17:1  cum autem perambulassent               1.  Now when they had passed through
Amphipolim et Apolloniam venerunt            Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to
Thessalonicam ubi erat synagoga              Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of
Iudaeorum                                    the Jews:

17:2  secundum consuetudinem autem           2.  And Paul, as his manner was, went
Paulus introivit ad eos et per sabbata       in unto them, and three sabbath days
tria disserebat eis de scripturis            reasoned with them out of the
                                             scriptures,

17:3  adaperiens et insinuans quia           3.  Opening and alleging, that Christ
Christum oportuit pati et resurgere a        must needs have suffered, and risen
mortuis et quia hic est Christus Iesus       again from the dead; and that this
quem ego adnuntio vobis                      Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is
                                             Christ.

17:4  et quidam ex eis crediderunt et        4.  And some of them believed, and
adiuncti sunt Paulo et Silae et de           consorted with Paul and Silas; and of
colentibus gentilibusque multitudo           the devout Greeks a great multitude,
magna et mulieres nobiles non paucae         and of the chief women not a few.

17:5  zelantes autem Iudaei                  5.  But the Jews which believed not,
adsumentesque de vulgo viros quosdam         moved with envy, took unto them certain
malos et turba facta concitaverunt           lewd fellows of the baser sort, and
civitatem et adsistentes domui Iasonis       gathered a company, and set all the
quaerebant eos producere in populum          city on an uproar, and assaulted the
                                             house of Jason, and sought to bring
                                             them out to the people.

17:6  et cum non invenissent eos             6.  And when they found them not, they
trahebant Iasonem et quosdam fratres ad      drew Jason and certain brethren unto
principes civitatis clamantes quoniam        the rulers of the city, crying, These
hii qui orbem concitant et huc venerunt      that have turned the world upside down
                                             are come hither also;

17:7  quos suscepit Iason et hii omnes       7.  Whom Jason hath received: and these
contra decreta Caesaris faciunt regem        all do contrary to the decrees of
alium dicentes esse Iesum                    Caesar, saying that there is another
                                             king, one Jesus.

17:8  concitaverunt autem plebem et          8.  And they troubled the people and
principes civitatis audientes haec           the rulers of the city, when they heard
                                             these things.

17:9  et accepto satis ab Iasone et a        9.  And when they had taken security of
ceteris dimiserunt eos                       Jason, and of the other, they let them
                                             go.

17:10  fratres vero confestim per            10.  And the brethren immediately sent
noctem dimiserunt Paulum et Silam in         away Paul and Silas by night unto
Beroeam qui cum advenissent in               Berea: who coming thither went into the
synagogam Iudaeorum introierunt              synagogue of the Jews.

17:11  hii autem erant nobiliores eorum      11.  These were more noble than those
qui sunt Thessalonicae qui susceperunt       in Thessalonica, in that they received
verbum cum omni aviditate cotidie            the word with all readiness of mind,
scrutantes scripturas si haec ita se         and searched the scriptures daily,
haberent                                     whether those things were so.

17:12  et multi quidem crediderunt ex        12.  Therefore many of them believed;
eis et gentilium mulierum honestarum et      also of honourable women which were
viri non pauci                               Greeks, and of men, not a few.

17:13  cum autem cognovissent in             13.  But when the Jews of Thessalonica
Thessalonica Iudaei quia et Beroeae          had knowledge that the word of God was
praedicatum est a Paulo verbum Dei           preached of Paul at Berea, they came
venerunt et illuc commoventes et             thither also, and stirred up the people.
turbantes multitudinem

17:14  statimque tunc Paulum dimiserunt      14.  And then immediately the brethren
fratres ut iret usque ad mare Silas          sent away Paul to go as it were to the
autem et Timotheus remanserunt ibi           sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode
                                             there still.

17:15  qui autem deducebant Paulum           15.  And they that conducted Paul
perduxerunt usque Athenas et accepto         brought him unto Athens: and receiving
mandato ab eo ad Silam et Timotheum ut       a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus
quam celeriter venirent ad illum             for to come to him with all speed, they
profecti sunt                                departed.

17:16  Paulus autem cum Athenis eos          16.  Now while Paul waited for them at
expectaret incitabatur spiritus eius in      Athens, his spirit was stirred in him,
ipso videns idolatriae deditam civitatem     when he saw the city wholly given to
                                             idolatry.

17:17  disputabat igitur in synagoga         17.  Therefore disputed he in the
cum Iudaeis et colentibus et in foro         synagogue with the Jews, and with the
per omnes dies ad eos qui aderant            devout persons, and in the market daily
                                             with them that met with him.

