Klage über Gottes Verhalten in der
schweren Heimsuchung

1.  Es ekelt mich vor meinem Leben. Ich      1.  "I loathe my life; I will give free
will meinen Kummer von mir lassen, will      utterance to my complaint; I will speak
reden in der Bitterkeit meiner Seele.        in the bitterness of my soul.

2.  Ich sage zu Gott: Verdamme mich          2.  I will say to God, Do not condemn
nicht! Laß mich wissen, warum du mich        me; let me know why thou dost contend
vor Gericht ziehst!                          against me.

3.  Ist das gut für dich, daß du             3.  Does it seem good to thee to
Unterdrückung übst, daß du die Arbeit        oppress, to despise the work of thy
deiner Hände verwirfst und [dein Licht]      hands and favor the designs of the
über dem Rat der Gottlosen leuchten          wicked?
läßt?

4.  Hast du Menschenaugen, oder siehst       4.  Hast thou eyes of flesh? Dost thou
du, wie ein Mensch sieht?                    see as man sees?

5.  Sind deine Tage wie die Tage eines       5.  Are thy days as the days of man, or
Menschen oder deine Jahre wie die Tage       thy years as man's years,

6.  daß du nach meiner Schuld suchst         6.  that thou dost seek out my iniquity
und nach meiner Sünde forschst,              and search for my sin,

7.  obwohl du weißt, daß ich nicht           7.  although thou knowest that I am not
schuldig bin, und niemand da ist, der        guilty, and there is none to deliver
aus deiner Hand retten kann?                 out of thy hand?

8.  Deine Hände haben mich ganz              8.  Thy hands fashioned and made me;
gebildet und gestaltet um und um, und        and now thou dost turn about and
[nun] verschlingst du mich!                  destroy me.

9.  Bedenke doch, daß du mich wie Ton        9.  Remember that thou hast made me of
gestaltet hast! Und [jetzt] willst du        clay; and wilt thou turn me to dust
mich zum Staub zurückkehren lassen!          again?

10.  Hast du mich nicht hingegossen wie      10.  Didst thou not pour me out like
Milch und wie Käse mich gerinnen lassen?     milk and curdle me like cheese?

11.  Mit Haut und Fleisch hast du mich       11.  Thou didst clothe me with skin and
bekleidet und mit Knochen und Sehnen         flesh, and knit me together with bones
mich durchflochten.                          and sinews.

12.  Leben und Gnade hast du mir             12.  Thou hast granted me life and
gewährt, und deine Obhut bewahrte            steadfast love; and thy care has

13.  Doch dies verbargst du in deinem        13.  Yet these things thou didst hide
Herzen, ich habe erkannt, daß du dies        in thy heart; I know that this was thy

14.  Wenn ich sündigte, so würdest du        14.  If I sin, thou dost mark me, and

mit Schande und getränkt mit Elend.          upon my affliction.

16.  Und richtete es sich auf, wie ein       16.  And if I lift myself up, thou dost
Löwe würdest du mich jagen und dich          hunt me like a lion, and again work
wieder als wunderbar an mir erweisen.        wonders against me;

17.  Du würdest neue Zeugen gegen mich       17.  thou dost renew thy witnesses
aufstellen und deinen Zorn über mich         against me, and increase thy vexation
vergrößern. Ein ständig sich ablösendes      toward me; thou dost bring fresh hosts
Heer [kämpft] gegen mich.                    against me.

18.  Warum hast du mich aus dem              18.  "Why didst thou bring me forth
Mutterleib hervorgezogen? Wäre ich doch      from the womb? Would that I had died
umgekommen, so hätte mich kein Auge          before any eye had seen me,
gesehen!

19.  Als wenn ich nie gewesen, so wäre       19.  and were as though I had not been,
ich [dann]; vom Mutterschoß wäre ich zu      carried from the womb to the grave.
Grabe geleitet worden!

20.  Sind meine Tage nicht [nur noch]        20.  Are not the days of my life few?
wenige? Er lasse [doch] ab, wende sich       Let me alone, that I may find a little
von mir, daß ich ein wenig fröhlich          comfort
werde,

21.  ehe ich hingehe - und nicht             21.  before I go whence I shall not
wiederkomme - in das Land der                return, to the land of gloom and deep
Finsternis und des Todesschattens,           darkness,

22.  in das Land, schwarz wie die            22.  the land of gloom and chaos, where
Dunkelheit, [das Land] der Finsternis -      light is as darkness."
[da ist] keine Ordnung -, und [selbst]
das Hellwerden ist [dort] wie
Dunkelheit!
