ad to go aside out of the council, they
invicem conferred among themselves,

4:16 dicentes quid faciemus hominibus 16. Saying, What shall we do to these
istis quoniam quidem notum signum men? for that indeed a notable miracle
factum est per eos omnibus habitantibus hath been done by them is manifest to
in Hierusalem manifestum et non all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and
possumus negare we cannot deny it.

4:17 sed ne amplius divulgetur in 17. But that it spread no further
populum comminemur eis ne ultra among the people, let us straitly
loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum threaten them, that they speak
henceforth to no man in this name.

4:18 et vocantes eos denuntiaverunt ne 18. And they called them, and
omnino loquerentur neque docerent in commanded them not to speak at all nor
nomine Iesu teach in the name of Jesus.

4:19 Petrus vero et Iohannes 19. But Peter and John answered and
respondentes dixerunt ad eos si iustum said unto them, Whether it be right in
est in conspectu Dei vos potius audire the sight of God to hearken unto you
quam Deum iudicate more than unto God, judge ye.

4:20 non enim possumus quae vidimus et 20. For we cannot but speak the things
audivimus non loqui which we have seen and heard.

4:21 at illi comminantes dimiserunt 21. So when they had further
eos non invenientes quomodo punirent threatened them, they let them go,
eos propter populum quia omnes finding nothing how they might punish
clarificabant Deum in eo quod acciderat them, because of the people: for all
men glorified God for that which was
                                             done.

4:22 annorum enim erat amplius 22. For the man was above forty years
quadraginta homo in quo factum erat old, on whom this miracle of healing
signum istud sanitatis was shewed.

4:23 dimissi autem venerunt ad suos et 23. And being let go, they went to
adnuntiaverunt eis quanta ad eos their own company, and reported all
principes sacerdotum et seniores that the chief priests and elders had
dixissent said unto them.

4:24 qui cum audissent unianimiter 24. And when they heard that, they
levaverunt vocem ad Deum et dixerunt lifted up their voice to God with one
Domine tu qui fecisti caelum et terram accord, and said, Lord, thou art God,
et mare et omnia quae in eis sunt which hast made heaven, and earth, and
the sea, and all that in them is:

4:25 qui Spiritu Sancto per os patris 25. Who by the mouth of thy servant
nostri David pueri tui dixisti quare David hast said, Why did the heathen
fremuerunt gentes et populi meditati rage, and the people imagine vain
sunt inania things?

4:26 adstiterunt reges terrae et 26. The kings of the earth stood up,
principes convenerunt in unum adversus and the rulers were gathered together
Dominum et adversus Christum eius against the Lord, and against his
                                             Christ.

4:27 convenerunt enim vere in civitate 27. For of a truth against thy holy
ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Iesum child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed,
quem unxisti Herodes et Pontius Pilatus both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with
cum gentibus et populis Israhel the Gentiles, and the people of Israel,
                                             were gathered together,

4:28 facere quae manus tua et 28. For to do whatsoever thy hand and
consilium decreverunt fieri thy counsel determined before to be
                                             done.

4:29 et nunc Domine respice in minas 29. And now, Lord, behold their
eorum et da servis tuis cum omni threatenings: and grant unto thy
fiducia loqui verbum tuum servants, that with all boldness they
                                             may speak thy word,

4:30 in eo cum manum tuam extendas 30. By stretching forth thine hand to
sanitates et signa et prodigia fieri heal; and that signs and wonders may be
per nomen sancti Filii tui Iesu done by the name of thy holy child
                                             Jesus.

4:31 et cum orassent motus est locus 31. And when they had prayed, the
in quo erant congregati et repleti sunt place was shaken where they were
omnes Spiritu Sancto et loquebantur assembled together; and they were all
verbum Dei cum fiducia filled with the Holy Ghost, and they
spake the word of God with boldness.

4:32 multitudinis autem credentium 32. And the multitude of them that
erat cor et anima una nec quisquam believed were of one heart and of one
eorum quae possidebant aliquid suum soul: neither said any of them that
esse dicebat sed erant illis omnia ought of the things which he possessed
communia was his own; but they had all things
                                             common.

4:33 et virtute magna reddebant 33. And with great power gave the
apostoli testimonium resurrectionis apostles witness of the resurrection of
Iesu Christi Domini et gratia magna the Lord Jesus: and great grace was
erat in omnibus illis upon them all.

4:34 neque enim quisquam egens erat 34. Neither was there any among them
inter illos quotquot enim possessores that lacked: for as many as were
agrorum aut domorum erant vendentes possessors of lands or houses sold
adferebant pretia eorum quae vendebant them, and brought the prices of the
                                             things that were sold,

4:35 et ponebant ante pedes 35. And laid them down at the
apostolorum dividebantur autem singulis apostles' feet: and distribution was
prout cuique opus erat made unto every man according as he had
                                             need.

4:36 Ioseph autem qui cognominatus est 36. And Joses, who by the apostles was
Barnabas ab apostolis quod est surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being
interpretatum Filius consolationis interpreted, The son of consolation,) a
Levites Cyprius genere Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

4:37 cum haberet agrum vendidit illum 37. Having land, sold it, and brought
et adtulit pretium et posuit ante pedes the money, and laid it at the apostles'
apostolorum feet.