17:18  quidam autem epicurei et stoici       18.  Then certain philosophers of the
philosophi disserebant cum eo et quidam      Epicureans, and of the Stoicks,
dicebant quid vult seminiverbius hic         encountered him. And some said, What
dicere alii vero novorum daemoniorum         will this babbler say? other some, He
videtur adnuntiator esse quia Iesum et       seemeth to be a setter forth of strange
resurrectionem adnuntiabat eis               gods: because he preached unto them
                                             Jesus, and the resurrection.

17:19  et adprehensum eum ad Ariopagum       19.  And they took him, and brought him
duxerunt dicentes possumus scire quae        unto Areopagus, saying, May we know
est haec nova quae a te dicitur doctrina     what this new doctrine, whereof thou
                                             speakest, is?

17:20  nova enim quaedam infers auribus      20.  For thou bringest certain strange
nostris volumus ergo scire quidnam           things to our ears: we would know
velint haec esse                             therefore what these things mean.

17:21  Athenienses autem omnes et            21.  (For all the Athenians and
advenae hospites ad nihil aliud              strangers which were there spent their
vacabant nisi aut dicere aut audire          time in nothing else, but either to
aliquid novi                                 tell, or to hear some new thing.)

17:22  stans autem Paulus in medio           22.  Then Paul stood in the midst of
Ariopagi ait viri athenienses per omnia      Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens,
quasi superstitiosiores vos video            I perceive that in all things ye are
                                             too superstitious.

17:23  praeteriens enim et videns            23.  For as I passed by, and beheld
simulacra vestra inveni et aram in qua       your devotions, I found an altar with
scriptum erat ignoto deo quod ergo           this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
ignorantes colitis hoc ego adnuntio          Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship,
vobis                                        him declare I unto you.

17:24  Deus qui fecit mundum et omnia        24.  God that made the world and all
quae in eo sunt hic caeli et terrae cum      things therein, seeing that he is Lord
sit Dominus non in manufactis templis        of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in
inhabitat                                    temples made with hands;

17:25  nec manibus humanis colitur           25.  Neither is worshipped with men's
indigens aliquo cum ipse det omnibus         hands, as though he needed any thing,
vitam et inspirationem et omnia              seeing he giveth to all life, and
                                             breath, and all things;

17:26  fecitque ex uno omne genus            26.  And hath made of one blood all
hominum inhabitare super universam           nations of men for to dwell on all the
faciem terrae definiens statuta tempora      face of the earth, and hath determined
et terminos habitationis eorum               the times before appointed, and the
                                             bounds of their habitation;

17:27  quaerere Deum si forte                27.  That they should seek the Lord, if
adtractent eum aut inveniant quamvis         haply they might feel after him, and
non longe sit ab unoquoque nostrum           find him, though he be not far from
                                             every one of us:

17:28  in ipso enim vivimus et movemur       28.  For in him we live, and move, and
et sumus sicut et quidam vestrum             have our being; as certain also of your
poetarum dixerunt ipsius enim et genus       own poets have said, For we are also
sumus                                        his offspring.

17:29  genus ergo cum simus Dei non          29.  Forasmuch then as we are the
debemus aestimare auro aut argento aut       offspring of God, we ought not to think
lapidi sculpturae artis et cogitationis      that the Godhead is like unto gold, or
hominis divinum esse simile                  silver, or stone, graven by art and
                                             man's device.

17:30  et tempora quidem huius               30.  And the times of this ignorance
ignorantiae despiciens Deus nunc             God winked at; but now commandeth all
adnuntiat hominibus ut omnes ubique          men every where to repent:
paenitentiam agant

17:31  eo quod statuit diem in qua           31.  Because he hath appointed a day,
iudicaturus est orbem in aequitate in        in the which he will judge the world in
viro in quo statuit fidem praebens           righteousness by that man whom he hath
omnibus suscitans eum a mortuis              ordained; whereof he hath given
                                             assurance unto all men, in that he hath
                                             raised him from the dead.

17:32  cum audissent autem                   32.  And when they heard of the
resurrectionem mortuorum quidam quidem       resurrection of the dead, some mocked:
inridebant quidam vero dixerunt              and others said, We will hear thee
audiemus te de hoc iterum                    again of this matter.

17:33  sic Paulus exivit de medio eorum      33.  So Paul departed from among them.

17:34  quidam vero viri adherentes ei        34.  Howbeit certain men clave unto
crediderunt in quibus et Dionisius           him, and believed: among the which was
Ariopagita et mulier nomine Damaris et       Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman
alii cum eis                                 named Damaris, and others with them.
